Title: Tape Backup Software
Post by: MasterControl on February 03, 2015, 07:31:26 AM
I've got myself an SDLT I drive… But I need software to backup onto it!
The apps I've found that support it, are DeskTape v5.6/v5.7… And Retrospect 4.3 (which also needs an "Advanced Driver Kit")…

Does anybody have these? If yeah, are you willing to share?

Thanks~

think someone should have retrospect

I found Retrospect 4.0, but I can't find the v4.1 and v4.3 updates… or the Advanced Driver Kit…

I have Retrospect 5.1 but it is the Express version

Express doesn't work with Tape Drives :-\
On top of that, v5.1 doesn't work on Mac OS <9.

Hi there,
I just took a chance to use the "en cache" feature of Gewgle after searching for retrospect 4.3.  You can access the "rovicorp"  downloads that way and the links are still working.  There's no full 4.3 there but the client version is there (I've read somewhere that it "could" ? handle the Advanced Driver Kit... and the kit is there as well.)
Try the same or just use this link I guess: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Mm8fp4qPYpkJ:http://downloadcenter.rovicorp.com/enu/support/retrospect/archived.html%2Bretrospect+4.3&hl=fr-CA&gbv=2&&ct=clnk (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Mm8fp4qPYpkJ:http://downloadcenter.rovicorp.com/enu/support/retrospect/archived.html%2Bretrospect+4.3&hl=fr-CA&gbv=2&&ct=clnk)

/me hopes this is helpful

Oh yeah.. just want to add quickly that there seems to be a full 5.1 available in there as well (5.1.177...)

10-4
:)

OK, so...
I don't know why I mentionned the webcache thing.. you can just go to the site directly:
http://downloadcenter.rovicorp.com/enu/support/retrospect/archived.html (http://downloadcenter.rovicorp.com/enu/support/retrospect/archived.html)
the files are linked to dantz.com, but you can get them (I just went right-click on the links to select download. That worked fine.)

/me feels kind of dumb

Those are just updates to the ADK… and the 4.2 and 4.3 drivers…
It's not the 4.1/4.2/4.3 updates… (4.1 appears to be a prerequisite for .2 and .3).

Again, 5.x doesn't work on Mac OS <9.

Thanks for trying to help, though.

Hrrm.. crap.  I thought for a sec that the "updater" could be the full thing (like Roxio does a lot).  There's the client version in there.. but yeah without ADK no luck there.

Sorry about that :\

The client is for use with Retrospect server.
A dedicated server runs the Retrospect server version, and clients on a network can run the client version. The clients can then backup to the server via the Retrospect client version.

Neat, but not very useful without the Server version.

Just found my original factory Retrospect 4.1 Package (with emergency Bootable CD creation) and it says ..
Quote
CD-R, CD-RW, Zip, Jazz, Syquest, DVD-RAM, AND Magneto Optical

I am shocked it does not do Tape (as you stated)... I will look thru my archives and see if I have something for tape

Retrospect Express doesn't work with tape drives. Desktop and Server work with DAT, travan, 8mm tapes… But it won't do DLT (and some other formats, can't remember which ones) without the "Advanced Drive Kit".

Regardless, v4.1 isn't available anywhere, and is the minimum required to update to 4.2 or 4.3. Could you perhaps upload it somewhere, DieHard?

this looks like 5.x works on mac os 9..
graphics would seem to indicate so anyway

"<" means "less than".
"Mac OS <9" would mean "Mac OS less than 9"… So, 7.x and 8.x for example.

Go to macgarden grab that desktop 5 archive and read the manual. I think you need a scsi driver for your tape. If it is recognized by the system it is available what you are talking about is block transfer or the whole partition.

Is it to complicated to give a os version like 7.x or 8.x ?
Title: Re: Tape Backup Software

hes saying he needs retrospect 4.1 and that retrospect 5+ only works on mac os 9.0 and above
diehard said he had the cd.. and that he would upload it.. but did not.

but yes mastercontrol.. u arent exactly being verbose here
and you put little effort into communicating your needs.

probably why diehard has put little effort into helping you.
if u want something maybe u should ask nicely + communicate properly

Reading through the posts above, I've expressed exactly what I'm looking for, and not too demanding either.

I'm looking for Retrospect v4.1, and the v4.2/v4.3 updates.
I'm also looking for the "advanced driver kit" which enables the use of tapes that aren't DAT (such as DLT and AIT).

v5.0 supports DLT out of the box, but it needs Mac OS 9 as a minimum, and I have some apps that won't work under 9.

If it is not available have you thought about a different backup strategy. You could use what you got at hand. For example if you got a machine that can run os9 and up use the server and your drive on that machine and make your other machine a client. Thats what i would do if i cant have it all.

btw is the drive available and ready to use in your system? If so use a different backup program or just drag and drop i have done that before.

the software was offered by diehard
which is why he was trying to accept the offer.. diehard often gets distracted + takes   about 4 months to come thru on what he says he can do LOL
right Diehard??? bhahaha

Maybe he looked and didnt find the specific version. Doesnt seem anybody got it.

if it is not even on macgarden and they have a huge archive then its time to change the plan.

you wasted your time anyway .... its the express version. If he got the 4.0 might as well use it and stop crying about the updates until they show up somewhere or change the backup strategy.

Yeah, I just realized that... as he mentioned, it won't work with tape drives... well at least it's up for others that may use DVD-RAM, DC-RW, Zip, Jazz, etc. :)

didn't realize that it was express, it was an NFR copy (I just scanned box), I never opened it until today, lol

he thinks he can update from 4.1 to 4.2 + 4.3 and get the support he needs
he may be correct
if he can actualy find the updates!
Title: Re: Tape Backup Software

Thanks for the help DieHard.
Yeah, Express 4.1 can't do tape.... And can't be upgraded to full 4.1 or 4.2/4.3

Crazy that full 4.1 is impossible to find… In the meantime, I'm rebooting into an OS9 partition and using 5.0 from there. It's a clusterf•x, but it's working for now.

Aaaand then it looks like the archive is partly corrupt, or at least the "Retrospect 4.1A.img" file is.

Please advisor, reupload it BINed too. MediaFire eats the fork if you do not "compress" twice.

No you only Compress 1X by making an archive (SIT,BIN,IMG,etc.)

Then you "Encode" with MacBinary

Yes, it is a 2 step process, but it involves Compressing and then encoding, not compressing twice :)
