Title: Selling my big Pro Tools 24 MIX rig
Post by: Knezzen on November 22, 2015, 11:01:17 AM
Time has come to move on, so im selling off my Pro Tools 24 MIX rig.
We have decided to invest in a newer Pro Tools HD rig (Mac Pro running Mavericks and Pro Tools 10 with 3 HD cards) to keep up with demand and remain compatible with our customers projects.

UPDATED 2016-09-12

Cards:
5x MIX Core
5x MIX Farm
1x MIX I/O (no DSP's for plugins, just I/O)

Cables:
12x digi cables
3x y-cables

Interfaces:
2x 888 i/o 16bit
1x 888 i/o 24bit
2x ADAT bridge 24bit
6x 882 i/o 24bit
1x Pro Tools branded (7 slot) Expansion Chassis
1x Magma branded (13 slot) PCI Expansions Chassi
1x MOTU wordclock generator

If you buy the whole package, you have an extreamly potent rig for tracking, mixing and mastring. It is what you call "turnkey" ;)

It has served us well, but it's time to move on. Have been used to record multiple albums, mixing and mastring. Sad to see it go, but I just don't have room for evetything.

Some pictures can be found here: http://studiobankvalvetgavle.se/studion/

If you have any questions, just ask :)

I don't right now, that's the sad bit. I thought about casing everything and put it in storage, but I just don't have room. More ads are coming up as I go through everything on the shelfs in the studio.

Mac Pro running Mavericks and Pro Tools 10 with 3 HD cards

If you load Mavericks, you will most likely go insane... dragging simple backups from the HD to another volume (or External HD) can take hours due to a system bug, also there are many other issues and the bug list goes on and on...

So, The OS X wish list DAW is Snow Leopard (the mac OS 9 of the OSX era) all the way if you can do it... I have to run most of my LP9 stuff on 10.8 Mountain Lion (next best to Snow Leopard) since Newer Kontakt 5.5 Libraries need at least 10.8

Even after a couple years I only have one working Mix Core. I had some Farms but they were defective. The shipping would be really expensive from Sweden for all of that unfortunately, and that's the perfect package for me to make it worse  :(

I know one big studio is Spain that has been working with MacOS9 PT5 wHD2 until 2008. But the cards were PCI-64bit . You got a decent TDM rig. I would keep using a 888 24 or an ADAT bridge with the 192 I/O legacy port

Then they built a hack that could use the core card and bought a new "proccess" card in pci express and they both get recognized. That in Tiger x86. Now they are in PT 10 HD on a new i7 hack. Thinking on moving to new Yamaha-Nuendo desks.

But they get more voices using motu 828 mk2 than with "DSP" HD2 (They got 2 PTHD2 sets). PT HD  has its limits when used thru HD gear when compared to CoreAudio drivers. I think voices, that are limited.

About modern OSes, Snow Leopard can use 10.3.10 PT HD.

On that studio they are now in ML, but kept using SL until 2 years ago.

If I want my UAD-1 pci to work on my hack, I have to stay on SL. No new browsers for SL. SL is the new MacOS9.  ;D

I am thinking on moving slowly to ML. Probably will get ML when its phased out.  ;D

So Knezzen what price are you asking for your 24 MIX rig?

I have no idea. Make me an offer! Trade for Pro Tools HD stuff and selling everything as a whole is prioritized.
Im not giving it away, but I don't want insane eBay money for it either :)

Shipping prices would be killer outside of the EU though.

Ok fine...theres alot of restrictions - so you must have some ball park figure that you want for it then - what is that figure?

If you have any questions, just ask :)

What would be the minimal setup to use an adat bridge?

Maybe in pieces? I see:

-A very good G4
-A lot of 88x
-A lot of cards: 1 Core, 6 Farm
-A Magma rig
-3 Adat bridges

Good luck and please keep telling us about your awesome studio.

If shipping wouldn't be so expensive to USA I would take it in a heartbeat. I'm getting close to finishing my tdm rig though. Just got a digi001 for an LE as well.

If I had some money, and were closer, I'd be all over this!

Oh, well. I'm probably better off :)

I hope it finds a good home.

What would be the minimal setup to use an adat bridge?

*MIX Core card
*ADAT Bridge
*ADAT compatible interface

I use mine with some Audient and Joemeek preamps. Works great :)

Sorry man, forgot to answer you question. 1000 EUR seems fair for everything listed in the first post.
More expensive when broken up for parts of course. Have payed more than double that for everything.

Just bought a Pro Tools HD3 PCIe system to replace this one. Will probably start breaking everything up next week.

Im still a bit unsure about selling or keeping it. Will probably make a final decision when the HD system is up and running like it should.

Sorry for the absence. I have been busy with a new job, got my first child and renovating the house and studio.

But it feels really good to be back :)

Updated the fist post with pictures and a better list of all the stuff.
