Title: Hey guys, I'm new here and I need some advice/help.

Hey guys, I have a ibook G3 I built for my daughter who is 3. She turns 4 soon and I want her to learn music as she loves it heaps. I found this site when setting up the mac for her and I think it will be quite easy and cheap to set-up a keyboard with the mac for playing around with sounds etc. Maybe even making some songs.

Now the ibook is a 12" G3 over clocked to 700mhz with the maximum 640mb of ram. It currently dual boots os 9.2.2 and osx tiger. We almost never use the tiger as all her games work on os9 perfectly and it is much faster. I have a 120gb firewire HDD for it but it does not boot from that drive for some reason. It should be easy enough to wipe the thing for a 10th time and setup a dual boot. I guess I could also put the 120gb HDD inside the mac but I would rather not, its been taken apart far too many times already.

I found this Evolution (M-Audio) MK-361 USB Keyboard (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Evolution-M-Audio-MK-361-USB-Keyboard/322956334379?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1431.l2649) keyboard today and put a bid on it after finding the list here of keyboards that work. This looks perfectly fine for our needs and its brand new in the box for less than $180.

Now I'm looking for a getting started type of thing as I have never used any of this kind of stuff before. I see in the instant DAW package that it installs a soundcard driver extension. What kind of (USB?) sound card do we need for the ibook to use instant DAW or is the inbuilt one ok? We won't be recording line in I don't think, just using the keyboard to play music and making sounds with synths and layering etc.

I have been looking around here and reading a lot but you don't seem to have any beginners information. This has been my first mac computer and I had it running on car batteries in series for ages until I could even get a power cord out of the USA. I am trying to find a G4 locally but not having much luck, something with a bigger screen would obviously be much better than the 12" iBook for this kind of work, but the G3 should be a good starting point if anyone can point me in the right direction. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like it comes with a bunch of Apps that get you/her started. You might wanna use that to lern a little bit about midi and controllers before you dive deaper into all that.
Besides i dont think we have anything that would suit a 4 year old unless your kid is a artist already. If you have a look at whats available none of these Appz come without some kind of learning curve. This is not a try to stop you or anything. BTW format that external drive in OS9 and see if that helps. I have a look at it and maybe there is something that can be done. Best of luck to you and your fam and merry christmas.

if you need midi than i would suggest Reason 2 since it comes with a pool of audio data but the learning curve is very steap from the point of view of a little kid. internal sound should be ok.

Thanks a lot mate. Will have a look. Its more to just muck around with of course while she is this young, and it will be fun for me too. I've had a great time playing around with the mac already. I had a look at some cubase youtube videos earlier, and I think I get what you mean about a steep learning curve lol. Thanks a lot for the help.

I tried to format it in OS9 already, its most likely because of the enclosure I used. Its a laptop HDD inside a cheap after market case. Its no worries. From the links you gave me I can just install those apps in the OS 9.2.2 I have already. For now the things is just full of games. Love the fact everything for OS9 was free and learning now things is great fun. Thanks again.

Well I ended up going with Abelton Live 4.14. I find it pretty simple to use but I haven't got the keyboard in the mail yet. It appears to work fine on the iBook g3 @700Mhz and max ram. Bit hard with the 12" screen as I suspected but I can live with it for now.

I found one G4 1Ghz Titanium for sale in my entire country for $100 with a non working battery but the lady refused to post it to me even if I paid her $200, and it has since been taken off the market. Some people really are incredibly lazy or have way too much money.

Thanks for your great site once again. Wish me luck in my new hobby. I've wanted to make music like this for years. It will be great to share the experience with my daughter.

Hey guys, I got my evolution MK-361, but the CDROM was missing from the box. No much for "brand new unopened".

The people I brought it off and trying to chase down an ISO for me, but until then I got the OS9 drivers off the m-audio site. I have the keyboard detected and showing in the Apple System Profiler. However when I launch ableton live 4.14 the device is not listed. I only have "computer keyboard"

Anyone got any tips? Am I doing something wrong or does this model not work with abelton? That would be a shame. Hopefully the CD can be located or they can ISO the MK-261 they have in stock for me. Not sure if this will help though. But it does include some software that was bundled with the keyboards that should work at least for now.
