Title: Digi 002
Post by: darkwave on December 07, 2022, 06:06:49 AM
Hi, I installed Mac OS 9 9.2 on my Mac mini G4/1.25, with the idea of running Die Hard's InstantDAW. But I ran into a huge problem - I can't find drivers for my audio interface, which is a Digidesign Digi 002. I scoured the web to find drivers for this interface for Mac OS 9, but no luck. I read somewhere that there was an ASIO Digidesign Direct I/O for MacOS, but all the links are dead. If I can't use the interface with Mac OS 9, could I use InstantDAW with Mac Os 10.4 in "classic" mode? But really, I prefer Mac OS 9.

the AM III, 001, and ASIO DIO drivers are made by steinberg and should be on their ftp.

but i guess it is better to get another interface which has "native" ASIO solution.

Thanks for the answers. When I click on the link he gave me, a new browser window opens and no page opens. What should I find there, a driver? I can't find another interface at the moment, and I really like this one, it works great on my other machine, which is a Mac Pro with Mojave OS installed. Also, I really need 8 inputs and outputs, not many firewire interfaces have that many inputs and outputs.

If I am not mistaken, the DigiDesign Digi 002 R (Rack) is not OS 9 friendly, per-se.
Now, if you have an 002 CONSOLE… those reportedly DO work with OS 9.

*I have an 002 Rack here that sits collecting dust after it proved non-functional
with OS 9. NOW… it might work with some flavor of OS X - but I never tried.

BUT… maybe this will help? Read this thread…
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,5960.msg44396.html#msg44396

OR, this link for Digidesign Pro Tools LE Version 5.3.2 for Digi 002.
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2474.msg14181.html

Do please report back with your findings and I may dust mine off
(but I firmly believe that the Rack version is only OS X compatible).

*Anyone in continental U.S. want a Digi 002 Rack for $10.00 plus shipping?
(The $10 is for the hassle of packaging it and I’m interested in trying a new
shipping route: PirateShip.com - reportedly saves $$$ over USPS or UPS.)

Yes, I forgot to mention that I have the rack version.

Edit - If I install Pro Tools LE Version 5.3.2, that should also install drivers, right? I don't use protools... But I'd appreciate it if it would help me use the interface with others DAW

Thank you, I was able to open the link, the problem was with my internet browser. I will try to download the drivers.

Edit - I downloaded a file called ASIO_DigiDesign_DirectIO5.sit.hqx However I don't know how to use it. I am very new to this OS.

Now you need to use Stuffit Expander in OS9 to decode (hqx) and decompress (sit). Then you will have the files and a read-me ;)

I did it, extracted the archive and now have it in sit format. The problem is that I still can't install Die Hard's InstantDAW, I'm looking at tutorials, there is a tutorial specifically on how to do it on my machine, but the tutorial uses two computers connected in a network to transfer the files, and I don't have another computer with mac os 9 .

it will be much easier if you use a second HD/SDD for this, so that you dont loose what you already have.

you´d restore the image to the new disk, and then after a reboot you can hold ALT to be able to choose from which disk you want to boot.

Can I use a USB hard drive adapter? Yes, my system works great right now and I don't want to reinstall it to split the hard drive in two.

Edit - Ooh, I just realized - the image InstantDAW is actually a whole Mac Os9 operating system, plus the DAW files, but not bootable? Apparently the problem is that it can't boot on the mac mini for some reason and has to have another install of the OS on another drive or on another partition on the same drive to boot from and select the drive on which InstantDAW is installed. Have I understood correctly?

I love tinkering with this stuff, I can do it for hours as long as it makes sense - is the Steinberg driver really capable of getting Cubase to work with my Digi 002 firewire audio interface? If so, then it makes a huge amount of sense and I would be very happy to be able to do it. My idea is just for recordings and not CPU heavy stuff to use my Mac mini and my Mac Pro 3.1 with 10.14, only turn on when I need to mix and master. There's something magical about this little old computer, and the macos9 operating system is so beautiful and clean and fast…

USB is to slow, you dont want to use this. but you can use firewire.

however, your mac has 4 internals ports for disks.

I didn't know there were 4 internals ports for disks, I've had it for two days and I haven't opened it yet. So it's a good idea to open it, I'm about to change the thermal paste and clean it of dust. As soon as it has internals ports for disks, I will be able to put another disk in it.

Then I have to use Apple Software Restore to unzip the InstantDAW image to the other drive? As far as I understand Apple Software Restore will take care of initializing the other drive automatically? Now I'm going to open the machine and take a look inside.

Maybe there's a misunderstanding - my machine is a Mac Mini G4, it only has one hard drive port, but I could use the optical drive port to connect another hard drive, but I might need an adapter.

In case you’ve not already seen this:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,4719.msg33870.html#msg33870

And if you don’t want to go through the process of multi-partitioning your existing hard drive, I think that ProTools5LEGuy initially suggested the SSD optical drive caddy (adapter) to substitute the OD in the mini (with the possible addition of an SSD mounted in that).

*YET - if your current Mac mini’s HD is still a conventional spinner (especially in a 1.25 GHz mini) I’d strongly suggest replacing it with a larger SSD - that you could then multi-partition… allowing one partition for the original contents of your current HD. (This option keeping your OD intact.) Then you could install DieHard’s Instant DAW / as detailed by the link above to devils_advisor’s install video.

However, still have yet to confirm that the Digi 002 R even functions under OS 9. And if not, well then some other, more suitable interface might be necessary. (Unless you plan to use the 002 R under OSX [ AND NOT “CLASSIC”] on the mini.) ;)

sorry, i could swear that i read "MDD 1,25" ^^

yes, remove the optical and get a "white case" adapter for IDE 44-pin to msata or m.2 from your favorite chinese crap dealer.

they work great and you can easily reuse the SSD later somewhere else.

a second drive has another benefit in a mini: you can install and use dualboot OS9 and OSX without any hassles and additional insider tricks, bc that is not fully supported with only one disk.

...By the way, now I'm trying to install InstantDaw, I transferred to my Os9 machine the 5 files I downloaded on the laptop with a flash drive. But one of them can't be copied, it gives me the following error every time:

The item "Diehard VST DAW.img.002.bin" cannot be read, because an error of type -39 occurred. Do you want to continue?

                                                        stop continue

And when I select "continue" the copy fails. Any ideas why this is happening? I tried to download the image again because I thought there was some error in the download, but the situation did not change.

Error -39 is "unexpected end of file". Maybe the file is corrupt.

There have been no changes and many have had no issues downloading and installing... that being said, I don't know if file hosting corrupted it, we need someone else to download it and try it; remeber the files have to be "un-binned" (encoding removed via stuff-it) before tying to install, but it sounds like you cant even get it copied so I am sure that's not the issue. The speed of USB1 is terrible under OS9, try to use FTP between computers

Dear lovely people, I apologize for not having time to delete or edit my last post - actually, there are no problems with the file! It turned out that the problem was that I had formatted the flash drive in Windows... 3 of the four files had no problem copying, only part 2 had problems for some reason, but whatever the reason, it was caused by the fact that I had formatted the flash drive in Windows. After I formatted the flash drive in the Mac Os9 system, the problem disappeared.

I have now managed to install on a separate partition Instant Daw, I have some problems with the mouse freezing, but when I turn off the extensions with shift held during boot, the mouse works normally. I will find out which extension is causing the problem and disable it. Tomorrow I hope to have time to test the system with my audio interface, if they work together I will be very happy. I may be the first person to confirm or deny that Digi 002 r works on Mac Os9 system. This will probably be a long process involving a lot of trial and error, I work all evening and almost all night as a sound engineer in a bar Friday and Saturday, and tomorrow I probably won't have time, but these days I hope to find time and try to get the audio interface working.

Thank you all for your time, I'm glad I found this wonderful site.

Postscript: I apologize for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker and I'm using google translate because I'm very bad with grammar.

no need to apologize i made the same error weeks ago formatting on windows (thanks, diehard!)
waiting for my EMAGIC EMI 2|6 (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/emagic-emi-26 (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/emagic-emi-26)) to arrive because it appears to be the smallest for factor for my powerbook ti rig to run a twotrack from a modern rig into os9 and back (it also looks nice on a macminig4), there are not many USB interfaces around
//we need an audio interface overview//
