Hello - I have a PowerBook G3/333 (Bronze/Lombard), and am trying to connect to the Internet at home. I have a typical Comcast setup, where I'm using a wi-fi router that includes Ethernet ports on the back (where I connected one of those ports to the PowerBook).
I proceeded to follow the OS 9 Internet setup wizard, and created a profile for connecting on an Ethernet network. This ultimately led me to inputting settings on the TCP/IP control panel, and I figured I could enter the same settings as my MacBook Pro (running OS X) ...
So on the MBP, I went into System Preferences > Network > Advanced... > TCP/IP and viewed the info there. I also used Google to tell me the public IP address for this MacBook Pro. Using this info, I entered the same values in the PowerBook's TCP/IP control panel for IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address.
Unfortunately, after saving (and attempting to connect to the Internet), it's not working and I'm seeing these messages:
"Your router (192.168.0.1) is not on your subnet (73.185.158.0). You may not be able to communicate with devices on other subnets."
"Another device on your TCP/IP Internet, which has the physical address 84 16 F9 5E 5D 72, is currently using the same IP address. Your TCP/IP network interface has been shut down."
I tried editing the 'IP Address' field to give it slightly different number (changing the last digit), but that didn't work. I also tried removing everything in the 'Router address' field (since the wizard said I could leave it blank) and saved the form, but it didn't help either.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I assume it should be possible to use the Internet on this computer ... So any assistance or advice will be much appreciated!

It's been a long time since I've mucked around connecting to the internet in OS 9 and the machine I'm at right now won't even run OS 9 so I have no way of looking, but see if there isn't an option to use DHCP to configure TCP/IP and have your router assign your PowerBook an IP address.

In the TCP/IP Control panel set Configure: to 'using DHCP Server'.
That should be sufficient as long as your router offers DHCP (most likely).
It means your router will automatically assign an IP address to your Powerbook.
I always use a manual setup, but if you don't understand what the addresses mean, they you probably won't appreciate the benefits offered doing it manually.
You can't use the same IP address as your MacBook Pro. IP addresses on a network need to be unique. It helps ensure the right data goes to the right machine!

Thanks so much GorfTheChosen and ovalking for your replies! I definitely thought about trying one of those other 3 options, but didn't know which one to choose ...
So I just tried the 'DCHP Server' option, and it worked :) Basically I cleared out what I'd typed into the manual settings, selected 'DCHP Server' and saved the profile.
I then restarted the computer, launched the TCP/IP Control Panel and was happy to see that settings had been inputted there now ...
So then I launched Internet Explorer 5, and once I figured out I needed to go to a website without "s" in "https" (i.e. http://www.google.com/), then everything was good.

You can also try to download more modern browser that support https:

Thanks teroyk - that's a great idea! I didn't realize there was a modern browser option for Mac OS 9, but I just downloaded Classilla and it works great :)
