Title: Looking for the right cheeze...
Post by: Ninester on April 16, 2018, 04:53:00 PM
But, I just cannot download..ever :'(

Public File Busy

The public file you are trying to download is busy due to extreme demand. This page will automatically attempt to access the requested file in one minute, or you can try again now.

Premium users never have to wait in line to get any public file, so sign up and sign in now and you won't ever have to wait again!

Premium users are permitted 1,000 simultaneous file downloads on files they share, while our Basic users are only allowed 10 concurrent downloads on shared files.

If any other member is having trouble downloading from our Adrive system, please post it here, I have not heard of any other issues but I want to log how many people are getting this or other errors

I get this Public File Busy thing too, started recently, didn't use to happen.

Also from dosdude1 a bit back:
Thanks for posting this! I've actually been after finding a copy of this for YEARS, and have had no sign of ever finding it until now. Unfortunately, though, I am unable to download from the provided ADrive link, it keeps throwing a "Public File Busy" error. Is there any possibility of uploading to a different server or file hosting site? I'm really looking forward to flashing my GeForce 4Ti 4200. Thanks!

(Holds hand up, reluctantly.) Yes, same problem here.

After a few weeks of this, finally "signed up" for free 30-day Premium User status with ADrive. Now, when I get the "Public File Busy" message. I then sign-in to ADrive using my temporary Premium User info and get immediate access/download.

*Also, before the "File Busy" screen, there is a very quick screen noting "File overlimit, please turn on javascript." message.

After massive work of organizing file structures and downloads... looks like I am searching for another storage provider
Title: Re: Looking for the right cheeze...

This is a real problem, Adrive is the only storage that works correctly via OS9, as all testing with MediaFire and other Online file storage systems, when setting "Folder Level" access with password protection,  unfortunately Mac OS 9, browsers do not show the downloads...

I will do a simple test with no password protection (removed), please tell me if anyone can access these files in an os 9 browser:
http://www.mediafire.com/folder/9ackaxawcwcr0/DAW_ASR_Images

Download the "readme.jpg" file since it is small or feel free to try a large file and let me know download speed

I have emailed them today with all the details... we will see if they are willing to fix it, on their "tech support ticket" that you fill out the Mac OS X goes up to Yosemite as the highest OS, that tells me they are probably hurting and getting clobbered the competition, maybe they will go out of business and we will have to move on :(

Classilla puts up a message on Mediafire that says the site uses "incompatible encryption algorithms"
If push comes to shove, we might be able to get Cameron to look into it - it may just be a missing cert.

Knez offered to host everything. While it would definitely be more stable that way, we would have to rely on him and his team and servers which would be out of our control. I'm not sure it's a good idea to have ourselves at the mercy of another site. I wonder if we could get our own server somehow, cheap, without anyone giving us crap for what we want to host.

In a way I almost wish this were the old days and we'd only be able to trade via snail mail floppy diskettes and CDRs  :P

if we used a private host we could allow only mac os 9 clients (such as HL 123.)

i see why i can become problematic, but what will definetly be nice is that it makes it really simple to make backups (== the one or other user might just want to download everything)

dont know why i just have to think of bearshare ^^

My dear Syntho, we have been over this one about 1000 times, Knez has a big heart, but he is unable go give root FTP access to MacOS9lives, so I am unable to manage the directory tree, yes, he will mirror, but we won't have a dedicated server and I can't make changes, he has other partners, I believe, that limit his benevolence.

If he's got a server and can host the entirety of the Macintosh Garden, plus offer to host other sites, why can't we get our own? I'm not sure what his setup is and how much it costs but maybe we can ask him and see what kind of a deal we can get for ourselves.

I can now, though. New server infrastructure. You could have a Mac OS 9 Lives virtual machine in our server cluster that you can manage however you'd like. Running Windows or Linux or whatever. Just contact me if it's of any interest.

I don't want to go into detail on how the infrastructure looks, but generally speaking it's a couple of physical servers used to create a cluster for virtual machines. All in all I think we'v invested $1k USD in server hardware so far (got parts very cheaply) and running costs are around $200 USD per month. This is just out of our own pockets because we are passionate for old Mac software and the Mac community.

I don't know what running costs you would be looking at in the US, but the starting investment would be around the same number if you want something that can take the load.

dedicated servers start at USD 30 - but that is without traffic.

Knez has been kind enough to to put this all in motion.  We will have root access to our own server !  It will be easy to bounce the directory structure from Adrive to Knezdrive via FTP, but relinking the boards is going to suck....again.  at any-rate, we will begin the transition as soon as Knez gives up the green light.

Personally, I don’t care how attractive Knez or even DieHard, might actually be.
(Mr. Happy does look pretty good in those jeans, though.):o Breathing extended
existence of this site onwards and into the future is quite an important resource
for those either recently re-discovering… or those that have been here all along.

the technologies are all still compatible -
its entirely in the web developer's implementation whether or not its compatible with mac os 9..
and the stupid bloated javascript libraries the developers use

i mean to say, its possible for you to design a file downloading system that is customizable
+ tailored to your needs + compatible with mac os 9.

perhaps instead of testing each + evert file sharing service
(such as you have tried to do both then (years ago) and now..)
maybe u could switch the focus to researching any opensource php applications
for tracking downloads, requiring passwords etc
a great place to start would be to brainstorm all the needed functionality
the site needs to effectively distribute files + report non working downloads etc

a drive originally had quite a few well-liked features that u should perhaps document here
to use as criteria in its replacement

Yes, but that was where Adrive shined, it supported FTP and was OS9 browser friendly, I do not have the time to dedicate to that :(

Yes... spot on, I have looked into that also, but NOT recently; GoDaddy itself gives me "unlimited space" on my multi-site hosting plan, but as you remember it constantly checks for "file repository" violations that are against the terms of service; so you get unlimited storage as long as you don't plan to store things; the unlimited storage is for SQL data bases and PHP code... NO backups... NO File storing :(

Yes... and Knez plans to whip up a server, but again, Adrive was great for newbies, no FTP knowledge, no need to torrent, no Hotline client, I fear we will need a front end Like the garden or something similar

Yes... haven't found anything close yet :(

Done with testing, done with worrying, we will be putting our faith in good hands with Knez :)

Adrive will only be around until everything is transferred,  I will be including a link on each download for anyone that wants to donate to Knez for his kindness in keeping Mac OS 9 files still online and find there way here in the future

There was a shit ton of stuff uploaded over time that hasn't been posted yet. On top of transferring everything to a new server, can we also - pretty please - have some sort of new moderator/admin that can sort through uploads and post them? We had a goldmine at one time but it was lost. Maybe Knez grabbed it off the FTP before it went POOF?

Speaking for file server wows, I had built SpecViewPerf for OS X, as from time to time I like to check and see if any Quadro/FireGL features have ever been unlocked in the Mac drivers.

I uploaded it to my Google Drive, and now it seem to be gone?

I don't know what to make of it, maybe it's still there and I'm just not seeing it, or Google just took it down thinking it was a form of copyright violation, and it may have been, I never read the license.

However it's a real pain in my ass next time I want to run it, as the patch I used to port it was only reachable in the wayback machine, and it would only build in 10.4 or below.

I had to setup a build env on 10.4 in VirtualBox, and that was a real pain too.

I'd really like to get DVD SP for OS 9 off the ADrive, but I too just get the file busy.

ADrive lets you put your stuff up, then wants to charge everyone to download it.

Do the 30-day, no-cost, introductory “join-up” with ADrive
to get what you want/need… while you can.

As for off-site storage of anything (freakin’ Cloud stuff too)… it’s a pain,
but on-site archival storage is the best, safest bet. (We all know this, just
don’t like the harsh-reality admission.)

Kill off OS 9, murder the Power PC chip. Switch to Intel and now
change it again… but we just keep paying for the new technology
and throw away the supposed, previous disposable incarnations?

Well, maybe some of us. Apple Care(s).
Keep trying to push-upgrade my iPhone to iOS 11 point-whatever
and I'll just keep throwing that away before it can install. A better
mouse trap for "better" mice?

Train keeps moving, you pays mo money.
Nothing personal mind you, only business.

Re-invent the freakin’ wheel and then sell it back to them again.

There was a shit ton of stuff uploaded over time that hasn't been posted yet.

i feel the same sometimes... but my 25 years of experience with this issue is that too much democracy quickly ends up in a total chaos.

so i would leave it like it is and let only DH and MT decide what belongs to the "official" downloads and what not.

p.s. (of course we have two new additions on the to do list, which is graphics/video apps and freeware.)

There was a shit ton of stuff uploaded over time that hasn't been posted yet.
Well, that was the problem... it was a ton of SHIT... basically folders with no screenshots, no explanations, and tons of Warez ZIP archives.  There were a few exceptions like Enabler who had everything organized and ready to post, you also made an effort (so you know how hard it is) and I got the PT stuff that you organized up :) .

Since you have FTP access if there are any "gems" we should add, please create new folders and provide the usual DieHard requirements: 1 Upload per folder (can be more than 1 file if it includes updates, directions and other info for the same app/plugin), a screenshot, and a detailed description with version number, SN#, and functionality.

On top of transferring everything to a new server, can we also - pretty please - have some sort of new moderator/admin that can sort through uploads and post them?
Yes, please get started...thanks in advance :)

Maybe Knez grabbed it off the FTP before it went POOF?
Knez had a mirror, I have old backups, so maybe we can make a "sort thru" folder and dump it all, there are a few variables, some members did NOT want everything to go public (so I wish they did not upload those particular items), so that has to be respected and figured out also :(

A special thanks from myself and the entire Forum to Pixlgeek (who runs the US mirror for Macintosh Garden mirror.macintosharchive.org); he has setup a brand new area for our downloads !

Knez gets off the hook, since he is a busy man anyway.  I will be diving in and FTPing may ass off in the very near Future.

Finally we can say "so long" to Adrive and get the critical stuff over to our new location.

This is a total act of kindness from an exceptional person that actually has a mission statement to keep this rare stuff available to all

that is one good place.

since for us it is the original location, we should somehow have a backup, too, someday (i.e. we should not leave all that work to 2 persons only. the one folder one thing rule is essential here, so that 4-5 of us can easily download the folders with the text and pics directly from the ftp.)

OK, it's official...  I am moving files to our new download server.

Please PM me if you need something moved from Adrive due to a "File Busy" message and I will move what you need ASAP.

The process will take a while (maybe a few weeks), but I can prioritize needed files first :)

AND to also offer our thanks to DieHard, Knezzen, Pixlgeek (and a host of others)*

*But especially DieHard, for continuing to put up with us all AND for the arduous,

Thanks, many of the Directory trees and organization was from MacTron's hard efforts, we will be moving additional "Vault" material to the public, now that more of the original publishers are out of business

OK, it's Official, Adrive is now a Memory... I will be terminating the OS9 Lives subscription by July 1st.  It is completely empty.

Downloading and re-uploading had been a daunting task, but 80% of our stuff in re-linked, tested, and the download speeds are faster than ever !

No more "file busy" errors :)

I will fix what is left on a basis of "need", so please open a Moderator report or PM me for each item needed; I am taking a break on the mass fixes and will do the rest a little at a time
