Title: Powerbook 5,1 (a1013) acquires IP address but does not connect to internet
Post by: A Noob and His Macintosh on November 09, 2019, 11:31:06 AM
Hey all, the title pretty much says it. So far, my experience with Mac OS 9.2.2 has been nothing short of fantastic save for the severe issue of networking. Under TCP/IP settings (Yes, Appletalk is disabled along with all the other hints given), it's clear the device is getting everything allocated to it with no troubles through DHCP but when I attempt to launch my browser, I'm stopped by the dreaded "website could not be found, please check the name and try again" error after a few seconds trying to resolve the host.

I'm sure it's something silly but I feel like I've tried everything I can and am at a total loss here. If someone could help me with this I would absolutely appreciate it. I'd love to take this device on the go with me, but without network connectivity I just can't see a good reason to.

P.S apologies if I've posted in the wrong board

whats the ip address of your router? do you know? : I'm the one that set up the network so I'd hope I know  ;D

This machine does not support OS9 ordinarily, so some things may not work.

How far can you ping?
Machine itself? Router LAN side? Router WAN side?

I use OTTool for pinging.

Whilst the machine doesn't support OS9, there's a thread with proven success on this exact model which also shows network functionality.
Using that tool, a traditional traceroute to google.com ends with the error "Couldn't resolve address."
A ping pulls up the same error, never getting past the "Querying DNS" stage

if you have to you can always install a gigabit ethernet PCI card
although that would cost an expansion slot
but; you already said the built-in nic works fine in OSX so that is a waste;
(oops sorry i was thinking u were using an MDD, i see now its a powerbook! lol

if it was me, i would say something about your install is screwed up;
what source did u use to install os9?

any os9 powerbook users able to help this guy out?

The only source for this installation I've used is the one on this site

A ping pulls up the same error, never getting past the "Querying DNS" stage

You haven't indicated how far you can ping, so I'll assume it is just DNS that doesn't work.
Have you filled in the Name Server Addr field correctly?
You can put multiple entries in there - your ISP should be able to tell you what to put. You can add your router address too.

Apologies for the lack of detail. You're right, unfortunately DNS simply does not work.
The name server field is definitely correct as it's worked on my other devices though. I can't really see a scenario where a different name server provided by my ISP would be of much help but it is something I'll consider  ;D

There are also public DNS servers you can use.
I just trying OpenDNS right now (208.67.222.222) and it seems to work.

But until you complete the ping tests suggested, I'm guessing where the problem is.

ovalking is right on course with this;

you can add multiple naemservers so try it
add the one your isp suggests;
then add the public dns ips
and then add your router address last
and let us know how u get on

but he cant ping without a proper ip address;
if he has a 169.x.x.x ip address he cant ping anything

do u have any other macos9 machines at all? or is the powerbook the only one?

can u not boot into macosX and copy down the settings that the DHCP server provides OSX?
and then simply use those settings as the manual settings for os9?
