Post by: IIO on February 28, 2023, 01:59:31 AM
it seems to be difficult and labourios to find out for which wacoms there are OS9 drivers and for which ones not, is there an overview somewhere with all products supported?

From what I've seen, the last Wacom driver for OS9 is 4.78-2.
It advertises support for:
Intuos2 Series (XD)
Intuos Series (GD)
Graphire2 (ETA)
Graphire (ET)
ArtZ II Series (UD-II, UltraPad)
UD Series (including ArtZ)
ArtPad II (KT)
ArtPad
Cintiq 18SX (PL-800)
Cintiq 15X (PL-550)
PL 250, 300, 400, 500
PenPartner (FT)

For the older SD tablets, the last supported driver version is 4.60.

you are right, i could have looked into the driver softwares´ readme.

the artz 12x12 seems great for my application (music), but they are all pre-USB.

i´ve read that you can use these 1995 products just fine with OSX 10.14, but what about the other way round? newer boards fully or partially working under OS9?

I used a Keyspan USA-28X Serial to USB adapter with a UD-1212-R in OS 8.6 to OS 9.2.2. It worked fine.

it offers a higher resolution than midi.

the resolution is tied to the sequencer, i assume you mean drawing automation in general? thats a cool idea, honestly

you use those to generate "note on" and "controller" type of events with software which directly supports wacom.

the bigger boards have a resolution of 3840* and more for both the pixelsize and the pressure, and even some of the older models have 8-bit resolution for the pressure.

with some extra magic you could also make use of the tilt, then you have a 5-dimensional controller. :)

the only thing it cant do is polyphony, and it seems you need those 25-50 euro keyspan adapters.

The ArtZ and Intuos can read a stylus and a cursor simultaneously, which is like duophonic :)

aha, see these are the things i still need to learn. (plus things like "where to buy pens" and "can i also use newer pens with older boards" and this kind of stuff.)

though i doubt that the wacom drivers for max and kyma would support that, but it sounds like fun.

in the max object by dudas there is "device type", which offers "pen", "eraser" and "puck" beside other minor options.

is pen/eraser these two different pens?

The eraser is a switch on "back" of the stylus, if the pen is the "front". The stylus also has a side switch.
"Puck" is slang for cursor (the tool that sits flat on the tablet with a crosshairs to aim it and covered with buttons).
Intuos added more data like, "Pen ID" that can recognize several different styli although only read one at a time. So they could paint with different colors etc.

Wacom's pens use EMR (Electromagnetic Resonance) technology.
But only some EMR pens are compatible with the UD series tablets.
Usually, pens for Surface Pro 1/Pro 2 (or Penabled Tablet, Thinkpad X230T, etc.) have high chance of being compatible.

OK, I can confirm that a pen for Surface Pro 1/Pro 2 I bought (the black one) works with UD-1212-R + Keyspan USA 28X in OS 9.2.2.

Drivers in use are Keyspan V1.9, Wacom 4.7.8.
