Title: Have an ATI 9000 Mac Edition and ViewSonic P815 with blue tint
Post by: wnlewis on January 18, 2018, 04:40:00 PM
I have a G4 AGP Mac running 10.4.11 with a 1 GHz processor and an ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Edition card. A ViewSonic P815 is connected via the DVI port on the 9000 card through a DVI to VGA adapter. Recently the red disappeared.

The 9000 drives an ACER H236HL with good color. The Acer connects with a DVI plug.

I can run the ViewSonic off an HP Desktop out of the VGA port on the HP. And the ViewSonic displays the correct colors.

Therefore, I have to believe that it is the DVI to VGA adapter (which is a rather cheap adapter) that has failed.

If that is the case, then a DVI plug and cable going to the 5 ports on the back of the ViewSonic, RGB plus horizontal and vertical hold, might just be the ticket.

Anyone know where I could get such a cable?

Thanks,

wnlewis

Try search... DVI to 5 RCA BNC cable.

You can get one in many places. Google "DVI to RGBHV"
However, I think you'll find those are as much as twice as expensive as a DVI to VGA.
There's just lots more hardware and cable involved.
RGBHV is a very old analog display standard that goes back to CRTs, video projectors and such.
Stick with the DVI to VGA. Just because you got one bad one doesn't mean they all are.

I recently discovered that a direct VGA to DVI cable performed surprisingly well on the VGA output of a Mac Cube at 1920x1200 to an Eizo CGW243, which has only DVI inputs.
So I tried the same on my G3 B/W that doesn't send this resolution over DVI with an adapter and the monitor synced, but with noticable blur.
Your case is the reverse connection, but the same rules apply (the lost color is a worn/broken connection obviously).
High screen resolutions have a lot of bandwidth, so cable/connection quality really matters.
You may also try the VGA output of the card with a quality cable - just get a bunch from dumpster or recycling sources.

I checked with Liberty Wire & Cable. They make exactly the item I need: DVI/A-5BNCF-3 for $28.32 and shipping. So, I will plan to buy that and give it a try. Like I said the monitor works perfectly well on the VGA output from the HP desktop. That's using the VGA cable from the monitor into the VGA output of the HP. The display for the HP works fine with a DVI cable going into the 9000 card in the G4. So the only component that could be messed up is the adapter that goes from the 9000 card to the VGA cable. And that adapter was very cheap. So the 3 foot DVI to BNC cable should work fine.
