Yes. I think that’s what I used on a previous 1.42 MDD. Read this thread for more info:

Another way to make it boot is to flash the NewWorld ROM of the FW400-only MDDs, I heard.

In any case, it ends up being a slightly-less good machine than other MDDs, as the FW800 port works at FW400 speed, and the 2 FW400 slots don't work, meaning the result is 1 less FW400 interface.

On the other hand, it is the best 32-bit PowerMac for OS X (10.1.5 Puma with a special kernel version ~ 10.6 SL alpha), which is nice for people dual-booting (not me, OS 9 only here).

reporting back

budget acquired 1.42DP G4 MDD
boots and operates great on the Os9.2.2.

What I did
Booted working 1.25 SP G4 MDD in OS9
I loaded the (for non Supported machines) OS9 iso into toast
Then installed the OS9 (for non Supported machines) on a new fresh drive sitting on the MDD External Sata Card
installed drive into budget acquired 1.42DP G4 MDD
pressed the power button! BAM OS9 on a FW800
