Title: OS9 Booted on 867Mhz Powerbook G4 (unsupported) 12"
Post by: TGOTR on September 07, 2015, 02:34:46 PM
I installed it, it is up and running, but there is no sound. Sleep mode also doesn't work (says there is some missing software).

Should I reinstall the unsupported OS9 disk. I know the speakers work since it does the bong when I boot it.

I figured out the sound issue, kind of. For some reason, the system auto switches to headphones, so I put headphones in the jack, and audio came out of the speakers....weird.

Was briefly running OS 9 on a 1Ghz Alu 17 inch and there was issues with the optical drive playing a DVD or CD... Don't completely remember as I had Hard drive issue and didn't investigate any further.

Mine has no issues with CDs or DVDs.

But I am tinkering with extensions to see why it defaults to headphones. If anything, I can take a phono plug and ground the pins to make a quick blanking plug.

is it possible to put a regular Airport card in the PowerBook G4 rather than the Airport Express card?

Can you take a screenshot or just a list of the extensions loaded?

Yeah I thinking you could resort to a 'dummy' plug if you can't get it sorted out.

I used the OS9 Unofficial ISO, the one with the restore OS9 option. It was loaded with extensions, but I deleted the ATI ones, since this powerbook has nvidia. I haven't touched any others.

I never needed it so im not sure whats on the disc. A list would be nice. I remember having a sound issue with my mdd and i disabled a apple extension and that solved my prob.

So, I am assuming you have a Apple PowerBook G4 867 12" (Al), since the TI 15" directly supports OS9 and we have the original disk image in our downloads.

Did you use the Mac OS 9.2.2 Install (for unsupported G4s) from our site here ?

If so, please report, if all other ports/drivers are working besides the sound.  Thanks :)

I am sure iMic would love to know, we really have to start making a G4 model list with results or what is working and what is not on a per model basis.

UPDATE
I started adding Machine specific hardware notes here:

OS X reports the Powerbook as Powerbook6,1 which is not compatible with OS 9.

everything works aside from Airport and Sleep mode.

It is awesome that this model works in OS 9, but for a DAW the TI is a much better choice; more CPU cache and Better screen size/resolution.  if you already own one, now you have options :)

For those that are looking to buy a Powerbook for an OS 9 DAW, the best choice is still a 1 Ghz. TI 15" with the 867 coming in 2nd.

The dream machine for OS9 would be: Apple PowerBook G4 1.0 17" (Al) Specs
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.0_17.html

But we need someone to test the unsupported OS 9.2.2 setup, this may be a real possibility sice we have a G4 7455 in this baby, and the NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go may use the 4600 TI driver; Mactron may be able to guess this one out a little better :)

Title: Powerbook G4 867MHz Al. Airport or wireless in general.
Post by: stumingg on May 03, 2016, 03:49:24 AM
Hi

I searched the threads here and noted a few references to wifi not working on the unsupported machine above. I thought about joining a thread but decided to start an new one. Hope that's OK!

I have the above machine booting into OS 9 using the Mac OS 9.2.2 image downloaded from this site. I have a couple of questions about getting wifi to work with this model:

1. I'm unsure which airport card I have in my PB G4 and not that good around OS 9 yet. How can I check which one I have?
2. Given that I've probably got a card that word with OS X but doesn't with OS 9, what airport card do I need that works with my machine and OS 9?
3. Once 1 and 2 above have been resolved is it just a matter of running the airport software included on the disk image to configure the card?

I'm aware that there is only WEP security (I think) with OS 9, but I'm OK with this as I have a second wireless network that I'm locking down as best I can and only allowing legacy devices to connect, such as my Newton and G4 iMac.

Thanks for any help given!

Stuart

...

1. I took the card out. It says Airport Extreme. No good I'm guessing.
2. Guess I need a classic Airport card. I may have one for my Newton ...
3. Am I right about point 3?

Thanks

Stuart

if you have the chip type airport you are out of luck. there are pcmcia cards that work with os9 i dont know if you have that port.

I searched the threads here and noted a few references to wifi not working on the unsupported machine above.

This is interesting Stuart… It appears (as far as I can tell from what info you've provided) that you have the G4 867Mhz "Titanium" Powerbook there. What's interesting about that is, that machine is not unsupported. It originally shipped with OS 9.2.2 and 10.1 - 10.3. Which 9.2.2 image did you use? (Not that it matters so much, but I'm curious to know if you booted the special "unsupported" image and it worked)

Second, assuming the machine identity is correct, then it originally had the wi-fi slot open and Airport was optional (extra $$). That would be original Airport 802.11b - not Extreme. So now, this is also interesting. You have an Extreme card that doesn't seem to work in OS9 but does in OSX. If so, then you're just lacking a proper Airport extension in OS9. The Airport software from OS9 may not be able to configure an Extreme card, or maybe it will - who knows? All you can do is try. If you can't make it work for lack of software, we've got another hack to think about…

Any Airport experts lurking around here?

AND…is your machine a Powerbook3,5   A1025  or something else?

Apple made one aluminum Powerbook at 867 MHz, the 12 inch.  From everymac.com:

"Apple PowerBook G4 867 12" (Al) Specs
Identifiers: 12-Inch - M8760LL/A - PowerBook6,1 - A1010"

Also according to everymac.com, there is no pcmcia slot on this model.

Post by: stumingg on May 04, 2016, 05:09:54 AM
... yes I have the Aluminium 12" PB G4 867Mhz and it doesn't have a PCMCIA slot no.

So, basically, there's no way I can use a "normal" Airport (not extreme) card (which slides into a slot in the battery bay) with this machine an OS 9? Is this right?

I have had this booted up with OS X 10.3 which had "Classic" and that worked fine obviously, but not what I wanted.

If the airport card wont work are there any other ways to get wifi working?

Thanks for all your help so far.

... ah, I see. So the Airport card is PCMCIA type and won't fit into a G4 PB.

So no wifi then.

There was a Ethernet dongle that took voltage from the USB ports that used wifi but the computer believed it were a direct connection. It was OS9 compatible. They are called wifi extenders too IIRC.

It would shine on a Gigabit ethernet connection, but your 10/100 port should do OK.

We really have to make a section and post all real world results of all "un-supported" G4s.

iMic and I did get some notes together, these are from our public download page...

Quote
Model Specific Hardware Notes:
1. Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.25 DP (FW 800) (Identifiers: M8570, M8840LL/A, Firewire 800, PowerMac3,6)
Firewire 800 ports are seen as FW400 ports are FW400 ports are Not recognized, all other hardware functions as normal

2. Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.42 DP (FW 800) (Identifiers: M8570, M8840LL/A, Firewire 800, PowerMac3,6)
Firewire 800 ports are seen as FW400 ports are FW400 ports are Not recognized, all other hardware functions as normal

3. Apple PowerBook G4 867 12" (Al) (Identifiers: A1010, M8760LL/A, PowerBook6,1)
Sound comes thru headphones, but not speakers

But we really need a consolidated Sticky Note Post with all the key info. for each model.

The Holy Grail of unsupported PowerBooks, Apple PowerBook G4 1.0 17":
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.0_17.html
has some notes from members, but unfortunately, I no longer have one of these around to really put to the test with Audio and Video apps.  IMO, this unit is the most amazing portable asset under OS9 if Video acceleration proves to work and is documented and it is a full 17", much bigger than the 12" that started this thread.

Okay, updates!   ;D
"Let 1k Windows Bloom" took 3 seconds. I was rather baffled by it until I got the results and realized what all those flickering windows were about!  ;) This is with 512 MB of RAM, which is what the machine came to me with (and more than I've ever needed pre-OS-X, honestly… though sticking in 2 GB at some point does sound fun!). Virtual memory is off and I've already tweaked my extensions and such a fair bit—one of my favorite ways to streamline and/or customize! Maybe I should post a list at some point.

No sign of the ambient light sensor or keyboard backlight working, alas. I don't think I actually own any Firewire devices, so someone else will have to test that, sorry!

It's Obvious that the Graphics drivers for the 17" 1 ghz. model under OS 9 work as expected NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (4X AGP) on the 17" AL, Acceleration Lives !, this is awesome; it is truly the BEST portable OS 9 device, De-throwning the beloved TI 1 Ghz.

This has the NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go (4X AGP) graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM in an attractive aluminum alloy case with a 12.1" TFT XGA display (1024x768 native resolution).

This is the most compact OS9 portable. It has less Geekbench than the 867 TI PB. But it can handle more than 1 Gig of RAM (1152 MB adding a 1 Gig module)

... well it works, but what an absolute PITA it was to configure. Japanese "manual" so basically just ended up with a bit of trial and error and Google. The key is to configure it against your wifi network, then turn off the hotspot feature (wifi extending) and then unplug the thing. Sounds simple but took 3 hours!

Still. Good fun.

Cheers

Hi all

I have an interesting evening. My unsupported Powerbook G4 is just fine, and I took apart my old Motu 828mk2 and replaced the LED in it. I also installed Logic 4.7 and downloaded from an archive the Motu Firewire install stuff.

So Now i've got a working 828mk2, plus a working Motu Firewire CueMix Console, which shoes input to the mic I've plugged into the mic/guitar in 1 port on the front of the motto. All good.

Firewire is working!

Testing Al 867Mhz Powerbook G4 with 9.2.2 right now..

I've installed a mSATA + JM20330 green adapter combo - no problems so far and getting speeds in 78-82 MB/sec range.
At first I used ROM file from "Unsupported ..." CD, then changed it to my own version (similar to one I made for 17" 1GHz machine).

The strange thing is that mine runs at 533 MHz (!) instead of 867 MHz, no matter which ROM I use.
Apple System Profiler, PowerLogix CPU Director and NewerTech Gauge PRO all report the same, slower than it has to be, speed. Norton System Info test confirms it - this machine scores lower than PowerMac G4 400MHz.
The "feel" using it, especially with processor intensive applications, is similar. Seems to be slower than TiBook 667.

EDIT. I don't know what I did, I think I switched from Apple CPU Plugins 4.0.1 to version 3.5 and suddenly the machine runs at 867 MHz, as expected. Disk transfer speeds also went up a bit.

I've been copying contents of this 9.2.2 installation from one SSD to the next one all the time. I might have mixed something or picked up the wrong Apple CPU Plugins during my experiments. I'll investigate and report back. Stay tuned..
