Title: Members Post (My Music/Video) - Members share their Audio & Video Creations
Post by: MacTron on May 18, 2014, 07:56:15 AM
I'm going to inaugurate this new section with some of my recent works. Opinions, suggestions and "likes" or "dislikes" are welcome...

1-Faiado

2-LostSummer

3-SyncMonster

4-Esperanza

5-Argos

6-DiscoÑa

All this themes were made on a G4 MDD running  Mac Os 9. The audio/MIDI software used was Cubase VST 5  with NI Kompakt and NI FM7 as virtual sinths (VSTi). In some themes PowerCore plugins  were used.
No midi or pre-sampled phrases or loops were used. All is made with absolute original material, but most instruments patchs.
Nor live midi sequenced or live audio recorded also. Pure scoring, pure computer, PURE Mac Os 9 DAW! :)

This is my first work with orchestra and chorus, perhaps someday I'll try to develope it a bit more and fix the end.

Sync Monster = Jan Hammer = Miami Vice
Yes, that's true!

Right! But the distorted guitar chord is so Miami Vice. I am a big fan of the series. I actually started computer music on the age of 10 after I saw Jan Hammer performing "Crockett's Theme" with a keyboard and a Macintosh. I had both but no midi-interface so I terrorized my local music shop with tons of questions and finally, after 2 years, I had my (imported) opcode interface. This track brings back memories!  ;D

"Sync monster" reminds me some details of Queen´s "Radio Gaga" and Survivor "Eye of the Tiger"

Crystal clear sound and mix :)    Nice way of using the synths in orchestral mode; the only thing that I dislike on your music is the vocal tuning on "Discoña"...

Hi,

You can listen to some recordings on a rocker mood (don´t tell that I did not told about...) that I did with some friends some years ago:

All guitars there are from me, beside many other things. 8)

put up a track or two,vid/art or something:-) and say a few words about it if you want....

here's my effort:-

synthwave/soundtrack mix

sequenced some old synths/drum machine and recorded them to tapedeck, then back into the comp:-),i've not heard it on speakers
but it should sound alright as I've not heard anyone moaning about it yet!(did it on headphones-I've got two autistic daughters
that make lots of noise/dont like my noise, heh).

Instant DAW is a lifesaver. I’ve had to redo my OS9 installations a few times and it’s been a quick way to get back up and running.

That is the new Prophet 10. And I think it sounds great.

Another Quadra 700 sequenced track, multi tracked into Live 11 as Midi Clock Slave to Q700.

I found serial on the Unitor to be a bit tighter on Cubase, just had to have another DAW clocked to it for multi tracking.

Got a Keyspan Serial card and will see how much more I like it on OS9. Might not work as well in OSX though.

Having audio and midi in one box is nice because it lines up really close to the midi notes. Haven’t really had that level of tightness previously.

What settings do you use for your SX cards? I keep getting MIDI overload messages from OMS and the option of “Forget Port or Reset Port”

Something inside me suggest that a Cubase Mac OS9 mixing engine in 32 bits sounds better than the Logic X summing.

Please do a remix in Mac OS 9 cubase to probe me wrong.

My first "officially released" OS 9 creation... a minimal techno remix.

https://baserythmique.bandcamp.com/track/touched-h-s-remodel

Produced entirely in Live 4 on my Power Mac G4. Totally sample-based, processed with a smattering of vintage VST effects. Left the G4 only for final mastering on a modern MacBook.

Listen through to the end. Those familiar with the instability of OS 9 may be launched into a PTSD flashback...  ;)

A quick note - I'll gladly host* the creme de la creme of your creations on Cornica's Music section (http://www.cornica.org/music/) in Quicktime format. That way, you can browse & stream it with Classilla right on Mac OS 9 and don't need to rely on OSX :-)

Here's a quick guide on how to upload (http://www.cornica.org/contribute/)

Let me know what you guys think

First of all I think your post should have been posted here:

Well I was wondering what kind of creative stuff you guys might be making with all this great old tech,
put up a track or two,vid/art or something:-) and say a few words about it if you want....
I've been thinking about the very same thing, then finally found the above shown hints.

Secondly - YOU ROCK!

MACOS9LIVES
   DieHard ROCKS.

I really like it a lot, especially the intro, must have heard it 15+ times meanwhile typing this post. Afterwards YouTube keeps playing Africa by Toto for me, released as a single in October 1982. The Nostalgia flashback trip is complete.
Why is Toto Africa so popular?
"The song's popularity is aided by the fact that it's actually a very well-crafted piece of music, with driving drum loops, layered harmonies, and an anthemic chorus. The lyrics can be a bit hard to make out, and as is often the case with 80s tracks." I could say the very same for your track DieHard, mean that  -no I'm not trying to suck up to the Boss.

For the third, you have balls, it takes balls to post something as personal as this, way to go -tipping my cap.

Now to the serious point.
I did pm DieHard a couple of days after joining, letting him know that I already had gotten some ideas. Now I could just have kept with the pm. But as MacTron slogan goes: Please don't PM about things that are not private.

I love this awesome community and the wild, Wild West of this forum, as it gets both my brain halves working and I like connecting the dots.

It's crystal clear that

There are graphic artists, publishers, and writers that claim they can create projects faster with OS 9 because it "thinks" the way they do; they focus on one or two things (applications) at a time and see them to completion.

Take the Topic: Members Introduction... time to reflect on our past that got us here :) (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,1991.0.html) (Read 225757 times)

Or take for e.g. user Canned Brain (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=profile;u=2437) "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." (George Orwell)
He's a Creative Writer, among many other things.

Then take, well pick anyone, it's amazing reads, I have many, many hours of reading ahead of me, just in one topic.

Did not mean to expose anyone, just showing examples :-[ -sorry you two. Here let me just expose myself too. I sent a pm to user siddhartha77 on January 08, 2022.
Hi siddhartha77

The past days I've been pondering about that Captain's Quarters II. I feel like I've seen it before, many years ago, maybe when I was using the Hotline client. Anyway, is there any possibility that you know how one goes about creating the digital image art that are shown on the login page of Captain's Quarters?

Come to think of it, it may very well have been something that have come up in my mind many times over the years. I'd like to explore into it. What applications do one need to use to convert an image into that. That art style suits my new cyberpunk art punk style perfectly, and I thought of using it on billboards in the futuristic cities in my artworks. Mind that my work cannot be recreated using any digital medium, so when I have an imaged converted into the looks of the Captain's Quarters page, I'll then again have to convert it manually back into a physical artwork, before I make a giclée print and video of it.

Hope to hear from you

My best Cas

I was referring to the image used in the ZTerm app., found on the left side of the desktop on his link: os9.ca (https://os9.ca/#) from his post: Topic: os9.ca (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,6173.msg46128.html#msg46128)

There are so many that have introduced themselves, with true feelings, only posted once, but with great enthusiasm. We have a place in the forum for the techs, the scavengers, collectors, builders, Mac hacks, coders, developers, programmers etc. As well as for the musicians, composers -but not really for the latter. Yes for the technical application part, but not really a place.
A place like a Board or a Child Board where the musicians, composers, artists, graphic artists, publishers, poets, writers, authors, the list goes on. Can exchange their ideas, showcase and post their works, for everyone using Mac OS 9 or any of the other Original Systems. Sure they can do it and can continue to do it where they do it now, but people don't get which OS we are taking about and think we are out of this world. All us, that are here, think differently, now that we are here, we might as well stick together.
Could we establish that and have a locked Welcome Board Topic that asks newcomers what interest they have and links that direct them to the specific Boards/Child Boards. ?

My proposal isn't anything new, just connecting the dots.

MacTron mentioned it back in 2014:
Topic: GUIDELINES - Embedding MP3 audio in the forum post. How to.  (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,1110.msg4152.html#msg4152) (Read 10655 times)
It's also here you'll find Chris mentioning it was his idea of enabling the button for embedding YouTube videos.

I also totally agree with Mat's post from 2016:
Topic: Please stop embedding Youtube videos (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,3047.msg19531.html#msg19531) Good thing autoplay is disabled.

Can we enable a button for embedding tracks too, from Soundcloud or wherever? I know it has to work for users visiting the site from within Mac OS 9. The (tiff, air, aifc) format was released in 1988 (.mp3) in 1991, (.flac) in 2001 and (.ogg) in 2003.
Pictures of svg or any other artworks can be compressed to the file size next to nothing.
Some basic rules must be established.

Quote from: Cashed
I really meant it when I said: "After finding this site and using OS 9, I'm astounded at how extraordinarily advanced and fast the system and the thousands of applications are. Except for the GUI look and huge app sizes, the 'modern' have had very little, 'new' -if nothing, to offer me."

I'd really like for us to gather the unique more howl-hearted, and bring them home, for real.

i believe it is really difficult to find someone who would actually say that his composing work would be mostly releated to MacOS9, (i.e. more than to anything else)

for myself the connection is only indirect: my composing is releated to my programming - and i prefer to program software in OS9.
but does that mean that creating is related to a certain OS? not sure. it is releated to a lot of things, but not the OS i use.

The lyrics can be a bit hard to make out, and as is often the case with 80s tracks."[/I] I could say the very same for your track DieHard...

Yeah, my diction sucks, trying to work on that :)

I love this awesome community and the wild, Wild West of this forum, as it gets both my brain halves working and I like connecting the dots.

Yes, I like to think of us as the "Westworld" of forums...

Why Mac OS 9 ?
User Responsiveness...There are graphic artists, publishers, and writers that claim they can create projects faster with OS 9 because it "thinks" the way they do; they focus on one or two things (applications) at a time and see them to completion.

Also, let's not forget that OS9 is "art" expressed as a GUI.  It has a real beauty in both aesthetics and simplistic functionality.
Yes I used Logic X to make the song, but Logic X was chosen for it's workflow attributes, I could have still gotten that quality out of Mac OS 9.

Then take, well pick anyone, it's amazing reads, I have many, many hours of reading ahead of me, just in one topic...

Yes, many core members have molded this place into our current iteration, but there is always room for more like minded, I get the feeling that Cas will join the inner circles.

Cool, didn't know you were a programmer, that's awesome. So I 'heard' somewhere that porting a .vst plug-in from Mac OS 9 to the other side on X, should be 'easy,' Is that true?
Which applications would one need to use, and if so, the other way around, from X to Mac OS 9, may be the same?

Haven't made a search on the entire forum, before replying to you. I should ask this question in a new post, but it does kinda fit in here anyway.

"What was supposed to become a tutorial video, hit so many technical snags along the way that I decided to just upload the track after fixing all the technical glitches."
Really liked that 'tutorial video' a lot, could not hear any of the crackling in my end.

"Been busy building my setup up to full capacity."
Man, my brain hurts after watching your video, so many units to keep track of.
Loved the synthwave! After hearing it for the 4th time, there's a bit too much overdrive on that lead, at least in my end.
Damn! You got a lot of retro in the video -that comes afterwards: 'Atari ST Sketchbook session. Akai S3200 DnB and Roland JD990 Chillout Techno.'

Soviet Disco (Demo)
Loved that one too, there's an audio glitch just past the middle tho, don't know if you've noticed it.

Glad you got that SoundDiver 2.1.3 working ;) Keep up the good work with your hundred units, phew man.

Knew I had seen you YouTube, but couldn't find you post again when I was replying, whereas the late edit.

I love the pump in your Techno remix, I'm guessing the tiny clicking sounds in Left & Right are on purpose?
Sounds like the metronome is active. I do like your track, could easily be used as background music in a bar of some sci fi movie.
I'm missing some variation tho in your track, actually a lot, when the length is 9.30. The variation could easily be the taken from the end of your track,
where it sounds like you ran out of ram:-)

Yea I get you and agree, creations come from every possible means, that includes different Operating Systems.

not that i wouldnt be a macos9 nerd. but i try to hide that from myself when i actually work on something.

for me it is just "never change a running system" and not really "omg it´s so cute, because it´s so vintage"

So I 'heard' somewhere that porting a .vst plug-in from Mac OS 9 to the other side on X, should be 'easy,' Is that true?

i am not a C++ guy, but i can assure you that you have to recompile and eventually rewrite this kind of stuff.

even carbon based OSX vsts could not be used or hacked in/for OS9 - and there is no carbon based vst host in OS9 (as opposed to video programs and some others)

the tools of these days were in OS9: codewarrior 7.x - but most developers sweared to continue using codewarrior 5.x for the VST SDK.

in OSX: you´d simply upgrade online to the latest XCode for 10.4.11 (i think 2.0)

saying that, we are still looking for a copy of the sdk v 2.1 (midi input -> required for instruments).
now that v2 is illegal to host in public it is probably even more unlikely, but i thought i mention it.^^

however, if you want to start playing with VST in OS9, there is an SDK 2.0 available via PM (you will still not be allowed to distribute your plug-ins though) and there are a few open source projects around (sophia, mda (but not sure about 2.x) nathan wolek, freeverb... 2 or 3 more)

Oh great knowledge there, THANKS llO

Great to get the facts, I read someone said it on a forum some months back.
Now I can wipe that idea from my head and clear out some space.

That Soviet Disco track is something i've been wanting to finish once I have my next studio space built. Not sure where that scratchiness came from in that mix down, still servicing my console/interface to full working order.

thanks for checking out those tracks.

Here's another I did with Live 4 on my G4 MDD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwxCT776F1k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwxCT776F1k)

Social Post・Help・Extending the functionality of Mac OS 9

Cool! Thanks Architecture for caring & sharing (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/Themes/blu/images/post/thumbup.gif)
Holy! Cow! Awesome! You've got a Minimoog (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimoog)!
My brain can't keep up. I'm so impressed with you true musicians.
It takes a hell of a lot of skills mastering what you guys can do.

____▽
I've been fiddling...
This is more of a preliminary test run, (embedding test.)
It doesn't really count, as it was made in Cat. back in September, before Bill Gates crashed my Cat.
It could easily tho, have been made using Mac OS 9 only.

Nonetheless it's my work, a fraction of it anyway. An arpeggio were used.
The lenght is complete, but the track ain't. Still got work to do for the final version, e.g. the intro from v0.1.

Preliminary tests:
Next Synthesizer v0.3.aif (cons: file size 13,2 MB -too big, Not uploaded)
MIDI conversion test (pros: file size 41 KB. cons: blueprint & missing sounds, -Not uploaded)
QuickTime Broadcast test 1: deleted (pros: file size 33 KB. cons: 24/7 broadcasting in Snow Leopard on Mac Mini 13 watts -Uploaded-Streaming)
Next Synthesizer v0.3: Next Synthesizer v0.3.mp3 (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6009.0;attach=9525) (pros: files size 639 KB. cons: -low quality, sounds bad -Uploaded)
QuickTime Broadcast test 2: Next Synthesizer v0.3.mov (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6009.0;attach=9526) (13,2 MB *Uploaded *Only to test if the 'player window' shows up -will delete)
DropBox Folder Share test: Next Synthesizer v0.1 - v0.3 (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/syhqzt48z1a28fi/AADiQfmw2tp3FdJAhEfe3xwsa?dl=0) (pros: 2 GB Free Dropbox Account. cons: new browser window opens up. 3 clicks required. 1. log out. 2. connection error. 3. opus shared folder)

*Update: Choose Dropbox for now. (But not a viable option. Click Link 3 Times, 1 logs you out -if you're logged in, 2 gives connection error, 3 opens shared folder)
Support ending on April for My WD Cloud 3 TB -being too old, so not an option either.
Neither will streaming be. -QuickTime BroadCast file deleted.

file need to be stored online at a streaming host.
Need to check Soundcloud embedding, mod the youtube embedding.
Will look into tweaking code for embedded links and minimized window later.

*Will return to edit post, for further testing

I’m surprised I haven’t listened to Camouflage more. This stuff sounds great, especially for 1987.

OK, these probably should not count since they are cover songs, I found these live 2014 cell phone videos from the sound guy's channel that provided the PA for the festival event.

I did let him borrow my Apple titanium Powerbook with Mac OS 9.2.2 and CuBase VST 5/32 and the audio was recorded directly from the stereo mixer channel with no fixes or overdubs... he made the videos and copied the live sound; you can even hear all the Diehard guitar mistakes, although I did drink about 5 Vodka and cranberries per show back then so it is what it is...lol

Ok... now that was pretty terrifying, I am guessing that is the soundtrack to an alien abduction. Thank God at 5:28, they were being returned.

Can photography, and digital graphic production play too?

“Show Us some of your music or video Work…”

Very low-rez image collage, created for now long-gone
website… discovered here on G3 B&W recently.
Some of the inset images produced before advent
of Photoshop & desktop publishing.

(When dinosaurs rooled  the earth.)
Yes… THAT OLD.

Upper right corner & lower right corner insets produced
“by hand” - using “multiple-image-photocomposition”
