Title: OSX - The Missing Link
Post by: Petros90 on October 29, 2021, 09:43:44 AM
Given that:

1) There is a Board "Model Specific Apple Restore CD/DVDs Disk Sets" which include model-specific OSX downloads in the Download Boards section;

2) There are multiple references to OSX scattered throughout this forum;

3) A bootable OSX partition allegedly increases the functionality of OS9;

I have so far failed to find any links to, or recommendations for, a path to install OSX, 10.4 Tiger (aka Holy Grail) on a Mac running the classic OS only, on this site.

Having downloaded several copies of OSX Tiger in various forms from sources various I have amassed a collection of coasters, contributing to the destruction of the ecosystem by wanton use of plastic, aluminium and electricity etcetera.

I've learned that there are upgrades, model-specific installs as well as universal installs and its not always possible to distinguish between them from the description or pic.
And that the best way to install OSX on your Mac is via OSX ... Doc Daneeka would approve.

I understand that all (-ish) the software downloads on this site are abandonware and that it is necessary to avoid conflict with "current" OS vendors.

I think what I'm saying, is that there are some of us coming from the Other End, as it were, and do not have a MDD or Quicksilver that came preinstalled with OSX in any of its incarnations and would just like to be pointed in the right direction.
I thought, in my ignorance, that downloading and installing OSX 10.4 would be as easy as Diehard's 9.2.2 - how wrong can one be.

If the only reliable course of action is to buy (shock horror) a DVD or set of CDs, this information could maybe be given, maybe, within the software download board, with examples of where to acquire and how much should be paid.*

Currently there are CD sets  and DVD installs of OSX versions on eBay e.g. this DVD for Tiger:

- around $200. Which is obviously far more than my G3 minitower is worth.
But is this a reasonable figure, if a decent ISO file is unobtainable?

*Tall order maybe, no-one gets paid for this.

Do NOT spend a dime !

There are (2) books of 200+ CDs/DVDs that Myself and MacTron never had the time to go thru and get on the site.  Many are early OSX Model specific installs, many are for propriety DAW setups like PowerCore, AKAI sample sets, Mac OS drivers & apps, yada, yada, yada.

Back in the day, Mactron and I spent many months... imaging, testing, and uploading; and of course, Mactron was in charge of "cracking" all the CDs with hardware copy protection (literal circular scoring, small divots on the factory CD, or overburned blocks beyond the normal CD boundry).

Chris was also a great help, and him and MacTron resurrected a complete version of the "ASR" (Apple Software Restore) that imaged hard drives successfully while preserving many copy protection schemes.

I will try to get some of the early OS X stuff (10.1 thru 10.4) imaged and uploaded since I do get many emails and messages for requests.  At this point, I think we can safely say that we can keep OS 9 alive and still throw early OS X stuff a bone since the resources seem to be incomplete out there in the wild of the internet.
