hello world!!! :)
i'm so glad i've found this place, i have always been fascinated by mac os 9 and that era of graphic design / music production / et cetera. i am starting to delve into it properly via emulation. it's either emulation or classic environment for me currently - i have an imac g5 although it is very sick, possibly suffering from bad capacitors...

Welcome to the forum Violetshylet !
There is no wrong way to get started ;)
And you iMac G5 is hanging in there as these machines were not well-born with temperatures and stability issues.

Welcome, @violetshylet!
Some G5s are very stable and lasting despite popular belief, such as the "Quad-Core" PowerMac G5, whereas others have earned the reputation so much, like the "Dual 2.7GHz" G5, that it hurt the image of even G5 models that work fine.
The word-of-mouth on the iMac G5 models is that they lie somewhere in-between: they are known to be problematic and hard to maintain or work with. But they aren't as prone to breaking and giving you nightmares as, say, the aforementioned 2.7GHz dual G5.
Best of luck! The cooler the room of your iMac G5, the better-off it will be without crazy amounts of maintenance.
If your iMac is based on the 970 processor, as opposed to the 970FX processor, you might also want to consider installing the "G5 Version" of Mac OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar on it instead of anything else: even though Classic is still available in 10.3 Panther and 10.4 Tiger, they are much, much worse at running almost everything in Classic. SheepShaver is mostly halfway-ok only for what Classic won't run.
