I'm trying to set this up on my Quadra 800 (System7.5.3, 68040 overclocked to 40MHz, RAM maxxed at 132MB or something...) with this really mixed collection of Digidesign nubus hardware: AudioMedia II, SampleCell II (no TDM piggyback), Pro Tools Audio Card (no TDM), a DSP Farm (with TDM) and a 882 interface.

It works with the AudioMedia and SampleCell, but I wanted to try to switch the AudioMedia for the Audio Card (and 882) and of course also plug the DSP Farm in there. So using the terminology on this page, I want to upgrade my "Pro Tools with Audiomedia II" system to a partial "Pro Tools III" system.

http://archive.digidesign.com/support/compat/CompatSysNB.html

I think the audio card and 882 are OK (haven't really given it a complete test), but the DSP farm is being problematic. DigiTest says something like "this card can not be used in this system" when trying it without the TDM piggyback card. With it, the machine won't even boot, not even if I remove the SampleCell card. So either it's broken or requires way too much power, or maybe it's acting up because the TDM chain is not properly terminated? I don't have any cable or terminator for it...

If I'm really lucky, maybe it's just a software problem and there's an init missing, or maybe it's because this machine hasn't been "authorized" for TDM...

Or maybe I need a TDM master piggyback on the "Pro Tools Audio Card" (aka Disk I/O?) or on the SampleCell II, or both. Or maybe it doesn't like that I'm also missing the Bridge I/O card. I'm going to keep trying though :-).

HARDWARE & INSTALLATION

While Pro Tools 4 is Digidesign's flagship product, it's now available over a wide range of price points. The cheapest way in is to use it without any additional hardware, in 'PowerMix' mode. For this you need a PowerMac with at least 32Mb of RAM, taking advantage of the computer's internal 16-bit, 44.1kHz sound engine (see 'Hardware Options' box). To get all the features in the new software, however, you have to have a full-fledged Pro Tools III system, which consists of a Disk I/O card, a DSP Farm card, and an audio interface. You also need an external disk drive, dedicated to audio, which is hooked up to the Disk I/O card. Digidesign say that you must have Apple's System 7.5.3 or later to run the 4.0 software, but I had no trouble at all running it with System 7.5 on a 100MHz 601-based clone. The new software will not run on older Pro Tools '442' systems, nor on Audiomedia II cards

Heh, the main reason was of course that there was that oakbog guide for 3.4, and the software was so easily available... But yeah good point, thanks, I'll have to try some newer versions as well :-).

if u are doing any type of multicard config
always start out .. get it working with one card and try to add from there?
just a suggestion.. take all cards out but 1.. get a working install. then try new things frm there!
good luck
