Hi!
Looking to kit one of my G4's with a SATA SSD, so I'm
In the market for a SATA PCI card for it.
A Sil3112 card or anything that works with Mac OS 9 will do just fine :)
-
macos9-bootable or non bootable?
-
Mac OS 9 bootable :)
-
Knez... I thought you were leaving the OS9 arena and moving on ?
Well, it's good to see you still have a use for it :)
-
u might aswell go for the cadillac

We had to move on in the studio, but I took the MDD home and made it my main machine. Trying to really max it out now and since I won't be using TDM hardware at home I can stick a SATA card in it :)
FirmTek only gives out international shipping costs through email and I haven't heard back from them yet.
MacTron, if you see this; where did you buy your SeriTek card? If you bought it directly from FirmTek, how much did you pay for shipping?

I have two of them ( I only use hardware that I have duplicate - at least- :) )
The first one (SeriTek/1eVE2+2 ) was bought in OWC. It cost me around 100 EURO ( the favored exchange rate paid for the shipping and taxes few years ago )
The second one (SeriTek/1V4) was buyed in eBay from an EU user. And it cost me around 100 EURO also (inc. shipping) .
Despite it cost, I think this is a very valuable piece of harware.
-
Buying from FirmTek is a no-go. Just got an email from them saying that none of the PCI and PCI-X cards are available for purchase from them anymore :(.
Guess I have to keep a lookout on eBay for them.
Is the PCI-X Sonnet Tempo cards any good? Are they bootable with Mac OS 9?

No. AFAIK.
-
Correction! Seems like they still have some SeriTek/1eVE2+2 cards left, so get one while you can! Im sure going to.
The other cards are sold out though, at least at FirmTek.

u are forgetting a good number of threads here where there was very valuable information shared re: programming eproms + making your own version of the seritek card using the exact same firmware
as well as other versions of mac compatible sata cards that were discovered + that info was shared here publicly
also the fact that there was a user from england who ran an FTP of mac os drivers + apps who offered to produce/solder SIL3112 cards with the firmware + proper type of ROM chip to achieve this.
these cards are of course only 2 port instead of 4 like the seritek firmtek ones. but they work just the same in regards to bootability + throughput

I'm fully aware that I could flash a generic Sil3112 to work with my MDD, but I can't. I don't have any PCs that I can use and I'd rather spend the money on something that just works rather then spend a lot of my time trying to flash something that don't.
I contacted that "person from England" but haven't gotten any answer from him/her yet.

im guessing for less than half the price of a 1v4 seritek u could get 2 or 3 from max

I'm that "Person for England" :)
I can still produce the cards for anyone who wants them, Just PM me (I don't visit here very often, But I do read my emails so if you PM me I will respond, just it may take a couple of days)
Lead time on them will be around 2 weeks as I have to order the cards in from china
Edit: The cards have got much harder to find! I'm seeing one sensible priced listing on aliexpress, and non on eBay (at least that are sold as sil3112 ones). I can still get them but anyone who wants one should let me know now
-
I want one!
-
Allrighty, Anyone else want one? i'll order a few cards towards the end of the week and produce some more
-
nice one max cheers
-
Do you know what the price will be? Let me know and i'll paypal you asap :)
-

I have two of the max1zzz cards. I can testify that work great, and max1zzz is a "fully recommended seller" :D and with very good customer support. ;D
-

Around the £12-15 mark, I'll take payment once I have the cards as I need to weigh them to work out shipping and I need to get the cards to do that :)
If everyone who wants one pm's me with how many they want i'll do a order of cards at the weekend
-
I'm down for one. If £12-15 range equals about $20.00. Wonder what shipping costs might be to U.S.? Just pm'ed max1zzz.
-
I guess I'll spring for one also! ;D
-
i had some made for me by dougG3 2 years back.. you wont be let down! they work great! great speed + performance, especially on boot time

Only problem I have found with these is that my 2001 Quicksilver dosen't like them, but I don't know if that is the cards or my quicksilver that is the problem, I have used the cards in my MDD, Sawtooth and B/W G3 just fine
Anyhow, I have 5 requests so i'll probably order 10 cards on Saturday to make sure I have a few spares :)

must have been something to do with the original host card itself.. because my 2001 qs works fine with one of the cards doug made! but i posted about that long ago already, i remember u saying that before
anyway.. whoever doesnt have a PCI SATA card... u are missing out on one of the best improvements for a g4 goin! i suggest u get in on this while u have a chance..
-
Ok, brought one of the same cards I will be ordering from china locally, and the good news is they work fine and my MDD happily booted from a sata drive connected to it.
The bad news is I got kinda pissed off at a dodgy connection I couldn't find and took a heat gun to the card to fix it (Which it did :) ) but I melted some plastic parts. I'm going to need to find a better soldering technique for the "production" cards, I have some ultra low melting point solder somewhere so I think i'm going to use that

Finally got the cards from China, will try to get some assembled ready to go out next week :)

Sent a PM.

max are u going to configure those cards to have one external SATA port + 1 internal?
because i might have to go in for one or two aswell if thats the case. none of my cards have external ports
and i think id actually really like to use an external SATA drive.. might end up being better for many reasons
-
The cards are configurable, the four jumpers above the flash chip set weather the cards have two internal ports or one internal and one external
I'm planning to leave them as they are so you would be able to choose what config you want
-
Got my card from Max in the mail today and it works wonderful!
Got my 128gb KingSpec SSD conmected to it and it feels insane speed wise :D

Nice :D Can't wait!

Just want to add my name to the list! I've been looking for a sata card for a while.
Pm sent to max.
Thanks!

Ok..... I may have vanished for a third of a year, But I do have some cards actually ready :) I currently have 6 cards assembled, flashed and tested, With 3 more soon to follow.
The cards are £15 + shipping.
I kind of gave up with these cards for a while, they are not as nice to work on as the old black cards, the chip is in a awkward place to solder by hand and the PCB is a better heatsink than the black cards which made them harder to solder with hot air. I have recently replaced my £45 Attan 858D+ hot air station with a well over £500 Hakko FR-810b so decided to give the cards another stab, and it seems quality tools make all the difference :)
On another note, if anyone knows a source of the old black cards let me know! I would like to get my hands on a decent sized batch of them......
-
I'm interested in getting one of these if max1zzz has any left, but any suggestions as to a decent setup regarding SSD model and possibly external drive interface/enclosure, etc?
Anyone who has one of these up and running good, what is your setup like? QS 933 is the computer I'm considering. Recommendations and tips very welcome!
-
I still have a few, Send me a PM if your intrested

Thanks max! Didn't expect to see you here so soon!
I will PM but looking for some input from people who have a SATA card, preferably one that you made, and what drive they use and what is working for them. The SATA/SSD topic is kinda strewn about the forum, hoping for a few pointed replies.
We have this at least:

I know a few others here have ordered some, at least I thought they had...

Are still early quicksilvers out? IIRC Eyoungren from MacRumors had troubles with non Sonnet SATA cards on his QS on 10.5 too.

Mine is a QS 933. Running OS 9 btw. I take it there are no issues with any of that?
I'm trying to clear up the details so I don't end up spending money in the wrong places..

Dont get me wrong. Maxx1 cards are unique and state of the art. And they boot OS9 IIRC. They are just delicate/finicky with some QS.
The easiest solution is to buy a G4 Digital Audio motherboard (they have been reported as working) and exchange it, using with IDE drives with less than 120 Gbytes and the SATA big ones with the Maxx card.

Meant to reply a day or two ago..
Yeah, they boot OS 9, because Knezzen specifically inquired about it as a must in his first post! I paid attention to this thread, but forgot some of the specifics and had to reread.
It appears that Max is the only one (that I can see) who reported having troubles in the 2001 QS, another person has it working in their 2001 model and mine is a 2002 QS.
Thanks for the links btw. I have read that disk upgrade thread before on this site, more than once. I don't know whether I dived into it, or drowned in it! :o Lots of divergent info there, very easy to get lost in some of that.
Maybe I should just take a chance and buy the card and see what happens?
