Hi all,
on my Mainstreet G3 233 I installed a Trascend 144x Flash Card in a PCMCIA adapter.
I run the ZD Benchmark, my plan is to move the virtual memory in the FC.
I was surprised to read that the FC is much slower then the HD, with the sole exception of the random read 512
On average it's 50% slower.

Is it normal?

i can confirm I too have seen very low drive speeds with a similar setup. I was having stability problems with a SD card to ATA adapter, so I tried swapping out to an 8GB CF card on an adapter. the speeds were lower than the SD card on the ATA bus.

I have a 4GB Trancsend CF labeled 266x, wich is slower than my Buffalo USB pendrive.
The CF was used on several systems as a boot drive, but it's in fact slower than a good HD.
(the Buffalo is the fastest USB stick I ever met, about $75 for 4 GB back in the days)

144x is a very bad speed for a flash card
144x is less than ATA33 speed
you want to use a compact flash card that says it supports UDMA5, UDMA6, or UDMA7
its complicated because theres many different speed rating systems at play here:

heres some guidance on the level of rating you need for your compact flash cards depending on what
speed of an IDE port its connecting to, most people are going to need AT LEAST 440x speed rating for
equal performance to an ATA/66 hard drive,
Ultra ATA/33: 33.3 MBps, use at least 220x
Ultra ATA/66: 66.7 MBps, use at least 440x
Ultra ATA/100: 100 MBps, use at least 660x
Ultra ATA/133: 133 MBps, use at least 880x

I suspected I'm using a slow FC. :(
I will try a faster one.
I bought an IDE to FC adapter with the further goal to replace the internal HD

i missed the fact that you are doing this on an older g3 laptop?
if this is your machine:

which only goes up to about 16.7 MBps
if you really want a great improvement,
what i would suggest is that you find a SATA150 adapter for the cardbus/pcmcia adapter slot

of course this probably wont work for portability, and u would need an external hard drive + esata cable i think
might aswell find a newer g4 mac ;) lol
