Title: AHT v1.0 / Mac Mini
Post by: FdB on September 25, 2018, 03:02:47 PM
Okay… who possibly has original G4 Mac mini install discs? Maybe these need to be available via download here?
The first disk has Apple Hardware Test v1.0 for the mini. [Macintosh Repository has one (of the two
install discs) but it seems that they require a $10.00 donation to download such a big file.]

And there were posts concerning AHT v1.0 over on Macintosh Garden, but the link(s) seem
to be dead. AND a standalone version of AHT v1.0 doesn’t seem to be available (yet).

Anyone?

Halp! I’m looking for the b) version, noted in the image below.
I’ve got a pair of recently acquired 1.42 GHz minis that I was going to offer up here, at cost.
BUT, not until I check ‘em out thoroughly. (Might need to replace a HD or Combo drive.) ;)

Troyd? You here?

I have 3 grey discs for the Mac mini, they are version A though so might not help.

1st Disc is 10.3.7 Install 1 and AHT 1.0 (2Z691-5213-A)
2nd Disc is 10.3.7 Install 2 (2Z691-5499-A)
3rd Disc is labelled "Mac mini" and below "Mac OS 9 Install Disc" (2Z691-5212-A) , which is for installing software including os 9 to be used by Classic (blue box), but I have wondered why then Mac OS 9 is also on Disc 2

Sounds promising. With supposedly three iterations of the Install Disc sets featuring the three different, basic Operating Systems (10.3.7, 10.4.0 and 10.4.2)… I wonder if it might be possible to strip the AHT v1.0 from any of them, to then create a standalone version of AHT v1.0 for all four varieties of G4 mini? That would be a “smaller footprint” download, easily made available here for all?

From the available info, seems that you have the “first set” of discs for the 1.25GHz mini. Your 3rd (OS 9) disc is a mystery, but your 2nd disc shares the same Apple I.D. as the set that I thought I needed (see below) for the 1.42GHz (although Troyd notes that the “a) set” is also for the 1.42GHz). Difference between the two a) / b) versions seems to be OS 10.3.7 versus 10.4.

(Long shot) hopefully, the University source of these 1.42’s may still have the original Install Discs that I may beg from them today? If not, I may be begging copies of yours ...or the possible creation of a standalone AHT v1.0 disc.

Thanks Ross. :)

Yes The Mini these are from is a 1.42Ghz Edition.
Would you like me to image any? The 3 or just the first 2?

To mount the AHT partition on the CD #1, I created a blank disk image then used dd in terminal to restore the Apple_Boot partition to the partition on the blank disk image. So I could make a standalone AHT disc, by putting this onto a partition on an image with the correct OS 9 drivers.

Title: Bootable Mac mini AHT

Thanks again Ross. Rather than image the 2 or 3 complete disks at this point, maybe the creation (and eventual posting) of the Mac mini - standalone / bootable AHT v1.0 would be most immediately beneficial for all. Possible, subsequently imaged disc(s) made available here… maybe should be “bounced off” of Herr DieHard first.

What say ye, Diehard?

Would like to “investigate” your 3-disc set eventually. Especially that mysterious 3rd disc. Yet, before you take that time and expend that effort, let me see what the Uni-boys turn up here… if anything. Seems odd that a student publications office with at least three 1.42GHz minis would not have at the very least, one complete set of original install discs? “Higher learning” and all. ;)

Well... so much for "higher learning".
University source reports that no such disc sets exist there and
then goes on to state that they "can definitely be found online".

Pffft! ::)
Title: Mac mini-Standalone AHT v1.0

Just an FYI… Ross Darker has created (yes, he’s at it again) a standalone version of AHT v1.0 for the pre-1.5GHz Mac mini
and that .iso is available here (for a limited time?) for those that may want or ever need such a thing.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CavAI-ShOd6zZiT0Zv54832KzI7hb3cy/view?usp=sharing

(Might do a little editing to see if it can be eventually used for the 1.5GHz minis too.)

While viewing Ross’s YouTube link, also stumbled upon this (for those of you that may not have ever seen it):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B-XwPjn9YY …or for those that might not have “been around”
in Nineteen-Hundred-Eighty-Four.

Ahh, nostalgia.

Thanks Ross!
(and Woz… und Steve.) ;)

yep its a good point to make to stop trying to see "the mini" as one model.. because as we all know apple likes to make each model unique under the hood.
you need to see the different models as exactly that.. different models..
and unless you are a glutton for punishment do NOT use the 1.5ghz mac mini discs on the 1.25 etc
