Title: Can os9 run games from system 7, also hi everyone ^_^

Edit: PLEASE SEE BELOW PICTURES
THANKS ALL ^_^

I love this place!!! The community and your write ups have got me collecting Macs again.
I have a software question.
Can a modern os9 machine run an older 68k game like the old SSI goldbox games or Monopoly?
I understand there is a built in emulator starting with the PPC units,  but figured I'd ask the gurus on here.
Do I need to keep a system 7 machine for them ?

Hi Odinnson, welcome!

Had to smile when I read "modern OS9 machine" :-) ... you know it's 20+ years since OS9 was introduced? Boy, time sure flies by!

Regarding your question - Yes and no. A lot of games will work fine in OS9 too. It all depends on how well the programmers adhered to Apple's standards. If by Monopoly you mean the mid 90s CD-ROM, yes, it will work. (there had been plenty of Monopoly games for the Mac)

Now SSI games are another matter. Their sloppy Mac ports were often disappointing "DOSish" and I know that Panzer General / Allied General do not work. Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures does work, i had that briefly running at one point. About the others - no idea, sorry. If all you want is playing SSI games on a Mac, you might be better off getting a cheap Mac LC III.

Thanks for the reply!! I kinda badgered my post title lol but thank you.
The Dark Queen of Krynn specifically is what I wanted to run. Can I link a photo in a post?  I'll send a picture of what I got. It's the rare mac collection on cd.
Panzer General was another gem.

Ok so the requirements so Non PPC, but according to some basic surface level research... the 68k emulator built in to the PPC should be able to run these. Any further feedback is highly appreciated!!!

many will run.
but apply a bit more RAM in the "get info" window and watch out, some will ovewrite the game sprockets, quickdraw, quicktime and sound extension with older versions.

Oh yes, that's a great collection of RPG gems! Envy you! :-) But the box also shouts "give me your hours! ALL your free hours. For the next three month". Beware, adventurer, beware! :D

Do you already own a Macintosh that can run OS9?

Reason is that if you're wondering what machine to buy (not owning any yet) I would nonetheless advise you to get a 68k Macintosh. Because that is what these games were made for. Get a Mac LC of any kind, put System 7.1 on it and add some more RAM to it if you can + apply the advice IIO gave you above and you'll be good to go.

Hmm...maybe I should really boot up my Mac LC for some retro gaming action some time ...

Hehe thanks friends!

That collection usually goes for $50 give or take on Ebay. I have a Performa 6290CD I got WITH Apple CRT for $205 shipped in working great condition from Ebay. I used to play the daylights out of Dark Queen of Krynn back in the late 90s on my old Performa 405.

I'll take the advice of all and invest in a genuine 68k system. There are a few on Ebay right now that I am watching and will get over the next month or so.... to head the Great Diehard's advice  " watch out for the Mac bug" lol... IT IS REAL!!!!

I wanted to give you kind folks a followup. Firstly I lost my old login email so I simply made a new account.

Secondly I did in fact buy a Powerbook G3 Pismo that was fully upgraded with a msata ssd even. The thing works like a champ. I use it for Os9 only.

So I got every single one of those old games to run perfectly EXCEPT for the sound. Now the sound and speakers work just fine for general OS use and even for some of the old games like the old OLD Monopoly.
However nothing I do will get the sound to work or the music to work for any of the old AD&D SSI games.

Any tweaks I can do within Os9 to get that to work?  They do run a "bit" fast as well.... I'm trying to see how I can limit ram like IIO Kindly suggested.

Cheers everyone!! I freakin' love this place!
