There is nothing I want to do that requires me to have any other system, not even the TLS issue @Mat alluded to.

May I highjack the thread even a little bit more, and ask how you handle the Email usage?

Software / Re: Archiving the (family) photos on OS 9

The professional program for your needs is "Cumulus". Evolving from a picture database is was already at Mac OS 7 times promoted as programm for "digital assets". So it can catalog, sort, group, create small preview pictures, etc. for any kind of data. There were even workgroup editions for mixed networks.

Another option would be "ACDsee".

Also of interrest (including various movie options) is "Olympus Camedia Master", but I never used it myselv. Last version seems to be 4.2 and there were also "Pro" versions.

And finally there was a damn fast freeware, that blew away all other programs in displaying the thumbnails by factor 5 or something. But just for photos, and sadly I cannot remember the name right now and it is just at my broken Pismos HD, … :-/

When it comes to stills - iView MediaPro.
IIRC, the trick was to use version prior to v.2, because starting with version 2 it became slow.
I personally used version 1.0.4, which, I think, was 7.6.1 compatible.
I have a fiend, a graphic designer, who used iView MediaPro to catalog all his clip art collections. The tip about the speed came from him. Also, his wife produced full memory card almost daily with her, then new, digital camera. They used iView MediaPro to sort and catalog that stuff as well. I've observed that process on several occasions.
I think you'll be fine if you go with it. As to the videos - I have no idea.

thermal done this time?

Nope, doing the thermal paste is not something I want to get into. As you probably know it's a little bit tricky on these old machines with the fragile pins and unless a machine is overheating (which of course I wouldn't sell) I don't really see the necessity. The most likely cause of thermal issues would be twenty years of dust blocking airflow. When you couple cleaning the machine and replacing the HD with a lower power SSD I am already improving the thermal situation on all of these machines.

Software / Archiving the (family) photos on OS 9

Would be happy to hear from folks how they deal with their photos (and videos, possibly?) ? I have a bunch of family photos that are still sitting in their original resolution in a folder on an external firewire harddisk. Most are just JPG files. A lot of them are from the time when the kids were infants or in kindergarden and I definitely want to keep them and possibly have them easily accessible.

I used to have them stored in iPhoto back when Apple was still supporting it on PPC OSX but found the program somewhat lacking already back then. In short, I never really liked it and got them all extracted in original size onto the external HDD.

I'm interested in a solution for Mac OS 9 that allows me to keep track of them, categorize them and comfortably view them - and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I do have iView Multimedia (3.8.1) installed which I had started to import stuff into, but I'm still wondering if that's really the best solution and what my workflow should be like. So I turn to you with a request for advice :-)

Someone else using iView Multimedia?
Or are you using another software?
What does your workflow look like?
Do you use a batch resizer to get modern 3000x4000px images down to something that OS 9 feels more comfy with or leave the originals as they are?
Any experience as for how many photos iView Multimedia is able to cope with until it gets real slow? (I'm on a 1,42 Ghz Mini)

Any input appreciated!

Video Cards, Monitors & Displays / Re: OS9 and display size

PM9600, G3MT, G3 B&W have a PCI Radeon 7000 64 Mb with a DVI port, so the Apple Cinema Display 23" (A1082) monitor connects to them and works normally at 1920x1200 resolution. Thanks to the community, there is a driver even for Mac OS 7.6.1 that runs on the PM9600.
G4 QS and G4 MDD connect to the same monitor and work smoothly. But it goes without saying, because the flashed Radeon 9000 128 mb and the original 64 mb support it.
G5 DC with flashed X1900 256 Mb also copes with this without problems, but here is only Sorbet Leopard on SATA-III SSD, which I connected via SAS3041E.
The only machine in my modest Power Mac collection that can't boast of high resolution is the PM8100. Too old. ::) I use an HPV video card here, which connects via an adapter to an old Acer AL1917 monitor.

I have a feeling that all the newcomer user base is mostly interested in getting cheap G3/G4, slapping OS9 onto it, playing a retro game or two and then putting the machine back in the corner.

Well to be fair, os9 as daily driver in 2024 isnt really an option

We would profit if we enter a mindset where its just a hobby rather
Than for professional use

Some disagree, but in my case, I don't just disagree: I think the opposite is true.

I think in 2024+, any (near any) Intel/AMD/ARM machine is not only not an option, but also a detriment when used, thanks to various famous hardware-level backdoors (IME, AMD PSP etc.), on top of various purposeful flaws that only get worse with time (soldered SSD and soldered RAM, for example). The most important things we daily do in life don't require a computer at all (and if they do, then something is wrong), but for the few things that a computer really helps us with, you will want decent hardware (PPC, 68k etc.). All versions of Mac OS (not Mac OS X) can run only on such hardware.

There is nothing I want to do that requires me to have any other system, not even the TLS issue @Mat alluded to. GNU/Linux also has a lot of issues, and is far more compromised than is commonly acknowledged, especially in the past 15+ years. All OSes are imperfect at best, of course, but I get all I want or need from an OS with Mac OS 9, be it today or tomorrow. Simply.

For "modern" systems, I think they are (sort of) fine if strictly forever used as an airgap device (no peripherals connected to it connect anywhere else, also obviously no Ethernet, WiFi, BlueTooth etc.). This is actually true for any computerized device to be perfectly honest, but is especially applicable to "modern" stuff, all of which are 100% unacceptable in every regard. Although I think almost no one using "modern" systems (or old systems that were compromised by design, such as any version of Windows starting at least with 95 OSR) is doing that.

In short: I refuse to endorse in any capacity any hardware or software that is flawed by design. Simultaneously, Mac OS 9 is one incredibly useful OS that runs properly on such great devices.
