Title: E-Mu Classic Series Sample CDS
Post by: supernova777 on March 19, 2015, 11:10:49 AM

I've uploaded a series of 8 (missing vol 4)
of these E-mu Classic Series sample cds
originally developed for the E-mu Emulator III (EIIIX) (1993)
im not sure if they are converted to kontakt
they are mostly in .bin + .cue format
to be burned onto a CD (700mb size?)
(they expand to full disc images)

if anyone would like to take a crack at converting these to a usefull
format  (ie: kontakt, halion, etc)
please check one of them out
they are most likely all the same..
so if one is in kontakt format (.nki) already
the rest probably are the same

i have no idea how to convert..
i think they maybe in e-mu sampler native format
to be used via a scsi cdrom with a E-Mu '90s Sampler
such as E64, E6400, E5000, E4, E4XT, E-4000, ESI-32

heres an example link from one of the discs:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030204001917/www.emu.com/online_shop/cds/esi32_300mblist.asp?REF1=../online_shop/bysound/index.html

they seem to have cross referenced the products on this old 2003 website by compatible product
heres a few example urls but u can just use the dropdown menu top right corner:

this site was backed up from 2003 when E-Mu & Ensoniq were the same company and still active
alot of their content coming from https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/ and http://syntaur.com/default.asp

heres some soundfonts available from digitalsoundfactory: https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/soundfont_products
they also have kontakt products: https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/kontakt_products

Quote
• Emulator Standards
The granddaddy of Emu’s sample library, containing some of the original sounds from the first Emulator. A cross-section of instruments from orchestral to brass and percussive that is never hugely cutting-edge but includes some very useful material nonetheless.

• More Emulator Standards
More of the same but this time with perhaps a greater emphasis on orchestral sounds. The arco strings are of particular note as are the ethnic sounds, which include surdos, berimbaus and sitars.

• Orchestral
Pretty much the same type of sounds you will find on the Proteus 2 Protozoa library, but featuring much bigger and better examples of each instrument. Typical banks require 4-8Mb and there is a great range of all types of orchestral instrument from strings through to woodwind, brass and percussion as well as a couple of grand pianos and a wonderful harpsichord.

• Sound FX
Unless a sound effects library is 30 discs long it generally has only token value, but the selection of ambiences, water sounds and domestic noises on this disc might find a use somewhere. A well recorded and welcome inclusion if only to make you want to think about the other SFX disks in the Emu library.

• World Instruments
Like the Orchestral disc this one will be familiar to owners of one of the Proteus modules, this time the Proteus 3, but again it features larger and more comprehensive examples of each instrument. The selection includes kotos, whistles, bagpipes and flutes, and for the most part provides all the ethnic musicality you could ask for. The plucked instruments usually stand out as the best of the bunch.

• World Percussion Ensemble
Filling in all the gaps in the World Instruments disc, this one concentrates solely on ethnic drum and percussion sounds. Far more than just a bit of African drumming, this disc is as wide a study of global drum sounds as you could imagine, featuring sounds from Japan, Indonesia, Nepal, India, South America and many others.

• Emu Classics
A curious inclusion, as half of the disc features pretty much the same as the Protozoa library, namely Proteus 1, 2 and 3 sound sets. In addition, however, there are some great vintage keyboard sounds in the form of DX7s, Rhodes, and Mellotron choirs.

• Vintage
A few classic organs are included on this disc along with Prophet, ARP, Moog, Juno and Oberheim synths. There are also a few interesting guitar sounds and a couple of percussion sets. Not exactly a ground-breaking disc, but the sounds are well recorded and presented.

OK, I'll take a look ...
Title: Re: E-Mu Classic Series Sample CDS

i think they need to be extracted from E-mu or Ensoniq Format first..
(using Ensoniq plugin for totalCommander (windows) or similar product able to read the ensoniq/e-mu proprietary formats)

I am getting more and some say kontakt..
if they are from 2003/2004 there is a chance they are kontakt 1.5 compatible (os9)

also there is a chance some reason refill will be reason 2.5 compatible (os9)

also there is a chance some soundfont will be compatible? (u said soundfont2 is not ??)
but if from 2003/2004 would that be .sf or .sf2?

Xtreme Sampler Converter sucessfully did the translation.
It can open the .bin file and translate the EMU instruments to the sampler format you wish.

http://www.cdxtract.com/home.php

Yes I did.

The good point about Extreme Sample Converter is that don't need a real recorded CD ROM, it works with the image file (.bin) directly. The bad point is that this App is for Windows only, AFAIK  :'(

so to use CDEXTRACT u have to burn to a real cd first..?

im sure CDEXTRACT would work in combination with Daemon Tools  or other virtual cd mounting app?

Modern Symphonic Orchestra
The Modern Symphonic Orchestra offers a comprehensive collection of over
10GB (five DVDs) of the finest string, brass, woodwind, and percussion
samples - all meticulously sampled for just the right expressiveness in
each recorded note to convey a truly realistic feel.

The library has been set up so that the instrumental sounds of the
orchestra are laid out based on a live performance setup from the
Baroque era. While there are many ways to set up an orchestra on stage,
in working with orchestral samples, this pre-panned Baroque-style setup
works the best to give you the most realistic sound possible.

Programmed specifically for the powerful Emulator X/Proteus X sound
engine, each of the Modern Symphonic Orchestra's presets is mapped to
the MIDI real-time controllers for enhanced expression. The pitch wheel
and modulation wheel, and other continuous controllers create various
performance effects such as: bend-up/ down, voice switching, chorus, or
    layer crossfade.

Together with the included Overture 4 SE notation software, E-MU's
Modern Symphonic Orchestra offers a total "plug-and-play" soundset for
your Emulator X and Proteus X that lets you dial in the perfect
    orchestral sound every time.

the only ones im missing is the Vintage X pro vol 1 /2 /3 of which i only have the first 2 discs of vol 1... I think each of those is 4 discs.. so 12 cds...

these can be used on a pc running emulator X or proteus X / Proteus VX using the pc as a standalone midi module.. or they can possibly be converted..
would love to find out from any of u other guys whether or not they are able to be converted.. as im devoting my time to digging up more of this sort of material.. it would be great if someone else could also try to convert... (other than mactron)

or perhaps some other members have the missing volumes that i have not been able to find.. to complete the collection

Yes, it is. And for most of the others converters too.

I haven't tried this, but I bet that doesn't work. The .bin format can be a simple ISO, but can be complex as hell too. In this case is a EMU format. I don't know much about it, but this is not a ISO format for sure, so virtual mounting it may be very hard if no imposible, IMHO

i also have this
E-MU.Modern.Symphonic.Orchestra.EMULATOR.X.PROTEUS.X-SoSISO

It will be great if you upload it. I use to write some symphonic themes from time to time, and there is a very few Symphonic Orchestra libraries ...

Anyway, you can upload the first DVD only to check about this EMU-X format ...

yes im pretty dissappointed in the lack of contributions by people that have a great deal of info to contribute and never take the effort to write more then 1-2 sentences. its like, why even come here.. ???if not to share hard to find information + knowledge + also recieve some great things in response..

the mondern symphonic orchestra is the same format as the other 8 or so discs that are undre the emulator X / Proteus X folder i uploaded
along with the proteus X / VX emulator X client i will finish uploading

ive started to upload the first dvd of the symphonic orchestra

in the meantime.. i encourage u guys to check out the libraries over here: https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/
some of them are cheap..
such as https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/e-mu-vintage-keys

also there is one more point to make
i think there is a plugin vst that these sounds have been ported to already called  "cakewalk dimension" vst (https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/Dimension-Pro) Mac formats: AU (Universal Binary), RTAS (Pro Tools 6.x & up), VSTi; Windows formats: DXi (XP & x64), and VSTi
and its for mac/pc this would be a better way to make use of these sounds then having to use a standalone pc
running emulator X / Proteus X if it is able to be compatible with the same discs

some are already included in the materials i have uploaded
some we can find online..

im really curious about these

at 70$ a pop these are not cheap;)
i have gotten a bunch of them.. kmost of them.. trying to get the ones im missing
and i will see about postign the entire collection.

symphonic orchestra 5 dvd set seems to be complete.

Are some conversion targets a downgrade in terms of quality?

The best option is to download the E-MU originals, and each one of us, convert them to its preferred sampler format. Even in Mac Os 9 we are not agree on a format to choose, some may prefer Halion, others EXS or Kontakt, others Sampletank, SoundFont, Reason etc ...

Quote
Are some conversion targets a downgrade in terms of quality?

It depends on the source. If the source instrument is simple and basic, the SoundFont or Sampletank format will be enough. If the instruments are complex like this Modern Symphonic Orchestra, (with Key Switches, Round Robin, etc) it must be converted to Kompakt/Kontakt.
... OK, Halion or EXS can be used also, but at its own risk ...  LOL

im trying to find this one - it has a particularly lovely piano
patch i think its called "perfect piano"

Quote from: https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/ensoniq-zr

The Ensoniq ZR SoundFont is a collection of multiple instruments that were included with the ZR76 keyboard. Ensoniq sound designers used the content that had been collected for the samplers. Special note - A Kawai 9ft Grand has been substituted for the Perfect Piano due to license restrictions.

Only Kawai for me.

Yamaha => too bright.
Steinway => nose sound.
Bosendorfer => too dark.
Fazioli => dark and nose sound.

So we have to find this piano ...
BTW, we already have some Kawai around here ... can you guess where they are? In my Custom 32Gb Kompakt Library we have the Wizoo Kawai ( it was available in Halion Format in our old FTP server, but I don't know where I have placed the original CD  :'(  ) . This piano is also available as a VST plugins with the name of Steinberg The Grand.

i have your 32gb library living on my WD Studio Firewire drive 500gb ;)  sample library drive
(http://cdn4.pcadvisor.co.uk/cmsdata/reviews/3310638/wd_mps_2011_01_800.jpg)
i still have to download protoolsguy's library.. if it is still posted?

i will have to put all this stuff in there too once it gets all converted
hmm i forgot this drive has usb2.0 too..  :D

these e-mu samples may not be the best but what i like about them the most is that they are historical.. in that they were used for many songs
that were released in the 90s and late 80s having the same sounds as what was on the hardware units released from 1987 onwards

so those are the only ones he has tested..

why dont YOU test CDExtract for mac os 9? (i posted this in a thread its the same as the osx version it works in both)

and any other "akai format" or "ensoniq format" sample cds in hardware sampler format

Yes, it will work if you record it to real CD previously ( using both the .bin and .cue files usually ). But I'm talking about EMU-X format ( .exb ), the format of the E-MU Modern Synphonic Orchestra.

These instruments were expertly sampled with their natural decay whenever possible, and each bank provides you with both the pure, unprocessed presets, as well as effected versions - all optimized to EMU's unrivalled synthesis engine. As an added bonus there is a special 'Best Of' bank of sounds from the Proteus 3 World module, a true 'classic' in the industry and heard on countless hits over the years. Unique and exotic, these sounds will add a special 'spice' to any composition!

as i suspected the E-mu EIIIX was one of the first Samplers to feature BUILT IN SCSI for attaching an external SCSI CDROM DRIVE frm which to read these samples
which is why they made these classic series cds

some more info on that:
http://synthark.com/synthesizer-museum/emu-gallery/emulator-archive/samplers/emulator-iiix/scsi/

Quote
Emulator IIIx : SCSI

Overview SCSI is an industry standrad hardware and software specification that allows high speed data transfers between different pieces of equipment. SCSI devices can include hard disks, tape drives, optical disks and computers. The EIIIx has two SCSI connectors as standard, which operate at SCSI 1

Cable Type The EIIIx uses a 50-pin Centronics type connector, and the EIII a 25-pin DB25 connector. Always use high quality cabling with all pins wired.

Cable Length Limit the total SCSI cable length to 15 feet.

pretty awesome for 1993
im surprised to see AES/EBU connections. + XLR outputs

apparently there was a keyboard version of the emulator III too
from 1987 many years prior

with 16 individual outputs!!

The good point about Extreme Sample Converter is that don't need a real recorded CD ROM

just like chicken or cdextract, too. :)

on the 1996 emu website backup we see these cds were originally 95$ each!!!
also shows that a few of them are missing from the collection
and verifies that these discs date from prior to 1996;o

Yes, it is. And for most of the others converters too.

it should work, i´ve converted thousands of akais directly from toast image files using cdxtract.

(but because of the chrashes when browsing bad images i´d recommend to still do it in bluebox or OSX.)

it is kind of the main function of this program, and it is the very first function in the menubar. :)

I've made a few test with this E-MU Modern Symphonic Orchestra, and I have found that really sounds good.
Most instruments are not chromatically sampled and with few (or only one) velocity layers but it's a 10 GB library with the instruments very well organised.
It is superior than Garritan SO and inferior than Vienna SO. It sits comfortable between EWQLSO Silver and EWQLSO Gold in terms of quality.

Thanks for the review!

Could you describe approx. the weight of Garritan SO, Vienna SO, EWQLSO silver and gold ? I mean GB per library. We know some libraries weight more that them worth... And others, surprisingly with low GB sound great.

I agree with Chris, this sound are historical.

Garritan SO = 1.8 GB
EWQLSO silver = 2.6 GB
EWQLSO silver XP = 6 GB
EMU Modern SO = 10 GB
EWQLSO Gold = 16 GB
EWQLSO Gold XP = 26 GB
Vienna SO Opus 1&2 = 26 GB

re. EIIIX

yes it has SCSI, Yes you can get it to work with CF Flash via a bridge.  You can create images on the CF cards that replicate a CD and read them.

But, it will not read CDs with an ordinary CD SCSI drive.  You have to use a x2 drive for some reason.  So you have to put a 2x SCSI drive on it to read AKAi and import that way.

Do note this is the last Emu Sampler that read EII and EIII samples correctly.  The later E4 Ultra series does not read or convert properly and often LFO is assigned 100pc to Pitch and other weird quirks.  The timings of envelopes, filter frequency setting are all wrong too

in any case the EIIIx sounds much better than any other later E-mu sampler and i A/B them. The EIIIx is terrifically loud too with amazing bottom end and a very analog sounding filter.  Its 90pc of the way to a EIII with an analog filter in my opinion and it can be found cheap.   If you get an EIIIXP you can upgrade it to have sampling with the insertion of 3 chips into sockets and soldering on some jacks.  The input has similar 'gain scaling' magic that was deployed on the EII, with modern IC chips.  essentially, anything that goes in maxes the ADC resolution, so 'quiet sample' does not mean 4 bit of DAC - as is the case on your 24 bit 192hz audio setup.

This is what, Rob Lodes, of Digidesign had to say about the EIIIX way back, when comparing it to the past products (full post here http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Emu/info/e-mu.History.txt (http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Emu/info/e-mu.History.txt):

" EIIIx
=====
This machine almost never saw the light of day.  It was canceled something
like 3 times.  I don't know who the people were that stuck to their guns to
keep it alive but they should be praised and looked at as role models for
all of us.

The EIIIx is the Emax II done right.  They made it 32  stereo voices. They
put in two H-chips, digital in (both spdif and AESEBU), if you got the
analog add on it could sample at 44.1 or 48 (this input is better then
anything I've used to date, it sounds awesome).

The put in all kinds of very cool software including realtime sample rate
conversion (go digital in an what ever sample rate and it comes out the
digital outs at 44.1) and a host of other dsp code.  These guys can write
the killer dsp.

It's 16 part multi-timbral.  The filters "model" the EIII's filters in that
they are 4 pole low pass resonating.  The modulation capabilities are
decent (but not up to xpander levels).

They put in very good SCSI support.  You can even hook it up to a Macintosh
a transfer sounds back and forth.  It's expandable to 32 meg that's user
expandable.

Over all it's one of the best sounding samplers you can get your hands on."

Hi,

I would love to have these sample cd's and can arrange an FTP account for you on my own server. How much space do you need?

Cheers,

Also looking for these - moderators, is it possible to explain whether they were uploaded to FTP at some point and how to download?

These packages seem to have become public domain at some point, available free for years on the E-Mu web site, but that site has now been wiped and only has headphones on it. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I was going to say that this would be the place to upload sample libraries to....and then I realised they are all using external file storage links. Google drive though is suggested...
In any case as an Emulator X3 user with ChickenSys I am keen especially to get the full world music stuff...
I get that it's quite a hassle though and quite a lot of data too.
As a couple of others have said that's why I joined this site...I run PC (I fondly remember MacOS9 though!) On which note, what do you guys think, did Emu shoot themselves in the foot or what when they made Emulator X PC only! At that point I think the majority of Emu sampler users were on Mac!

I wanted to hop in and see if anyone had tracked any of these e-mu collections down? Mactron, thank you for the tutorial on sample set conversion.

Did these get backed up, or does anyone have these e-mu iso files?

I found a collection of reason RFL files from 2003-2011 if anyone is interested in trading.
