Title: Does ATI Radeon 9000 Support Dual DVI Monitors in OS 9.2.2 & X?
Post by: snooktarpon on March 28, 2021, 06:05:28 AM
I have a G4 MDD FW400 with a ATI Radeon 9000.

I have 2 identical 1900x1200 DVI monitors that I would like to connect to the G4. I know you can get a rare ADC to DVI adapter to use the ADC port.

So if I get that adapter, can I have two 1900x1200 DVI monitors with the Radeon 9000 in OS 9.2.2 and OS X?

If not, what are the other options? I see there PC version of the ATI 9600 Pro with two DVI outputs. Will that work with OS 9.2.2 and X?

FYI, I do want to purchase a new graphics card with ADC and also purchase the ADC to DVI adapter. That will get too pricey IMO.

I think it should work, but is it worth it? If you can get a PC version of the Radeon 9000 Pro, which can easily be flashed if they are the ATI retail one that looks like this. They are found for like $50 and cheaper than these adapters, and this is for the 128 MB model.

Mac Elite has the ROM. You can flash the card on your Mac if you have a spare PCI card or using VNC on Mac OS X with Graphicellerator and moving both switches on the upper left-hand corner to SF. Of course, the Radeon 9000 Pro isn't the fastest card on Mac OS 9. It's the Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600 (which is rare) and the Radeon 8500 for ATi, which is also easy to flash, but uncommon. Anything from 9500 or higher does not work on Mac OS 9. The Geforce 4 Ti 4600 are flashable with the Ti Rom Maker, which can be found on this forum. However, flashing it requires a PC with an AGP slot. Also, finding a working PC version can be tricky as they are rare. I tried buying one, but I got a defective one and had to send that back. I ended up with a Mac version, but not a big deal since I'm not using two monitors as I have one big 1920x1200 display, which is enough.

i dont know by heart but i think yes; all AGP cards should support splitting and not only mirroring.

i do the same with my geforce 4 mx and it works like a charm. i paid 2,95 euro for my adapter. (only the other way round is expensive and rare!)

unfortunately there seems to be no GPU for PCI for MacOS9 which would be dual head, so for 4 monitors you needed a third card, haha.

The Geforce 3 cards are the ones that do not support dual displays. This is true with the early NVidia cards, but the ATi cards from the Radeon 7500 or later support dual displays on the same adapter. The Geforce 4 is the ones that started having multi monitor support. I wonder if my Radeon 7000 PCI on my Blue and White PowerMac G3 supports dual displays.

The limitation on dual monitor cards only apply to Old World ROM Macs, basically anything earlier than the PowerMac G3 Blue and White don't work with dual displays on the same adapter. This includes all the Pre-G3 Macs and the Beige PowerMac G3.

I ordered the "rare and pricey" ADC to DVI adapter. I just tried it out and I get both monitors working with the DVI monitor as the main monitor and the ADC monitor as the extended desktop. Dual monitors works in OS9.2 and Tiger. So I'm all set.  :)

Where did you find that adapter? I wouldn't mind having one around myself…

never worked for me. only shows mirroring in the controlpanel when i connect both DVI and VGA.

so i ended up using the AGP card for 2 monitors and the PCI card only for #3, which feels a bit stupid.

thanks for adding the info about G3 OS support. while it doesnt apply for the threadstarter, it is interesting and i am probably not the only one who didnt know that, since i never had a G3.

Yes it will work. I have a 9000 in my older DP500 G4 driving two 1920x1200 displays. Works fine in both OS. Just make sure you've got latest drivers.

However the 8500 doesn't have dual digital display support only DVI/VGA/NTSC/PAL/TV.
