CPU Upgrades / Re: Mac Mini G4 Overclock just because its fun.

Thanks for your answer. It would be great to know those eBay sellers, because the ones I find don't have stock, they don't ship.

I forgot to mention one important thing: almost all of the 7448 sellers are Chinese. Presumably they go to landfills and desolder all kinds of computer parts and hardware, then they sell them up like that. Nearly all of my sources worked like that, back then. So if you see the seller's items/catalog is a HUGE amount of different computer parts, processors in general and the like, and they have 7448s/7457s, you know you found the right guy. I don't remember anymore, but I think I could buy a bulk of five or so 7448s for something like 25 USD or so. Or was it only 3? I forgot, but I ordered a lot, and helped connect my modder guy to them, too, since he was the one with the skills for the job.

Vision & Studio Vision by Opcode / SVP VST 1 Effect plugin pack
« Last post by gert79 on April 10, 2024, 01:08:28 AM »
For now it is just an idea, but i am planning to create a plugin pack for myself that eventually can be beneficial to others aswell.

Focusing on effect plugins and freely available, so basically nothing that needs a key etc., maybe plugins that are officially "abandonware" could be included.

Ideally having two categories - simple GUI interface and full GFX heavy interface - as some plugins do not work on 1024x768 or are too heavy on GPU.

Arranged by category:
* Compressor/Limiter
* EQ
* Time based effects (Flanger, Delay)
* Other effects (Chorus, Phaser, Panning etc.)  --- (not sure if Chorus counts as a time based effect?)
* Midi plumbing tools? (Akai plugins, do they work in SVP?)
* Whatelse...?
* Etc...

For now i have a set of maybe 20 plugins installed, but initially many did not work, did not show up in the effect list or just crashed my machine when they were called.

For reference, my daily and only driver is a G4 QS 933 with M-audio Delta + Rack breakout box and a Opcode Studio 4, hooked up via Geethree stealth serial port.

Also i am currently refurbishing a "pulled" QS power supply to be sure this part will not cause issues down the line, the supply that is currently mounted is working still but i do not count on it...

If anybody wants to chime in, help building this, feel free :-)
Mind this is all about SVP effects, no instrument plugins, no VST 2.x, only Acadia utilizing ASIO 1 driver and latest OMS.

Software / OS9 doesn't like 'mmod' tag in display ICC profiles.
« Last post by ssp3 on April 09, 2024, 07:54:51 AM »
Since I was doing various display tests with Mac Minis described here,
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=7048.0
I decided to check whether modified ATI drivers permit the use of display calibration software, and, to calibrate the display under test as a side benefit.

As it turns out, they did and display was calibrated. While results were good, when looking at calibration curves and comparing gamuts, from my experience I knew I could do better. I did several runs, just to be sure, but the results were more or less consistent.

So, in next step, I booted into Leopard and used the same or similar software, but newer versions. I thought, I could use display ICC profiles created in 10.5.8 and, since it is the same graphic card/display combination, move the profiles to OS9 and use them there.

The results did not disappoint me - profiles created in 10.5.8 were slightly better and display even passed the tough UGRA display certification test.

Back in OS9. Placed the ICC profiles to where they belong and, surprise surprise, the Monitors control panel in OS9 do not recognize them!

In spent next several hours "pulling my hair" and tried every tool that I have at my disposal to check "those damn" profiles.
File "type" and "creator" in OS9 - correct.
File name and internal profile neme - correct.
ColorSync utilities in OS9 and OSX Intel all report that there are no errors.
Chromix's Profile Doctor in OS9 and OSX reports no errors.
Some other pre-press profiling tools that can look into ICC profiles - no problems.

Then, upon closer inspection, I discovered that my profiles contained the tag that I haven's seen before in display profiles created by the same software in OS9:

mmod

It is some sort of "Apple display and make information". I couldn't remember which of my tools allow complete removal of ICC profile tags, so I went to hex editor and changed the both occurences of mmod to something meaningless - aaaa.
Moved my profiles back to OS9 and, voila, they are recognized and can be activated!

(That's Mini 1.5 GHz with Dell 22" Ultrasharp, connected by DVI-DVI cable + RockHopper2 Driver, btw.)

So, if anyone in the future will have problems with their display ICC profiles, check whether they contain mmod tag.
If they do, destroy it! In OS9 HexEdit will fit the job.

This tag is not mandatory by ICC specs, so there's no danger in getting rid of it.

Mac OS 9, Hacks & Upgrades / Re: Fresh install problems
« Last post by ssp3 on April 09, 2024, 05:14:32 AM »
Now back to the original problem of not being able to find the boot disk, the time waiting has now reduced to 3 seconds of a flashing question mark folder. is that normal?

I have a iSCSI PCI card in the device and I'm wondering if it is seeking this first or that it is somehow delaying the startup?

Yes, that could be it. IIRC, in the boot process, Mac scans for all available busses, polls all devices+ all IDs one by one and waits for their response. SCSI have 7 IDs plus whatever else MDD have.
Also, make sure you have your drive selected in Startup Disk.

Thanks to all those who have replied.

I have had the machine for over 10 years and have tried to use it as a resource for many projects but never really had the chance to get back into using a MDD due to other commitments. However it has always been a reliable computer and not faced any issues.

It's one WD Blue IDE/Pata drive (80GB) with one partition running at 7200rpm with a 8mb cache I believe.

I had the AHT Disc already with the system but soon realised I needed the .7 version not .6 when I was getting invalid memory address issues before boot. This however has made me discover two problems. 1. The dvd drive I used to burn OS 9.2 is broken and not working correctly and the dvd drive in the G4 is also broken.

So with that I have used an apple superdrive in both, this has resulted in me being able to boot the AHT and find no issues exist, but also press a fresh dvd of 9.2 and reinstall.

Now back to the original problem of not being able to find the boot disk, the time waiting has now reduced to 3 seconds of a flashing question mark folder. is that normal?

I have a iSCSI PCI card in the device and I'm wondering if it is seeking this first or that it is somehow delaying the startup? However, if I install Mac OS X Tiger it's straight to the apple logo and no searching for the drive so I'm guessing that rules it out because why if looking for the boot drive would the G4 decide to do things differently just based on the OS change?

I can only think that because the hard disk had Tiger on it the OS 9.2 utility cant see the full disk partitions and the os 9.2 Image is not located right at the start of the disk sector so its taking longer to find due to the wrong location on the Hard Drive. However, I cant confirm this as I don't have a IDE caddie to pop the disk in and analyse the disk on a different computer, unless there is software that can run on Os 9.2 to check the disk or terminal commands might work?

I have pulled the power and pressed the PMU button once as instructed this hasn't made any change, but should I have done this without the battery still inserted? and does the battery on board need replacing, how would I know?

Logic Audio by Emagic / Re: TDM Plugin Packages

It all works really well and can upload my Autoload if anyone wants it? I know Knezzen had some difficulty replicating this setup - as did I too, since the documentation is a right headache!

Resurrecting this thread again. Yes, it's a headache to say the least, but a very cool one (if that's even possible). Are you still with us acelera? I would love to get my hands on your Autoload file so I can try to replicate your Environment setup somehow.

I guess it depends on your setup? What are you running? I have 3x 888/24’s for a dae 24 in/out so my auto load has a “dae” 24 audio tracks 16 busses & 24 outputs & 4 stereo aux channels for esb (native out 1-8 into dae) to “pipe” the native audio engine into the dae layer... Best of both worlds vst & tdm! Also remember the more channels objects you have active in the dae mixer will use up more dsp but that doesn’t matter these days with having mix+++++++ (7+ cards) systems

And you know what? The best solution might just be to get a Mac that was made, say, 10 years ago and see if that couldn't be used as a "bridge" between the latest and the oldest systems... maybe??

I don't know if this still works with Ventura, but I know it does with Monterey... I have VMware fusion running with an install of osx 10.5 leopard on an Intel Mac. Set up file sharing and tell VMware to share your home folders. It's transparent after that. You just want to give the VM a fixed IP address so it stays consistent.
The only catch is it won't show up in OS9 chooser so you have to connect via tcp/IP. Once it's connected you can create an alias and just open that when you need to connect.

Thank you sir. Good to hear from you again!

keithiepoo, I once wrote about it here.
A lot of time has passed since then and you can use the original netatalk project.
All this time I've been using these methods of file transfer. It works great. Now it works on my AppleSolicon-Based Mac with macOS 14.

If you do not use the network, then the easiest way is to use a USB drive or CD-RW, but this is inconvenient.

Knezzen, NFS works well on Mac. Now I'm trying to use NFS on SSW7, but I can't do it yet. :(

Thank you! Wow. All of these options. I love this site  ;D

Is there any specific reason why you're using floppy drive? What about USB thumb drive or smallish external ATA/SATA drive on USB adapter?

Because I never thought of that??
