Did the Beige Mac's from the mid 90s use the same 30 pin floppy drive connection as PCs?

wow an IDE floppy?????
DIEHARD also says theres a drive by Imation called LS120 Superdisk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperDisk), that connects via IDE 40 pin connection (not floppy 30 pin ribbon connection)
and lets u use 1.44mb floppies aswell as 120mb "superdisks"
diehards graciously offered to test this.. as he has some of these drives..
i am Patiently waiting for diehard to test to see if these drives work with macs... i hope he can do this asap

after a suggestion by protoolsLe5guy i find that:
Question:
What Macintosh media does MacOpener support?
Answer:
MacOpener supports the following Macintosh Media:
HD 1.44 MB Floppies
Iomega Zip
Iomega Zip Plus
Iomega Jaz
Iomega Bernoulli
Imation SuperDisk
Castlewood ORB
CD ROMs
SyQuest SparQ
SyQuest SyJet
SyQuest EZ-135
SyQuest EZ Flyer
Magneto Optical Disks
Macintosh Hard Drives - up to 250 GB
Mac formatted early generation iPods
Macintosh (HFS) and Mac OS Extended (HFS+) disks
And most other SCSI, USB, IDE and Paralled Port devices
NOTE: MacOpener has not been tested with FireWire (except for iPod), FireWire/USB 2 Combo drives, DVD-RAM, RAID, or PCMCIA devices. New USB 2.0 and Firewire drives are not supported.
Using Macintosh Media
Simply insert any Macintosh 1.44 MB floppy disk, SyQuest cartridge, Mac OS Extended format (HFS+) disk, etc, and use it. You can even format Macintosh disks on your Windows PC. Conversions Plus is perfect for sharing "cross-platform files" such as graphics, publishing, audio, web and more.
To access a Mac disk, simply double-click on the drive icon that has the disk in it - just like you would for a PC disk. The Macintosh files will appear with the correct Macintosh file name and appropriate Windows icons.

so maybe i can backup my oms disk in my win3.11 pc..
or maybe i need win98+ for macopener

MacOpener has been discontinued from the DataViz product line as of March 11, 2007. Because of our current business direction, we were not able to update MacOpener in a timely manner to support many of the new USB, FireWire and other drive types - as well as Windows Vista. Therefore, we have made MacDrive from Mediafour available to our customers. MacDrive is a best-of-breed Macintosh disk mounting solution for Windows that supports the latest Windows operating systems, including Vista, as well as the latest Macintosh hard drives, CDs, DVDs, flash drives and more.

macopener discontinued? does this mean its freeware?
anyone know if theres an old mac opener for windows 3.1 or windows 95?
http://www.dataviz.com/news/press/pressreleases/Detail.html?id=15
this shows a press release from 1997... saying mac opener v3.0
so maybe v1 or v2 works with win95 + win3.1?
im trying to read mac 1.44mb floppies to get old copy of oms + Drivers off these disks
examinng the box in the pic i attached above of macopener we see a chart of the "competition" for macopenr
-dataviz macopener
-pacific micro mac-in-dos
-insignia macdisk
-software architects here& now
-hypro tech macaccess
all of these products apparently can be used to read mac 1.44mb floppy + format/write them aswell!

i may not be reading this right
http://n.ethz.ch/~heim/techtalk/mac-pc-networking.html
but this page mentions "DAVE" the networking utility...
i think this page is suggesting that u can share the physical drive from a pc and access it from a mac over the network?
and have it work to read the disk???
Best Tool for a Mac Minority
The Mac-based Dave uses the Mac's native TCP/IP and adds Windows' NetBIOS protocol to give the Mac the appropriate networking protocols to connect to a Windows 3.1, 95, or NT PC. Many Mac users will appreciate that Dave doesn't require any software installation on the PCs, so you can connect your Macs without the help of your IS staff.
But don't get too independent: configuring Dave requires details about the Windows networking configuration on the PCs you're working with. You'll likely need a PC pro's help. For those not comfortable with nitty-gritty networking, PC MacLAN is far easier to set up.
Dave's only significant design drawback is that it relies on PC Exchange's extension mapping to display icons of files across the network--this is unfortunate if you're using DOS Mounter 95, which we recommend over PC Exchange.
Dave also suffers from a limitation of the Mac OS's networking implementation: you can have only one active TCP/IP connection. If you are using Dave to connect to a PC and want to dial in to an Internet service provider, you'll have to disconnect from the network, change your TCP/IP control panel's configuration to a dial-up connection, restart your Mac, and then dial the Internet connection. Apple has said for several years that it will fix this problem but still hasn't done so.
Once you have Dave up and running, PC users will see Macs and Mac printers through the standard Windows Network Neighborhood interface and Macintosh users will see PC volumes through the Chooser.
could this be a way to read mac floppies on a mac without a floppy drive?
-
DAVE is a CIFS client for Mac OS. You can use it to mount Windows shares in Mac OS :)
-
DAVE is a CIFS client for Mac OS. You can use it to mount Windows shares in Mac OS :)
yes but will the mac read the mac disk while being inside a pc.. ?
as u know, the pc says the floppy is not formatted + prompts u to delete it..
do you have experience with this?
-
It won't. The PC must see the drive in order to make a share of it. You just make a regular share in Windows, and DAVE can connect to it in Mac OS.
So you do have to have a disk that the PC can see and read from. So no HFS formatted Mac floppy will work.
Just buy a USB floppy drive and all is fixed. It's what I would do if I didn't have my Quadra 800 with a working floppy drive.
-
my possible solutions:
A) use usb floppy drive
B) use macopener or macdrive
im trying to find the older versions of this macopener v2 or v3
its like 1mb.. it has to exist on the net somewhere;)
If anyone can find macopener 2.0 (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2017.0;attach=1485;image) or mac opener 3.0 please i'd love to hear from you.

Try this out ;D

since i opened a similar discussion over on macintoshgarden (http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/macopener-dataviz-windows-31-95-nt-reading-144mb-mac-formatted-floppies):
i was given this link from MikeTomTom @ macintoshgarden
http://www.macgeek.org/downloads/
http://www.macgeek.org/downloads/PC_Mac.zip <-- this is the one that contains the diskimg.exe
apparently a tool that can create .img files from mac formatted floppies, in DOS !!!!!!!!!!
according to miketomtom:
To copy Mac floppies to ".img" on a PC, the command is:
diskimg r 1440 c:\floppy-name.img
To write a .img file back to floppy the command is:
diskimg w 1440 c:\floppy-name.img
from the readme:
This zipfile contains tools needed to move files between your Windows PC and
Macintosh systems using floppy disks. Because some folks don't want to read
lots of "useless" details in docs, the basic procedure comes first, then an
explanation of why these tools are useful follows.
In addition to this ReadMe, the zipfile contains DISKIMG.EXE and pc_mac.img.
The DISKIMG program will create a Macintosh disk on a PC-formatted floppy; it
must be run from a DOS window under Windows 95 or NT.
On the PC side:
---------------
1. Open a DOS window and CD to the directory containing the pc_mac.img and
DISKIMG.EXE files.
2. Put a PC-formatted floppy in drive A. The floppy must have no bad
sectors. Any data on the disk will be wiped out by running DISKIMG.
3. Enter at the DOS command prompt: DISKIMG W 1440 pc_mac.img
4. Tons of status messages will scroll by as the disk is written to.
Upon completion, the floppy will be a Mac-formatted disk, and you won't
be able to browse it from DOS or Windows. Eject it.
On the Mac side:
----------------
1. Insert the floppy created on the PC.
2. To install Stuffit Expander, double-click on on the Stuffit Expander 401
Installer icon in the window opened from the floppy disk. Follow the
directions in the installer.
3. If you need to install PC Exchange (you probably don't; details below),
drag the appropriate PC Exchange (7.0 or 7.5) from the floppy window to
the Mac hard drive. Double-click on it to run the self-extractor.
A PC Exchange control panel will emerge from the .sea archive. Drag
it into the System:Control Panels: folder on the hard disk, and reboot
to make it active.
unfortunately i just tested it in ms-dos 6.22 and it is incompatible..
"This program cannot be run in DOS mode"
also incompatible with windows 3.11
when i click it in win311 the screen goes black and then returns as if i hadnt clicked it at all, does nothing.

found this old clipping from pc magazine september 1998
i think this "conversions plus" is a more robust package which includes macopener aswell but offers additional file converting capabilities for media.
so i guess
macOpener v3.0
ConversionsPlus v4.0
were current in september 1998

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Conversions-4-5-Plus-PC-CD-open-convert-files-word-spreadsheet-database-mounting-/360651410308?pt=US_Office_Business_Software&hash=item53f87fcb84
Mac disk mounting improved to handle the latest industry formats
The Mac mounting component of the product called MacOpener® version 4.0, now recognizes and handles Macintosh disks and media on the Windows 98 Desktop. The new Mac OS disk format for large volume media "Mac OS Extended Format" or "HFS+", is now supported.
Better handling of unreadable e-mail attachments
Also included in the Conversions Plus package, Attachment Opener version 2.0, has made some significant developments in recognizing e-mail attachments received over the Internet. Currently designed to open, view or print compressed and encoded attachments, support has been updated for additional types of encoded MIME file types.
True integration with Microsoft e-mail clients
When working within Microsoft Outlook 97/98, Outlook Express and Exchange, users no longer need to exit their mail program to view attachments they may be having difficulty opening. Users can automatically launch a WYSIWYG view of an unreadable attachment. Attachments can be viewed without even launching the programs that initially created the files.
Intuitive Macintosh co-existence and migration features
With an exciting new tool called Name Doctor, Conversions Plus aids in the process of migration from the Mac platform. With Name Doctor users can automatically rectify illegal characters or incorrect extensions for use on the PC.
Updated Converters
Included in version 4.5 is native support for Macintosh Microsoft Office 98. Conversions Plus users can now convert, view or print virtually any file they receive while using Office 97 or interacting with Office 98 users.
For Windows (32-bit Systems) [*Please review compatibility/platform sections]
so yea this confirms that macopener is part of this other app aswell

a few more solutions have been brought forward by "MikeTomTom" on macintoshgarden...
thank god for his help!!!!
-Mac-ette (ftp://nephtys.lip6.fr/pub/pc/garbo/pc/diskutil/macet30u.zip). a dos based app that reads mac disks and allows you to select which files u want to copy .. copies via "data-fork mode"? i assume that these files will be missing a resource-fork tho.. but it works!!!!
-rawrite (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/utils/dos/).. To make an image file from a Mac floppy the syntax is: rawrite2 a: c:\name.img Moving the .img file to a Mac, use the Creator Changer to set the Creator & File types to Disk Copy's Read/Write types: "Creator Type: ddsk and File Type: dimg". From there, either lock the image before mounting or use Disk Copy 6 to convert the image to a safer Read Only or Disk Copy 4.2 format.
-WinImage (http://www.winimage.com/download.htm).. available in many diff builds for diff os'es.. im using the 16bit version for win3.11 and its working like a charm, simply pop in a disk and under the file menu select Disk, and "read disk" and it creates a .ima file (or .imz compressed) from the disk which, apparently can be copied to mac and with the addition of the creator codes, opened with our beloved disk copy!!!!!! the extracted image is saved into a directory that can be set in the options preferences pulldown menu, but u have to manually select to save to a file after the disk contents are read into memory, using file save as dialog <--- this seems like the winning solution to me!!! and alot more *Available* then macopener v2 or v3 (which i can only find on ftps i cant access or ebay auctions i dont really want to buy!)
http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/macopener-dataviz-windows-31-95-nt-reading-144mb-mac-formatted-floppies
visit this thread to see the replys from miketomtom which contain links + more info then this post
8)
i still hope that perhaps someone will read this and kindly attach macopener 2 or 3 to a post as a file attachment!!! as its only like 1mb!!!

ok so macopener is abandonware! and they suggest using http://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/ but i wonder if that one is macos9 compatible
