Hi all!
i posted this already at other places but still i did not get that driver : "MacOS Extensions for Sound Manager support"
http://web.archive.org/web/20000709203217/http://www.phenotype.com/download.html
Does anybody have this ancient piece of code somewhere?
thx, raphael

-
Thx Chris
this is interesting but not the one i'm looking for. - The CBX stuff over there is Windows only i think...
raphael
-
why do u need sound manager support?
-
hi
i would like to be able to record into the mac via the cbx also with other software than Logic Audio on a 68k Mac or/and PPC ones. - for now it's the only functional app which rocks this thing... and as i would like that my young daughters can record some stuff easily with a simple looking GUI , it would be a blast ;-)
-
if u ever find these sound manager driver for this interface it will work with ptfree if you ever wanted to use it;)
-
Hold on: I do have these somewhere, as I had (still have) a CBX.
I just have to dig it up... will post it when I find it.
Have you tried Macintosh Garden or Jag's house?
Pierre
-
Here is the latest CBX-D5 driver I got. goes in the extensions folder.
I also suggest you track down and try Yamaha's "Tiny Wave Editor". Made to work with the CBX, could be a neat sound recorder/editor if not for the fact that you must specify the lenght of your recording before you start recording...
There was also a shareware called "CBX mixdown" I think that let you digitally process already recorded audio by the CBX. Could have been useful, but I never found a way to fully activate it.
Me, I just wish I could revive my copy of Digital Performer 1.4Y that came with the CBX: My authorization diskette is dead...
good luck,
Pierre
-
Pierre there is a copy of 1.7 on the macintosh garden
why not ues 2.7?
-
You mean Digital Performer?
That won't do: DP 1.4Y was a version specifically designed for the CBX. it contains drivers and components to control the routing and onboard effects of the CBX that are not in other versions...
Pierre
-
It's me again...
I did a rundown of the CBX stuff on my old computer, here's what I found:
I have three versions of the CBX extension: 1.00, 1.02 and 1.08.
Seems what I posted in my last message is 1.02. 1.08 is included in this message.
IIRC, it was quite an experience to find the exact combination of system, Quicktime and Sound control panel versions that worked smoothly with the CBX.
there are four versions of TWE I know of: 1.1.5, 1.3, 2.0 and 2.3.
The CBX "controller" utility I mentionned previously is called "MixDownCBX-D5 demo".
I found absolutely no trace of this on the internet, but it says in the docs it was part of the examples included in the MAX 3.5 package...
I also found a collection of message excerpts I had gathered on CompuServe (!) regarding the CBX...
that's it for now,
Pierre
-
im sure cyberish will be really pleased to see someone finally responded.. hes been asking this same message on many different boards all over the net
-
Hi Pierre
this is absolutely amazing news that you found something! But I think you did not attach these files in the right way. It shows Zero k when downloaded! Please, do it again , zipped or so ?!
Thank you very much!
raphael
-
...in the meantime i put here also the CBX-D5 Testapp...
cheers
-
I figured they show up as 0K as the files are pretty small (75K)...
I will think of a way to make it work. but don't expect me to ZIP anything: this is SO un-Macintosh...
I'll probably send a stuffit file.
P.O.
-
OK, here's another try:
this "CBX package" contains the three CBX extensions, the MixDownCBX-D5 utility, and a self-extracting file of the last Tiny Wave Editor I know (2.3), all in a Stuffit file. Any competent OS9-running computer should be able to decompress it.
good luck!
Pierre
-
great pierre! 8) 8) 8)
-
yeah! cool! I'll test all this asap!
8)
In the attachement I put also version TWE 2.00 which is the last one ment to work on 68k Macs too...
cheers
raphael
-
Did you try everything with that Floppy? - Different floppy readers and some repair apps?
Me, I just wish I could revive my copy of Digital Performer 1.4Y that came with the CBX: My authorization diskette is dead...
good luck,
Pierre
[/quote]
-
Oh yes!
I ran out of installs, of which there are three (I got it used, so there was one already used), and then my attempts to revive it made it die entirely. I could not even use it "live" in the disk drive to authorize an already installed version to run. Thy used a pretty tough protection scheme...
Pierre
-
I guess you tried to contact MOTU ?!?
-
MOTU endorses a strict proof of ownership policy before they give you something.
Since I got DP 1.4Y "used" when I bought my used CBX and never proceeded with a transfer of ownership with the previous owner, I was denied assistance...
Pierre
-
they should allow their manufactured products to be used effectively otherwise they are contributing to E-Waste unneccessarily..
support the people who have their hands on your products.. people die. property is passed on to next generations.
obviously it was paid for at some point otherwise we wouldnt have it in our hands.. we didnt exactly break into MOTU HQ and rip them off for a 20 year old interface
its really foolish their policy - they need to make the support materials public
-
Actually MOTU is probably the best company as far keeping their old "stuff" usable.
I recently got an 828 MKII (circa 2004) working on El Capitan since they do an amazing job updating drivers/software; that is why other manufacturer's interfaces in the same era go for less that $20 on ebay and MOTU stuff kinda holds some resale value.
There are dozens of other really expensive interfaces that peak out at Mountain Lion or Lower which really sucks for some :(
Most companies say "sorry, your excellent, really expensive interface, is not worth our time to re-write some drivers... but we have this new _____, oh yeah, it's thunderbolt, so just replace the entire computer, OS, and DAW software while your at it and you can be current, oh, thanks for the call, did I answer all your questions ? survey to follow "
-
is there a cracked version of motu y for cbx d3?
-
i never tried this one....
-
niceeee
-
Will this work with the CBX-D5???
that would be awesome!

AUDIO HARDWARE
MOTU have taken a conscious decision to support the higher end of the direct-to-disk/digital audio market, and so Digital
Performer v1.7 does not support the rather limited audio facilities (and nasty connectors!) offered by Apple's Sound Manager
3.0 and upwards, nor does it support the Yamaha CBX hardware that the special version 1.41Y did . Instead, MOTU now
concentrate exclusively on Digidesign hardware, from the simple plug-in cards of Audiomedia II (NuBus) and III (PCI), via what was once Session 8 and is now called Pro Tools Project, through to the fully professional and comprehensibly expandable Pro Tools III systems. Supporting just one manufacturer's equipment pays dividends in consistency and simplicity, and makes setting up much easier for the end user.
The review setup was based upon a low-end Pro Tools system, giving 4-voice polyphony and eight audio inputs/outputs.
(There is more information on Digidesign systems in this month's Apple Notes column; see pages 122/3.)
you are looking for 1.41Y
-
I already have DP 1.41Y. lost all my installs, can't do anything with it. I know I could use Logic (and Cubase Audio it seems) but I'm not familiar with either and I have no desire whatsoever to learn yet another DAW.
The impression was given that DP 1.7 would work. I guess I'll just give up on the CBX-D5.

lost installs? did you kryoflux, applesauce or greazeweasle the auth floppy before you installed?
if you got a cbx-d5 for sale in europe, i just missed buying one for 40 eurs. and im pretty upset about it :D
-
"did you kryoflux, applesauce or greazeweasle the auth floppy before you installed?"
WTF are these things???
Did they exist twenty years ago when I did that install?
I doubt...
My CBX could be for sale, but it's in Canada.

No, but you did miss a lot of netiquette lessons, that's fur sure.

Put it up somewhere, like Filebin net or similar, I might take a look.
P.S. Have you ever used tools like ResEdit, ResCompare, Resourcerer and MacsBug? ;)

Yes I have used those in the past.
The installer is fine, but the software won't run because the authorization diskette has no more authorizations. to boot (!) it is also corrupt.. I wouldn't be able to post it as I can't even read it!
-
I ment DP 1.41Y software, not authorizer. Is it ok? Can you install it? Can you run it up to the point where it asks for authorization?
-
with macsbug installed, that is.
he is going to show you how to run it without the floppy key.

OK. give me some time to dig this up. I will have to setup a proper OS9 machine: the machines I currently use have no floppy drive.
I do have the original install diskettes, but I also have an installed version on one Mac or more here, which I'll have to resurrect.

after discovering this lengthy awsome thread, i guess this thread is a re-run for IIO. (didnt know IIO is a skilled programmer, i just thought hes good at taking stabs at my "museum" ;))
For the first time, Yamaha have dispensed completely with in-house software development (which had not met with much success on Yamaha's C1 computer) and opted to concentrate on its hardware/firmware skills, whilst bringing in high-profile third-party software vendors to implement D5 support via existing successful products. Currently, the line of development is aimed firmly at the hi-tech musician, and therefore Mark Of The Unicorn (Digital Performer) and Steinberg (Cubase Audio) are under contract to provide D5 support for Macintosh and Atari respectively. Support for the PC is also under negotiation. At present, Steinberg and MOTU have one-year exclusivity over D5 dual audio-MIDI music recording applications on their respective platforms, but after that period the D5 will be open to support by all software manufacturers; this should ensure support by at least Opcode StudioVision, Cubase Audio for the Mac, and whatever C-Lab have up their sleeve.

Oh my god
My favourite ny hardcore band of the 90s
And my saviour in terms of 90s cracks
I will listen to the entire lookingglassself record in honor of the man
In the jap manual of cbxd3 there was a digital performer remark
Is there code for d3?
Someone with a d5 please test im hunting for a d5
-
I'll certainly do that. The CBX is still in the basement, but I unearthed the Quadra to experiment with the digidesign cards and interfaces. I only have to find time now...
https://filebin.net/2h1dmp2u2yjjbcff
Anyway, before diving any deeper, here's an interesting first tidbit. Apparently, DP1.71 has some CBX D5 resources in it.
Try to install it and see if it works. Maybe there's no need to waste time with 1.41.
Install 1.7 -> apply 1.71 update -> apply patch.
I had a good laugh seeing this after so many years :D

Logic Audio 2.6 manual:
1.2 Additional Hardware
In order to run LOGIC Audio you need additional hardware with analog/ digital and digital/analog converters (A/D and D/A) and if necessary also digital signal processors (DSPs). This hardware can either come in the form of a card for the Macintosh’s internal Nu-Bus or PCI-Bus, or as a free-standing hardware unit. In this manual it will be referred to as HDR hardware (Hard Disk Recording hardware).
At the moment, LOGIC Audio supports the following hardware:
• AV - the internal converters in the Power Macs (or 68k AV models)
• DAE - Digidesign’s AudioMedia II and III, Sound Tools, or Session 8 or ProTools II
• TDM - Digidesign’s ProTools III (and ProTools IV, as soon as available)
• CBX - Yamaha’s CBX-D5 or CBX-D3
The CBX-Extension
The CBX extension allows LOGIC Audio to make use of Yamaha’s CBX- D5 and CBX-D3. These devices are separate hardware units which make it possible to run LOGIC Audio’s hard disk recording functions in professional quality even on Macs without NuBus or PCI slots.
Running LOGIC Audio with CBX hardware is a little more complicated than running it with DAE hardware. As a result, the CBX Extension must be used when using CBX hardware in conjunction with LOGIC Audio.

CBX extension:
I vaguely remember I have been chasing this one at the time. I may have it somewhere, I'll look (eventually). I did consider using Logic for driving the CBX, but have been put off by its complexity.
-
wait what thats by emagic for LA2.6? nu uh :D
because i was just checking my logic audio 2.5 plastic box and all i could find was DAE extension floppies
-
This is NOT the infamous logic "CBX extension". It is a system extension for Sound Manager so it can use the CBX as a sound I/O

Logic Audio 2.5.3 "Announced"
Logic Audio v2.5 for Windows 95 entered the market in summer 1996, and the latest version (2.5.3) costs £399. [...] Logic Audio does not yet support any of them, but I am assured that Emagic are in the process of developing extensions for CBX, Soundscape and the Akai DR8.

LOGIC Audio 2.6 "CBX Extension released"
LOGIC Audio CBX Extension for Mac OS
Yamaha's CBX-D3 and CBX-D5 Support for LOGIC Audio Mac OS
The CBX Extension is designed to get the most from LOGIC Audio Mac OS with Yamaha's CBX-D3 and D5 Digital Recording Processors. Connect up to 2 CBX units to even medium powered SCSI-equipped Macs for a total of CBX eight audio tracks and use any combination of CBX units for maximum flexibility. The CBX Extension can be used in conjunction with other LOGIC Audio Extensions to allow you to easily customise your digital audio system.
Record and play up to eight tracks of professional quality digital audio (4 per linked CBX unit) using a wide range of Macintosh models from Performas to Powerbooks; the CBX processes the audio data internally while its CPU accesses your harddrive, leaving your Macintosh to run LOGIC Audio at maximum speed. This is a great advantage for those who don't have access to a high-end Mac but want to enter the world of high quality digital multitrack effectively and economically. For those already using other audio hardware - for instance, Digidesign's Audiomedia or Session 8 - or even Macintosh's Sound Manager 3.0 and the computer's 16-bit audio in/outs (AV), the CBX-D3 and D5 from Yamaha represents a truly flexible method of expanding your existing system. Of course, all the power utilities of the Digital Factory can be used regardless of your choice of hardware.
The CBX Extension can be used alongside LOGIC Audio 2.6's built-in AV or DAE support simultaneously; simply choose the Output Device from a convenient menu. All audio files recorded within LOGIC Audio are 100% compatible and can be freely exchanged. As when using other hardware options, LOGIC Audio automatically scans your system and creates the appropriate control surface for the CBX using its unique Universal Audio Object. Current LOGIC Audio owners will appreciate the familiarity offered by this level of integration, while new users will appreciate the transparent setup procedures and smooth learning curve.

Logic Audio Platinum version 3.1 is Emagic's "top of the line" professional recording solution, one that has gained critical international acclaim for it's highly musical real-time editing, unsurpassed timing at 960 PPQ, seamless integration of audio and MIDI, user configureabilty and overall flexibility. Logic Audio Platinum supports the following dedicated hardware right out of the box: All of Digidesign's current DAE-supported hardware including ProTools III/24 TDM systems, the Korg 1212 I/O, Audiowerk8, Apple Sound Manager, any Windows95 compatible soundcard, Yamaha CBX series, Akai DR8/16 and Soundscape SSHDR-1 (note: some of these hardware systems are platform specific).

Gute Nachrichten!

CBX extension:
I vaguely remember I have been chasing this one at the time. I may have it somewhere, I'll look (eventually). I did consider using Logic for driving the CBX, but have been put off by its compexity.
No luck, I have searched in many possible places, no trace of that thing.
-
i'll put it on my list of unicorns along cubase tdm 4.1
ive already found one impossible to find program which only 1 copy existed of :D the dev gave it to me
everything is possible
-
I do own that Logic 2.5 extension floppy disc. But the thing has not more autorizations left. (those autorizations were copied on hdd and were lost if not copied back onto the floppy. This is what happened before I bought that stuff second hand )
If you guys want to try to hack it somehow, I could send it to you.
I do understand that this extension and so CBX support was integrated into Logic from version 4.0 on ?!?
-
What does "infamous logic "CBX extension" is supposed to do? Am I missing something?
that infamous thing, that was expensive and that very few people ever saw, gave you the resources to use the CBX-D5 with Logic Audio. Smilesdavis quotes a pretty good description five posts away...
-
expensive? from memory or did you see a price sheet recently? id love to see that
-
It's just from memory. Was at least $100. Maybe Cyberish knows, he has that disk. We may suppose he bought it...

yea, also i hope he scans it for us, id love to see the label and it also helps people i asked to look for it identify it

dunno about price. got that extension floppies second hand.

amazing thanks for letting us take a peek at the LAM2.5 (1996) unicorn extensions.
cbx-d3 (1994) on its way to me. 25 eur. score.
-
dunno about price. got that extension floppies second hand.
I just rechecked: this CBX extension floppy is copy protected. On Mac OS X I can see that extension file to be installed by a VISE installer but it's not possible to copy it.
I tried to copy it with DiskDup but there's no avail. SmilesDavis told me to be able to Kyroflux it. Probably the last chance to safe these floppies for the future.
The floppy content actually also updates Logic 2.5 to 2.5.4 . - Do we have somewhere Logic 2.5 (not 2.5.1 etc.) ?
-
applesauce would be the best way imho to preserve it
i think 2.5 is in the anthology (but im not sure since im using the legit)
-
I have installed DP 1.71 and frobbed all my might on this, but there is no way the CBX-D5 responds to it. It works fine with the Digidesign hardware, but the CBX is a no-go.
Now I have a backlog of real work to do.
I'll certainly do that. The CBX is still in the basement, but I unearthed the Quadra to experiment with the digidesign cards and interfaces. I only have to find time now...

I also found a collection of message excerpts I had gathered on CompuServe (!) regarding the CBX...
i am currently doing research on google groups. what is this CompuServe please and how to access it, please?
-
Ha!
that betrays your tender young age my friend...
at the beginning of the internet, when we old farts used Macs 512 with dial-in modems and used diskettes, Compuserve was a site that hosted a plethora of different newsgroups of various interests. I went there to search and read threads regarding my interests, in this case digital audio (if such a group existed then) or maybe MIDI, etc.
Compuserve vanished forever maybe fifteen years ago. I doubt there's any archive of that.
Regarding "MixDown CBX-D5 Demo", I downloaded this package in 1999. It was, as the name says, a demo: some functions didn't work, and the authorization cost was high ($120 Australian dollars), so I didn't buy it. I don't know if the version that's pointed to is unlocked, I'll have to check that. I have now dismantled my historic setup cause I needed the space, so that won't be anytime soon.
-
I found it with google dunno if its unlocked or *can* be unlocked but its a step further
Compuserve i took a wiki dive and sadly it seems it isnt browseable to this day like google groups is
-
Probably someone familiar enough with MAX 3.5 could unlock it or recreate it. If I had too much free time I'd try to do something similar with MidiBASIC...
