ok interesting so these discs are not supposed to degrade into garbage after 6-12 years like most normal cds lifespan..

 It was two years ago when we last wrote about Millenniata and its Millenial Disc for ultra long-term data storage of somewhere between "1,000 years" and "forever." If you'll recall, it works using a "synthetic, rock-like" layer that your data is "etched" into, rather than burned onto like other writeable discs so files don't corrupt over time. Since then, the disc's been given DoD certification for data retention in extreme conditions and redubbed M-Disc, while Hitachi-LG has signed on to produce drives. We recently got the chance to check out a few of these discs and see whether this tech will fly like a Frisbee or sink like a stone.
M-Disc Hands-on

The disks look and feel nearly identical to any CD-R or DVD-R you've used except that they're transparent, lacking reflection and dye layers, and they have an oddly pungent odor similar to film developer. The current iteration reads like a single-layer DVD-R with 4.7GB of space, and in the works are dual-layer as well as Blu-ray versions. While any DVD drive can read them, an M-Disc type is required for "burning" as the laser is calibrated differently. This is where LG's drives come in. The company was showing off a variant of an existing external Blu-ray and DVD burner that could also etch M-Discs, though internal versions are planned. The samples used were loaded with text and video files, and our laptops read them like any normal DVD-R.

im more interested in backup up ALL FILES on these discs.. i have lost all my data having it all on one massive drive before
this is why im so insanely into raid to ensure that i have redundancy!!! but true protection only comes from having a physical backup
in addition to redundancy fail-safe.. thats where M-DISC comes in!

just be careful with one thing: copying original media. because M-disc media is more like DVD-RAM than CD/DVD. they have fixed size sectors, and they could theoretically be overwritten by accident.

for software and audio backups you´d rather use MAM, i.e. regular CD/DVDs.

what is great with M-disc is that the "DVDs" are a bit bigger than normal ones, and that they write much, much faster than DVD-RAM will ever be able to.

currently they are more expensive than harddrives ... but for thing like running a  small fileserver they could already replace an external HD. if you think thats fun...

the question what remains is (as usual) if you can remove the front panel or not. if not, it wont fit into a quicksilver.

pretty sure you could, physically its the same as any other lg burner, i have one with the faceplate removed in my powermac g5 which i put there recently to replace the old.

I've tested the M-DISCs today. Toast 5.2.x wrote them without any problem.
I had to use "Toast CD Reader" instead of "Apple CD/DVD driver" to read them.

"Toast CD Reader" is an extension. It is usually installed with Toast and was made to substitute "Apple CD/DVD driver" to read CDs and DVDs.

Yes, reading DL is tested and confirmed. I haven't tested writing by now...

Yes, they are SATA.

Even if you have an SATA card, I think that the SATA to PATA adapters are the best option for CD-ROMs and DVDs drivers.

I am thinking about getting a new optical drive recently, and thus I like to bring up this thread again. I am especially interrested in DVD-RAM and M-Disks! I have a few questions:

M-Disk, can you tell me a little bit more about the usage with Toast 5? Is it simply recognized as DVD (which one +R, -R, ...?) and how fast does it burn the M-Disk at which Computer?

Can you confirm that this drive can burn DVD-RAMs? All listings I found do not list DVD-RAM?

What ATA to SATA converter are you using?

even the product description at LG says it does RAM (i believe that is their definition of "super multi")

regarding SATA converter, i always found it funny that OWC was selling SATA burners for use G4s, included an IDE adapter of which they said burning would not be supported at all with it.

Yes, it is recognized as a 4X DVD+R with Toast 5.2
