Title: steinberg midex 8 (2001) drivers
Post by: vectrex on July 23, 2014, 09:22:50 AM
hello all,

looking for the Midex 8 drivers as the ones hosted on the steinberg ftp don't seem to work, not sure if the vise installer is corrupt or what:

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Archives/Hardware//Midex_8//Mac//

thanks!

its possible that its zipped/stuffed with a stuffit version higher then yours?
are you using stuffit expander 6.0 that came with os9?
if so upgrade your stuffit expander

it extracted ok for me.. i just tried it
this info was inside the readme

MIDEX 8

Dear Steinberg-User,
in order to use the Midex 8 you have to install
OMS before you even connect the device to your Macintosh!
After a reboot of the system you should install
the Midex 8 driver first by doubleclick on the
Vise-Installer and than do a second systemreboot,
before you setup you OMS-Studio.
OMS is also required, even if you dont use Cubase
or Nuendo, which supports LTB.
You will find the Cubase-Updates and the
Nuendo-Updates (for LTB) on
http://www.steinberg.net and on http://www.nuendo.com

If you have an older Midex 8 (Version 0.92) driver
installed, please be aware to delete
MidexFWloaderDriver and the MidexMididriver-debug
from you Systemextention-folder. As well as
the Midex OMS Driver from your OMS-folder
in the Systemfolder!

The new 1.02 driver is especially needed
for the new hardware-revision R2.
A new firmwareloader will be installed to
the systemfolder into the control panels.

The OMS installation is started by just
double clicking on the installer icon in
this folder. After
installation you will find more documentation
 on your harddisk.

The OMS installer is provided courtesy of
Opcode System Inc.

OMS © Opcode System Inc / Portions ©
Steinberg Media Technologies AG

it seems this installer file is damaged.. probably
because they packaged it into a zip file
which would have destroyed the resource fork
type creator code to launch properly in mac os 9
this file has to be repaired somehow to execute i believe
it just need the proper creator code for a VISE installer

ok i just tried to use filetyper to change it to a vise installer creator type
(creator code: "VIS3" type: "APPL")
and it appeared to run, but then error'ed out with a msg saying that the location isnt available for install - WAIT that probably happened coz i ran it on my fileserver LOL

this file is definately damaged by the staff of steinberg
u need to contact them and let them know the file is damaged..
anyone else care to take a crack at getting the installer to work again?
its been damaged by being placed inside a zip file
they should have used stuffit;(

seems like a nightmare to get a hold of anyone there and i am skeptical of their willingness to give me support on this considering its now listed as an unsupported device. i made a post to the german steinberg forum where someone inquired about the same thing, no responses yet.

i think u would have more luck asking for help here to repair this file somehow from someone who knows the tricks
like mactron or dr bu
or asking on the macintoshgarden forum aswell and posting a link to the installer and explaining that the file has been packaged incorrectly in a zip and its resource fork + Creator code is damaged..
i got it to run but i think the code i used was wrong thats why the errors.

perhaps it isnt a VISE installer.. maybe theres another type of installer that it could be and if u could chance the creator code with filetype http://www.frederikseiffert.de/filetype/ (http://www.frederikseiffert.de/filetype/media/screenshot1.gif)

it may be that it can run + work

it does say this:
Installer VISE 7.1.1
© MindVision Software 1991-2001
InstallerVISE 7.1.1

in the file info when i do a cmd-i from snow leopard so it must be  VISE installer

maybe theres a way to repair the file by opening it with the file that creates the installers ?

im pleased to report i have solved the problem;)
i solved this by using "unarchiver utility" to extract the file on mac os x snow leopard
and then transfered the file to my fileserver and to my os9 machine where i tested and the application ran!

see! sometimes the answer is just in how u approach..theres many subtle differences in versions of software on which version of os...
or perhaps u emailed steinberg and they fixed the archive?? (doubtful! ha!) if it wasnt repaired by steinberg, then its just another example of how stuffit can screw up... and whats really bad about the way it screws up when it does, is that it doesnt even tell u that there wasn an error expanding the files, but there must have been? because extracted with this "archive utility" its fine? maybe hte only explanation is how this file was created.. the zip file.. must have been made on osx..which would be why it worked to extract on osx.. but not on os9..strange!

either way,
download the file attached to this message + run!

everything extracted fine via the options you provided but ultimately i was not able to get the device properly detected by OMS. OMS doesn’t read/detect the driver file provided, the other driver devices are scanned, but the midex doesn’t show up in the setup process...

dont give up easy
have u consulted the documentation
ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Archives/Hardware/Midex_8/Midex8OperationManual.pdf

To be able to use MIDEX-8, you need:
• An Apple Computer that is equipped with USB connectors, e.g. the iMacs, G3/
G4 Power Books or G3/G4 desktop computers. Furthermore you need Mac OS
8.6 (or higher).
• At the time of writing of this manual, Mac OS X compatible drivers were not yet
available. If you use Mac OS X, please check out www.steinberg.net, from where
you can download the driver software as soon as it becomes available.
• OMS version 2.3.8 or a newer version.
• If you use a PCI card that provides the USB ports, you will also need a Mac OS
that supports your USB PCI card.

Not all USB cards available for retrofitting do function well in all Macintosh
computers. We have not experienced problems with cards manufactured
by Sonnet.

To be able to use MIDEX-8, you must have installed and activated OMS
version 2.3.8 or higher on your computer. Older OMS versions do not suf-
ficiently support USB interfaces

make sure u have appletalk disabled ..
you may have some other conflict stopping it from being able to work properly

make sure it gets enough power. the midex-8 for example will not run usb-powered when connected to an apple keyboard. if you use an unpowered usb hub, try removing the other devices from the hub and see if it makes a difference.

maybe try another usb cable + different usb port
maybe try googling "oms conflict extension" for some info ?
i was hoping to get a successfull report back about the midex 8 usbmidi
