Not sure where you're located, but here's a good alternative in Texas. $75 gets a complete rebuild.

However the much better news concerning the possible "Austin Texas" source is that I heard back from Andy Cuffe ([email protected]), [if any may wish to contact him directly]. He went so far as to state that he could be offering members here a price reduction for his services.

what are the modern technical alternatives that fit technically with mdd electronics but are not restricted to the mdd form factor

you can use medium powerful ATX PSUs and build you own cable tree.

if you take the optical drives out there is plenty of space inside.
By the original power supply is a beast, continuously rated - designed to on all the time with a huge mains filter cap.
