Title: Wanted: Lemur Pro (Cerl Sound Group)
Post by: pmj on April 06, 2021, 11:19:10 AM
Does anyone know what the last version of the Lemur Pro software was for Mac OS 9.2.2 from the Cerl Sound Group?

http://www.cerlsoundgroup.org/Lemur/

I have v4.0.1 here, just wondered if there was anything more recent?  There are assorted dead links on the web from technical papers and the like but not finding very much in the way of downloads.

Thanks, I have marcohack but haven't come across "past" before, what is it?

some student´s work which lets you edit lemur data & roughly compare audio for similarity.

(not compatible with the lemur family but) here is a copy of the latest (i.e. last & non-expiring) spear for CFM - including the MacOS9 icon i made.

Ah great, thanks for those!

I didn't realise this ran under OS9, I've used it a little under X.

Speaking of X I don't suppose you downloaded this Unisyn 2.1.0 installer while it was around?  Seems like no one grabbed it...

thanks for that!  i read that "past" can do timbral morphing, but there was also a "stand alone" version called "LemurMorph" that implemented this as well?

I actually prefer a slightly older version of Unisyn under 9, I forget why now but I think it seemed more stable than 2.0 and happier with FreeMIDI.  OMS clashes with some SuperCollider stuff I run and I’ve never worked out why so I don’t use it.

Be interesting to try that 2.1 under X though

I'm not :)

He says Kelly Fitz was primary author on Lemur Morph and the best person to advise so I'll post again if he comes back with anything.

I haven't seen an actual app for this, is there a link?  There's lots of verbose command-line stuff you can do but that's all I've seen:

great, looking forward to that.

i meant diphone and audiosculpt. i should have a [k] by +...+ but i have no idea where - the ones i have installed since 20 years dont work. :)

and openmusic and ASA and all this stuff is all OSX only.

"working with" happens in max/msp here, but i am interested in anything which can analyze, organize, formatconvert or in best case even edit SDIF data.

does anyone have a binary of ceres3 and/or ceres4?

3 should be easy (it just requires X11)

https://github.com/jeremysalwen/Ceres4

for the operation of the OS9 version of sculptview a 3-button mouse is required.

Thanks for those, will have a look. I used ceres3 a long time ago on someones Linux machine but have never had much luck compiling it for a Mac.

i meant diphone and audiosculpt.

I've attached Audiosculpt 1.2ß1 PPC from the big audio app repository in case it's useful, it seems to be from the IRCAM Forum with a serial number.  Works OK here under 9.2.2 but I haven't spent much time with the command line scripts and don't have a good grasp of the script format.  There's a lot of examples in there to play with though.

Never seen Diphone.

Little update, Fitz has no recollection of anything called "Lemur Morph" and doesn't have access to a suitable Mac or any of the old software from that era.

He suggested it could possibly be something Steve Berkley (Bias, Peak, Antares etc) worked on at Dartmouth so I've emailed him, also dropped Christopher Langmead who wrote PAST an email to see if he remembers it.  Will update again if I hear anything but seems like a bit of a blind alley at the moment.

It's a real shame there doesn't appear to be a Wayback or backup of the old Darmouth ftp site where this stuff was kept.

Update of sorts here, these seem to be the Lemur related applications (With Lemur Pro and PAST) that were held on the old public ftp.music.dartmouth.edu site:

LemurMorph (Tellman, Haken & Holloway, 1995)
QuickMQ (Steve Berkley, 1994)
MQT (Ted Apel, 1994)

Outlined here:
https://quod.lib.umich.edu/i/icmc/bbp2372.1995.048/4/--lemur-a-tool-for-timbre-manipulation?page=root;rgn=full+text;size=150;view=image;q1=lemur

I've contacted Dartmouth to see if the old server contents are around anywhere, there is a crawl from 2008 on Archive.org but it misses anything useful relating to Lemur.

Tom Erbe sent me a list of interesting reading, posted here if anyone is curious:

https://quod.lib.umich.edu/i/icmc?rgn=full+text;size=25;sort=occur;start=1;subview=short;type=simple;view=reslist;q1=lemur

If Dartmouth turn up anything I'll post again but that appears to be "it" for now.  The authors of those applications don't seem to have copies any more.
