Before you read this thread, please be aware that we have bootable installation CD Images
for Mac OS 9.2.2 for both the MDD FW400 & MDD FW800 in our downloads area.
FW400: http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2109.0
FW800: http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2143.0
Also, be aware that you do NOT need to have OS X loaded at all, if you wish to create a Mac OS 9.2.2 only PPC.
If you wish to create a Dual boot PPC G4; simply install OS X 10.1 thru 10.4 (remember to check the "Install OS 9 drivers" when initializing the hard drive) and then extract and drag our Mac OS 9.2.2 Updated "drag Install"

Hello guys,
I'm making this tutorial for you guys because i myself had a very hard time to get OS 9 to work on my Powermac MDD.
So in this tutorial i will explain in depth how to get OS 9 to run on your MDD model.
Notes:
- You need a FW400 model, FW800 will not work.
- You can't use a normal Mac OS 9 CD you need a special recovery CD which i will provide a link for.
- Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required cause you need OS 9 Drivers to get it to boot
- I ONLY TESTED THIS WITH A SECOND HARDDRIVE so I'm not sure if this works with a second partition on one drive.
Requirements:
- Powermac G4 MDD FW400
- Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger
- Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
- Mac OS 9 (Recovery CD) http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-922-powermac-g4-mdd (http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-922-powermac-g4-mdd)
Partitioning:
So for the beginning you need to put in your OS X 10.4 Tiger CD and go to disk utility in the installer.
Now make 2 partitions on your harddrive, one for OS X and one for OS 9 (Or you can use 2 harddisks like me.)
Make the first partition "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the second one "Mac OS Extended" (Read somewhere that OS 9 Will not boot on Journaled).
Installing:
So from here on you can go into 2 directions, that is go ahead and install OS X Tiger or quit this installation and put in your OS X Leopard CD in. (yes you can choose which one you want)
Now just install OS X like you would normally do and meet me at the next step.
OS 9 Preparation ;D:
So now that you have installed OS X Tiger or Leopard its time to get to the part you all came for.
Download the .dmg file from the link i gave you on your mac. Or download it on your pc and place it on your mac via usb.
Now that you have the .dmg file on your desktop double-click it and there comes a new file on your desktop called "OS 9 Content".
Now you open your disk utility and go to your second partition or harddrive and restore it
With as source: "OS 9 Content" and destination: "Second partition/Harddrive".
Booting:
Now you all think lets restart this Mac and hold option/alt key to select OS 9 and boot it.
This will not work for some reason so stay in your OS X Leopard/Tiger.
Go to System Preferences > Startup disk and select the OS 9 Partition/Harddrive.
From here on you are ready and now you CAN use option/alt key to select which OS you want to boot and don't have to use Startup disk anymore.
Thanks for reading guys i hope you liked it.
Feel free to correct me on my English since it is not my native language.
Sincerely,
A guy that wants to help you MDD users out.
-
Thanks you might wanna add some pics if possible and print that to a pdf for offline use.
-
I will do that! :D
Thanks for the reply
-
No problem
-
Easiest:
Boot the computer from a CD, format the HD and copy or install the Mac OS onto it. :D
BTW: If your MDD is the FW800 model, use the iMic ROM. ;D
... and Install Os X If you wish.
-
Thats the whole problem with te Mac OS 9 MDD version.
It isn't bootable, it also isn't an installation at all.
This was a CD that you would get with your MDD back in the day for recovery.
Thanks for replying

Yes it is.
You only have to record it to a real CD.

Bollepoes: welcome
but some of the facts u are stating are old information
if u read our pages here on the forums u would see that we have overcome this fw800 limitation of osx only.. and that we are able to help users install mac os 9 onto any mdd, even the fw800 models..

Yes... And soon I'm hoping to boot OS9 on my iPhone!!!😁😁😁

Hi guys,
I have a problem when i do partitions. I can't see "Install OS 9 Drivers" and i know that it's important to install OS9.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks
Terry

Installing OS9 Drivers has to be done to the entire drive when it's first formatted (before partitioning).

Installing OS9 Drivers has to be done to the entire drive when it's first formatted (before partitioning).
are you sure? i usually do it when partitioning, and when a driver is fucked up i can even add a new one to the disk.
if he cant see the option to add OS9 drivers he either has a mac which doesnt support OS9 officially or he has chosen the wrong filesystem.
i dont know by heart: OS9 drivers require you to use AFP, right? (but that should be the default in 10.4´s disk util ...)
-
Yes I'm sure. OS9 drivers reside at the top level of the entire disk.
They are installed by Disk Utility.
Despite what you think you remember, you cannot install them partition-by-partition.
That's why he doesn't see the option to install them.
Launch Disk Utility, initialize / erase the disk and the option will appear.
-
I tried to erase the disk and the option, i still do not see the option.
Here are some info:
I have an Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.0 DP (MDD)
2 internal hard drive
So, i want to use one with OS X Panther and one with OS 9. Maybe i need to reinstall OSX with tiger but i don't have the cd's install
I need OS 9 to use Recycle 2.0 with my samplers..
-
you can do that in os9 too if you have it running right now, but you cant wipe the boot drive

Lots of stuff going on here…
This thread is entitled "Powermac G4 MDD Mac OS 9 and OS X Leopard dualboot tutorial"
You have an MDD - a perfect machine for those two OS's
NOW you say you want Panther BUT you don't have any OS CDs or DVDs
So, what you're lacking here is knowing the basic procedure to set up your Mac.
YOU NEED: a retail Leopard install DVD (or Tiger, but I would use Leopard) . They're available and cheap on Ebay.
There are also machine-specific discs that are: A) hard to identify properly and: B)will NOT work if they're not exactly the correct one for your computer. Spend the money - get a retail DVD - it will be good to have.
Using the DVD, you will then:
1: Initialize the hard drive, checking the box to…
2: Install OS9 drivers.
3: Partition the drive into at least two volumes.
4: Install OSX into the first one.
Then
5: Boot OSX and set up everything it tells you to.
6: In OSX, download and install TenFourFox.
7: Use TenFourFox to download the OS 9.2.2 Universal CD image from here:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.msg10853.html#msg10853
8: Use that image to install OS9 on your OS9 partition.
As soon as that's done, go to OSX System Preferences and prevent Time Machine (which isn't even working yet since it doesn't have a backup drive to use) and Spotlight from indexing your OS9 partition. Just look at the options and checkboxes etc that you see - it's simple.
Doing this immediately will prevent a whole bunch of weird errors and crashes - don't forget to do it.
Are there other ways to get from where you're at to fully installed? Sure, but I think this is the simplest straightforward and most effective way.
-
Yes... Do what Gary says! ;D ;D
-
Thanks for this detailed answer !
One question: Is it possible to boot on a usb key with Tiger? And then install OS 9 Drivers?
Because i tried this and i can't see the options "install OS 9 drivers"..
-
You have to select the drive to see it and not just the partition.
-
So guys,
I created a usb boot with Leopard.
Here is my problem: i start with alt key. The installation start, and i go to Utilities and erase disk but i can't see "os 9 drivers".
Maybe it's because i need a real Install CD?

You don't need a CD or DVD. I installed Leopard on my MDD using a USB memory stick without any problems (dual booting Leopard and 9.2.2 on the same partition without any issues). You must be missing something.
Make sure that "Apple Partition Map" is selected in the "Options" menu in Disk Utility (see attached picture). It's the only alternative that will give you the "OS 9 Drivers" checkbox.
-

i just said that there can be other reasons why it wont work.

Dont use leopard. use tiger and select the drive and not the partition. leopard has no classic support anymore and maybe not even the os9 driver install option
-
Why i can't format with OS 9 drivers on a hard drive but on a usb key?
-
In the top pic of the HDD, you haven't yet erased it and it has a named volume.
Initialize / erase the top level of the drive and the option will appear.
The USB stick you're showing is blank without any created volumes - hence it has the option showing.
You have to install the OS9 drivers at the top level of the drive before anything else.
-
Why i can't format with OS 9 drivers on a hard drive but on a usb key?
dont use the journaled option
select mac os extended
-
Even when i select mac os extented i dont see the OS 9 drivers.
Maybe i need to Erase in 35 pass?

No, you don't have to do that. Are you sure that you have Apple Partition Map selected?

No problem using Leopard with OS9. I have been doing so since 2007 when it first came out without any issues. And the OS9 Driver checkbox is there in Leopard as well. As long as you have "Apple Partition Map" selected.
-
Ok i will try tonight after work. But i know that i can't the the option to format in apple partition map..
-

Then that's your problem.
-
Anyone know a solution for this problem?
-
make screenshots and show us what you do.
make sure you select the drive and not the partition
after selecting the drive erase it and select in the options apple partition map
-
Here i start the mac by pressing alt for booting with a usb key with tiger
-
Then i go to disk utilities
-
And now you can see i don't haver any options with apple partition etc..
-
Strange... Perhaps it's because it's an empty disk with no partition map (scheme) yet?
If you partition it with one partition in "Mac OS Extended" and get a partition sheme on it, do you see it then?
Should look something like this:
Is the drive configured as a master or a slave drive? I have had tonnes of issues trying to get drives configured as slave to work, but it shouldn't matter. You should get to install the OS 9 drivers either way.
-
Do you get a different result if you boot from Tiger installed on the second drive and use its Disk Utility?
You no longer need the USB stick.
Probably not the solution, but should be checked…
-
I tried all your solutions but didn't work.
I don't understand why i can erase with OS 9 drivers on my usb key and not on HDD.
-
my son thinks human inclination to help is built in. showing of, is my bet. sorry. :)
-
I tried all your solutions but didn't work.
I don't understand why i can erase with OS 9 drivers on my usb key and not on HDD.
This is what happens sometimes when you try to troubleshoot on a forum. What would take 5 minutes to go and test in person takes days of back and forth.
OK… Let's try some deductive logic:
You have TWO internal HDDs installed and a USB thumb drive.
We know you can get the OS9 drivers option showing on the thumb drive.
You cannot get it on at least ONE internal HDD.
SO, How about the other internal HDD?
If you choose "Erase" on the other one (you don't have to actually erase it of course) does the OS9 option appear there?
If YES, then you have one drive that won't cooperate and the problem is specific to that HDD only. So…
Do a complete erase of that drive (one-pass is enough) then try to initialize it again. If it now works, there was something about
the formatting (who knows what?) but it's fixed. If it still won't cooperate, you may have to replace it.
If NO, and neither drive will allow OS9 drivers, then it's a different issue entirely. So…
Check the connections to the HDDs and the drive settings. In an MDD, the drives must be set to "cable select" rather than "master"
and/or "slave". This is probably NOT the problem because I don't think they would even show up properly in the profiler and maybe
not function at all if set incorrectly, but who knows? Maybe they can and do. It does mean that there's something about both
identical drives that the OS doesn't like, we're one step closer to the answer, and we go from there.
Which is it? Holler back.
-
No, the OS9 option doesn't appear on the other one.
I will try to change the settings tomorrow.
Thank you very much for your help guys, it's nice to know that i can count on people like you. I hope that we will succeed in resolving this problem !
-
So, I changed the settings of the HDDs to "Cable Select", still nothing to do. Do i need to buy a new HDD?
-
Maybe I am late...
-
This is weird. Why you have the OS 9 driver box and not me?...
-
Try to change its partition type to APM when choosing another than current schemme
-
Changing it should allow to choose APM. Or try to format to mbr in an Intel machine and the format back to APM. Maybe the drive is faulty for APM
-
Yeah, i will buy a new one because i can't see "Options" to choose APM.
Do you have any suggestions for the right choice of HDD?
-
I recall seeing here somewhere and experienced this myself.
Disk Utility in Tiger and Leopard check the compatibility value in open firmware.
This was the original change to make OS 9 run on the FW800.
If a value is not set there, then Disk Utility knows that the machine can't boot into OS 9 so it doesn't provide the option.
A temporary change in Open Firmware tricks Disk Utility Into allowing OS 9 drivers to install.

iMic did a Mac OS X software to fool that IIRC

nano but how can this happen? his dual 1.0 should be OS9 booting by any means.
Disregard my post. I read over the post including the machine too fast and missed the model details. Just saw MDD and assumed FW800. Didn't see the DP 1 GHZ.
-
Ok guys, it works !!
I used Identity Tool to boot as a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio with MacRISC, MacRISK3 and MacRISC3.
After starting the Mac, I went to disk utilities and the option "Mac OS 9 Drivers" was here.
To install mac os 9, I used the method of "Bollepoes" in the top of the topic.
Thank you all of you guys for your help !
-
Great to hear it's working!
So, what the hell was all this about? Damaged firmware? Previously "hacked" firmware? About all we can say for sure at this point is that this should not have happened. We've fixed the problem without identifying the cause.
Where did you get this MDD? Anything odd in its past you know of? I'm curious.
-
Honestly I do not know too much where the problem came from, apart from that I did not have the box "OS9 drivers" that appeared.
I bought it to a private person.
Maybe I do too much installation and erasing drives, before trying to install the os 9, who knows..?
-
I change topic, does anyone know how to install scsi manager 4.3?
I need it to recognize my Microtech Usb-Scsi db25 in Recycle.
If a topic already exists, please redirect me to it.
-
I posted something here that I didn't mean to. Ignore me.
-
Okay everybody, stop me before I "kill again".
Just downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.4 Leopard from MacGarden and successfully burned an install DVD. I've also got an original OS 9 install disc and I'm wondering if this is the route to go... and then install the 9.2.2 update. Or, per GaryN's comments of January 19th 2007, should I proceed with the 9.2.2 Universal image available here?
Should I also have sought an original Mac OS X Leopard disc install set as opposed to the MacGarden variety?
It's an MDD DP FW400 with two (smallish) internal drives currently running OS 10.5.8 and OS 9.2 but I want to clear drives and begin fresh-ish... moving only what I wish back from a Time Machine back-up that I've yet to perform.
Originally, I intended to go only with a standalone 9.2.2 install but evidently, schizophrenia appeals to me in some sick and demented way.
I'll be wrasslin' with Time Machine (which I've never used), attempting to utilize a large external USB drive as target back-up residence. So, total DESTRUCTION is not imminent at this time. And yes, I'll pull the faster USB/Firewire PCI card from the machine before the attempted software re-install... and then, re-install the USB/Firewire card after successful software installation, to move select files and apps back to the machine.
...'til Daddy takes the T-bird away.
-
This subject is like the damn shingles… it goes away and comes back over and over and over.
Since you make a point of declaring your schizophrenia, I won't attempt to tell you what to do, but shall only make a few pertinent points..
• The 10.5.4 Mac Garden image is fine. Just do the rest of the updates to 10.5.8 after installation before you start with OS9.
• I have no idea what you mean re: pulling the USB/FW PCI and replacing it or why you would need to.
• As I've said many times before, Time Machine will trash your OS9 directory. Do NOT use it to back up your OS9 install. Lock your OS9 drive, partition, whatever out in TM prefs. Use CarbonCopyCloner or some such utility for OS9.
• Spotlight can and sometimes does also trash the OS9 directory. Lock it out too.
• I love T-Birds. I owned three of them.
-
Thanks G. My apologies for the re-hash/rash of this subject. I mentioned only that schizophrenia evidently appeals to me. (I personally remain untested.) Your comments are appreciated und Time Machine always has seemed suspect to me. The PCI card will be removed and then reinstalled only as a precaution/superstition. OS 9.2.2 shall come from here after the 10.5.8 update is installed.
Again thank you… I shall proceed. (Probably only to eventually find that I didn’t need Leopard in the long run anyway.)
Of course, I preferred the original T-birds.
Much like OS 9.
