i know alot of people were trying + having problems with the ibook g4s + imic roms
did anyone ever try the imic modified rom on any of the ibook g3s?

ok i see the highest ibook g3 was the 900 + it still ran mac os 9 -- DUhhhh ;)

looks like a cute little machine for light midi apps

question: does that extended desktop hack for these machines work in 9?? or is that x only?
that would be sweet to have this as a portable little 9 machine..using it with a usb keyboard.. + attached to
a bigger display when using it at home...

From everything I've tried and read, G4 iBooks can indeed be reworked to boot into 9. The problem is that hardware drivers (namely, video card drivers and IIRC power/energy management) don't play nice, making them pretty much useless.

A really good start would be a working OS9 driver for the Radeon 9200 and 9550/9600 graphics cards. Open source drivers exist for x86 systems, but maybe porting those to OS9 would be manageable for someone with a little programming skill. I don't know about power management, but without those drivers the system runs at 100% and gets really hot.

And while we are dreaming, we may as well throw some Airport Extreme OS9 drivers into the mix.

i think the answer is no. no 100% success. as you said. because of this radeon 9200 driver behaving strangely..

Necro-bumping this after some research,

Ok I'm thinking of Mac OS 8.6 but I need FireWire (I believe the most luck would be had with a G3)
so any word on 8.6 on an iBook G3 / 500 Dual USB?
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/specs/ibook_500.html
Identifiers: Dual USB - M7698LL/A* - PowerBook4,1 - M6497 - 1875
It's one of the few Macs that is G3 and has FireWire +Legacy boot
2X AGP ATI Rage Mobility 128 graphics with 8 MB of VRAM

This is from the "ramblings" post on MacRumors:
Quote
"5. Mac OS 8.6 boots with a happy Mac and a desktop!
6. I copied all of the ATI and FireWire extensions from Mac OS 9.2.2 across to the 8.6 System Folder and rebooted again (applying the OF commands on each boot). With these extensions, we have full graphics acceleration and FireWire support. This part was easier than I expected it would be."

I was able to boot MacOS 9 into my iBook G4 1.33GHZ 2005 using iMic's hack. The laptop booted
seamlessly and all jacks seem to work. USB 2.0 obviously doesn't boot into MacOS9. How about a
hack for that? It runs very hot. Brightness keys work in reverse. Hope I'm not repeating something
someone already knew in 2013. Anyway, iBook G4 1.33 GHz works!
