Title: Drive setup not seeing OSX partition drives
Post by: torvan on April 22, 2017, 06:16:23 PM
I have a 256GB drive, yet the unofficial 9.2.2 cd I have for the MDD sees just 132GB of it.

So I rebooted into OSX and partitioned them, ensuring the OS9 disk drivers are installed.

Rebooted with the CD and they do not see ANY of the partitioning done in OSX. Wants to reformat the drive and again sees just 132GB of it.

Ideas?

Check twice you are in Apple Partition Map and not in MBR or GUID. Check OSX diskutility>partitions

Also check you are choosing HFS+

Format: Mac OS Extended (not Journaled)-----> Confirmed
Apple Partition Format-----> Confirmed.

Any other ideas?

This is vexing me something fierce.

The part where you say OS9 "sees" only 132Gb makes me think that it's showing you a number based on HFS… NOT HFS+

You're booting from a CD? Are you trying to install OS9 from that into a partition?

Boot OSX and initialize the drive Mac OS extended journaled. Partition as desired. Drag copy the OS9 files from the CD into where you want it. Bless the OS9 System. Then reboot from the installed System and see what happens.

132 makes me think of 137, which means that the IDE controller has that nasty limit ;)

Okay, here is the full details of what I see

I use the 10.4.6 DVD, go to Drive Setup. Set both drives to Mac OS Extended, one 160 GB partition, then one 90 GB Partition.
I reboot using the OS9Lives CD, up comes Drive Setup.  It sees:

Apple_HFS_Untitled_1
Apple_HFS-Untitled_2

But wants to initialize the disk still into a single 131071 mb Mac OS Extended drive.

Now this is a 2003 iMac G4 PowerMac6,1 at 1 Ghz.

According to Accelerate Your Mac, (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html) I would apparently need the Intech Hi Cap driver. Not if I use OSX though. Naturally, I do not have said driver.

Sigh.

Sigh is right. I gotta learn to always ask exactly what the hell machine we're talking about first.

Yeah, lucky you. You have the very very last old iMac before 48-bit ATA addressing. You might be screwed as far as OS9 goes on that drive.
FYI, even with that Intech Hi-Cap driver, you'd still be screwed - it only runs in OSX.

Anyway, Last chance: Try this:

1) In OSX Drive setup, make the first partition 128Gb or less.
2) Install OSX into the second partition.
3) Boot and run OSX.
4) While running OSX, drag copy the OS9 System files from the CD into the first partition.
5) Drag the System and Finder out of and back into the System Folder to make certain they're blessed.
6) Now, see if OS9 shows up in "Startup Disk". If no, scream as loud as you can and carefully smash the iMac into the smallest pieces possible. If yes
7) Select OS9 and restart. Happily use OS9 within the 128Gb limitation, remembering that older Mac OS files generally are way smaller than OSX-generation ones anyway, so 128 Gb will go a long, long way and it'll all be just fine.

* If you leave OSX installed, you can use it to move files back and forth between the partitions or to and from the computer and the outside world even though OS9 won't "see" any of that.
* Just don't use OSX Disk utility on the OS9 side - use OS9 Disk First-Aid only.

Holler back - If it works I'll be amazed  happy for you.

Guess it is smashing time. LOL.

Or I suppose I will just have to live with the fact the drive is physically larger than the OS can use. Sigh.

Are you saying you actually installed OSX, copied over the OS9 system etc and it all didn't work, or you just said screw it - not worth it?

Installed OSX (10.4.6) from DVD

Copied the System Folder from the OS9Lives CD.
Blessed the System and Mac OS icons as was described

Still will not boot using OS9. Nothing in Startup Manager at all except the OS9Lives CD and the OS X partition.

Tried them all in the same partition, tried it partitioned too.

At that point, I gave up and unplugged it and let it sit until I am ready to try again. Perhaps this weekend.

what gary describes will work, but it is still a risk. i would just use the drive as 132 mb drive and give a shit about the lost space.

we dont have the hi cap driver online? we shal add those, but i cant reach my servers now.

You have way more stubbornness / determination then I. I would have already just replaced the damn drive with a smaller one and called it a day…
