Title: Paint
Post by: MelTupper on April 04, 2021, 04:41:50 PM
Can anyone recommend a good painting program to use in OS 9... better than Paint in AppleWorks, which is what I have now. Mainly looking for higher resolution in my creations, but other than that I love the simplicity of AppleWorks. Don't want to spend an arm and a leg. My G4 should be able to handle just about anything of the genre... hardware-wise. (Dual 133 Mhz 1Gb processors, Ti4600 graphics card, 1.5 Gb RAM). Thnx!

What do you like?

PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop LE, Corel Photo Paint, ... ?

And there was an incredible and professional program that was bought by Microsoft, and that they gave away for free about 10 years ago. It was Mac OS 9 only! Sadly I cannot remember the name and thus not look if it is still available at any Microsoft server. Does anybody remember?

Hi !

I think that you're talking about Microsoft Expression (https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/expression-33-370).

About Mac drawing software, there was one that was fine:  Deneba Canvas. I mainly used the 3.5 version but there are some more recent versions like 5 or 6. These versions were so more complex and heavy than the 3.5.
Just be carefull with the 3.5 version on MacOS > 7.6, there was a bug with the Appearance Manager that causes menus to be buggy. A fix was made available on top of 3.5.4 update on the form of 3.5.5.

Yes! You are right I had "Expression" in mind. And I was wrong, it was the Vectorgraphics program, not the pixel one. That would have been "MetaCreations Painter" instead. And yeah, Canvas! I am quite sure there are 20 more professional programs out there …
