My Liquid Saffire 56 can be a 8ch adat slave. But it needs to run 10.4 or 10.5 to make adjustements for the standalone (without firewire) mode.http://us.focusrite.com/firewire-audio-interfaces/liquid-saffire-56 (http://us.focusrite.com/firewire-audio-interfaces/liquid-saffire-56)

i guess that means these guys are still as valuable as they were on day 1 in the studio and are getting used

Protools5LEGuy,
(http://img.audiofanzine.com/image.php?lang=fr&identifier=id&size=normal&module=product&product_id=1685)
Hmmm… maybe this can get you more inputs as an ADAT slave for a super cheap price ! We talked about the Presonus Firestation in the past, but is suffered as interface due to bugs with it's Mlan implementation. I would like to add it here as an ADAT slave (no drivers necessary). Set it up just like an octpre. it has word clock In BNC and eight channel ADAT light pipe I/O and also some pretty good sounding Pre(s) as I remember… also adjustable gain on the line stuff !
Firestation Specs: http://www.presonus.com/products/FIREstation/features
ebay usual price (less than $125)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Presonus-Firestation-Audio-MIDI-Interface-No-Reserve-/281305275338?pt=US_Computer_Recording_Interfaces&hash=item417f19dbca&nma=true&si=xmVMozZQAhKdnCfJ6gZ7fAthEWE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Sound on Sound Complete review: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb03/articles/presonusfirestation.asp
Forgot it also has a real tube in pre-amp: The Firestation includes two preamps which are switchable between solid-state and tube driven. That's right: inside the hi-tech outer skin of this beast lurks a real 12AX7 vacuum tube, for adding "greater warmth and a richer sound
I think this counts as the best "bang for the buck" ADAT slave if it works as imaged in your setup :)

What about the 20 bit Fostex VC-8?
Or an Alesis old ADAT 16bits/modern 20bitsblack with dead heads? Or Tascam Adat clone with 8mm video tape ones?
What makes a convertor a good convertor?
Not a single firestation on ebay... :P

http://bdm.cc/2014/02/adat-layla/
check this out someone actually modified a layla to be an adat expansion for an RME card!wow thats alot of work
:o
i was trying to think what the most modern setup gear wise on mac os 9 could be
and i got to thinking it would involve
one of these:
+ 3 new'ish adat mic pre unit i/os clocked off the RME via BNC
heck even just one, would give u updated quality sound of 2014 in mac os 9
(http://www.soundsliveshop.com/Resources/Content/OctopreD2FR.jpg)
octopre dynamic would do the job nicely;)
couldnt PTLE5guy get similar results by feeding the saffire 56 into the adat in's on the DIGI 001?
i suppose the difference is word clock.. support.. the digi must beable to clock via adat /spdif tho..
the other ultimate mac os set up would be the digi 002 + Adat slave unit

ok i see now that the original
Focusrite OctoPre
was very similar to the onyx 800r
i like that feature of the db25 analog breakout i/o
makes it pretty versatile in its use!!!!
are there any other units that have that feature?? i guess not listed here!

looks like theres a new version of the ADA8000 already

The OS 9 ProTools uses the 'ADAT Bridge' (16 channels of ADAT communication ) to integrate these interfaces/ mixers and whatnot.

Aphex Model 141
(http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/141-large.jpg)
ok this is only one way.. digital to analog
so really it doesnt belong in this list ;D
-
another to add:
probably very rare, never seen it listed anywhere.
the midiman pipeline 8x8
http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=525.0
-
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/FCA1616.aspx
behringer fca1616 has same midas mic pres as the ada8200 i think.. minus the xlr connections..
+ is firewire/usb compatible with modern os... and works as a converter in standalone mode to send its analog ins + outs over adat i/o
-
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2482.new#new
looks like the yamaha i88x will support adat
looks like it a rack mount version of the 01x
Yamaha have now introduced the mLAN-friendly i88X, a unit that contains much of the I/O functionality of the 01X, but minus the mixer/control surface elements (in much the same way that Digidesign introduced the Digi 002 Rack based upon the Digi 002). Housed in a 1U rack, the i88X boast an eight-in/eight-out analogue format with two high-quality mic preamps based upon those found in the top-of-the-range DM2000 mixer, plus optical and co-axial digital I/O, direct monitoring, MIDI I/O and, of course, mLAN connectivity. The eight channels of analogue I/O are available simultaneously with eight ADAT channels and stereo S/PDIF, offering a total of 18 channels of I/O at 44.1 and 48 kHz; at 88.2 and 96 kHz, the ADAT connection is multiplexed to offer four channels.
-
not sure if we posted this one (ptleguy or myself)
but this one was introduced to completement the presonus firestudio (which i believe can also act as a adat 8ch converter in standalone, but i may be wrong)
when i first looked at the preonus firestudio 2626 i thought it was the perfect solution..
but then i found out it was discontinued just like everything good .. they make it for 6months and stop making it.. who knows why
this one really is great tho because it has inserts on each channel.. aswell as 8 ins + 8 outs analog.. really alot more to offer here then most competing products
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar07/articles/digimaxfs.htm
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec07/articles/presonusfirestudio.htm
just dont mistake these for the "Firestudio project" as those models have way less features. and are only meant to be stacked via firewire, as they have no ADAT lightpipe at all.
-
i think the digi 002 rack could also be used as a adat slave unit
(http://akmedia.digidesign.com/products/images/digi002rack_big_11483.jpg)
even if its incompatible with os 9..
slaving it to a device that is compatible will allow to access another 8 channels of i/o
-
(http://medias.audiofanzine.com/images/normal/tascam-fw-1804-629129.jpg)
also the tascam fw-1804 could be used as a slave
-
Can be the AdatBridge from Digidesign valid for this list ?
-
Can be the AdatBridge from Digidesign valid for this list ?
the adat bridge differs in that it doesnt actually provide the channels,
still requires an ADAT 8 channel input device
hence the "bridge" part of its title.

So how can this work without drivers?
-
It could work as 8 channel analog to digital and 8 ch digital to analog.
You Still need an ADAT interface
-
There are cheap Adat interfaces like digi 001/2, m audio 18 14, motu, tascam...
Adat is spdif*4
Instead of 2 ch is 8ch
-
For 2 tracks is better (and cheaper) spdif than ADAT
-
Emagic emi/a62 or 26
-
The firestation sounded great but it was buggy as hell even in standalone mode. After an mlan update completely bricked it and presonus was all "sorry lol" since I had missed their window for free trade-ins for a firepod, it literally went in the trash.
There's a good reason they're so cheap
-

Good to know refinery! I think I remember DieHard reporting something similar , that they were buggy.

But do you have original CD-ROM for Firestation, or is it in trash too? I think there is the only driver version that really works with Firestation without update. And Firestation should not update, it brakes compatibility to all mLANa devices and Mac speed requirements go high.
-
I know we're Mac OS 9 here but fore the sake to make the Firestation work...

Are you talking about that MLAN Firmware update for the Firestation? - see attachement
-
I talking about, opposite the not updated Firestation...original CD-ROM had Mac OS 9 drivers for it.
-
So the firmware update did never correctly work?
