But the new installation hangs just before finishing the booting process. I'm trying to get this to work on a Quicksilver with a MAXPower G4 1.6 MHz upgrade. Any thoughts?

Did you ever have any version of OS9 running on it?
For example, my Sonnet upgrade, which works without issue in OSX, requires a specific Sonnet-written replacement extension to run OS9. Your NewerTech may have similar requirements.
Do you have the original manual & stuff?
From the NewerTech 7448 installation manual:
"• Make sure the Mac OS version is 9.2.x (or higher) with the NVRAM OS 9
compatibility enabled. If the NVRAM patch for OS 9 was not applied, the Mac
will freeze at a gray screen when trying to load Mac OS 9."
There may be other reason(s) as well.

I have installed the NVRAM patch for OS 9 as instructed by the NewerTech 7448 installation manual. The booting process doesn't stop with a gray screen, but hangs just after the extensions are loaded (and even when I push shift). I have never run OS 9 with this upgrade card, only with the original 733 MHz processor.
It's interesting that the installation CD-ROM boots just fine and I am able to complete the software restore process.

Did you get this far in the manual?
" Note: Make sure any OS 9 boot volumes have the CPU Plugins file removed from the System Folder/Extensions/Multiprocessing folder, or your machine will freeze just before loading the desktop. "

That was the ticket. I removed the CPU Plugins file and everything works fine. Thanks so much.
