Title: powermac G5 graphics card question
Post by: macStuff on December 02, 2018, 01:49:08 AM
just a quick question for those that have the experience + knowledge to comment

is it worth the time/effort to flash a Geforce GT 6600 in order to replace a Radeon 9800 Pro?
(for use in a powermac G5)

i know the 9800pro was from early 2003, and the 6600GT is from later in 2004, so its kind of like jumping up a year in technology..
and the 6600GT was tweaked for gaming etc by manufacturers wasnt it?

is it worth the time effort? will it make a difference in day to day use working in osx software?

The 6600 isn't really an upgrade from a 9800pro, one was a flagship card, the other was a mid end solution.

The 6800 Ultra would be a nice upgrade, and a 6800 GT would be around the same as the 9800Pro.

It depends on software you are using. In my personal experience the movement from 6600LE to Quadro FX4500 was nothing in 2D performance of 104fox, Ableton Live and Photoshop.

darth.
according to the numbers i have recorded;
some 6600GT go up to (500mhz) wheras the radeon9800 pro is around high 300s (380Mhz)
its also a newer chip technology NV43 (Apr 2004)

radeon 9800 pro specs: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-9800-pro.c1818
msi Geforce 6600GT specs: https://www.cnet.com/products/msi-nx6600gt-geforce-6600-gt-agp-8x-128mb/

hmm i thought the 6600GT was closer to a x800/x850 in specs i guess not
