heres an example of the deals u can find if u wanna go SCSI
from what i could tell the u160 devices are usualy 64bit "long" pci cards (and therefore higher speed to mac g4, 266mb/s vs 133mb/s with 32bit 33mhz "short" pci adapters)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ACARD-AEC-67162M-2-CH-Ultra160-SCSI-Adapter-for-Mac-Complete-PRIORITY-SHIP-/121293110122?pt=US_Internal_Port_Expansion_Cards&hash=item1c3da1fb6a

says it supports up to 30 scsi devices?? i guess they get daisychained? i forget all this SCSI stuff .. it was "server only" quality back in the day

appears to be a 10k rpm drive? "Seagate cheetah"
very cheap price for a "NEW" 146gb scsi drive
might not be such a bad idea if theres alot of deals!
on second look its a u320 drive not u160
after a brief look it seems u320 scsi drives can be used with u160 cards.. but may require an adapter..

such as : http://www.ebay.com/bhp/80-pin-scsi-adapter

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATTO-ExpressPCI-UL2D-SCSI-controller-for-MAC-/231021641021?pt=US_Computer_Disk_Controllers_RAID_Cards&hash=item35c9f67d3d

heres an atto controller for under 40 bucks

these are mac os 9 bootable im pretty sure so if anyone knows a way to use a type of converter to connect an IDE or SATA drive to a SCSI adapter..
please share that info!

again the whole idea is to use a PCI 64 bit card to get the full 266mb/s potential of the 64bit/33mhz slot
there is 3 types of 64 bit cards we can get
1) IDE
2) sata
3) SCSI

the scsi + ide cards seem to be able to be found for VERY cheap as most people would think noone would ever want it.. as they dont even make ide drives anymore but of course
u can always use refurb drives or use sata to ide adapter

For what is my experience I recommend without reserve the ATTO PSC board, it is really a little wonder, your best friend in SCSI dealing from OS9 to OSX5, it fully support boot (from CD or DVD too) and mixed devices, it is cheap but very well supported from ATTO. I would not recommend the UL2D, it is not so compatible and versatile like the PSC.
Acard board are also very good, I owned a 67162M and performed very well but since I don't need performances but only compatibility I sold it and stick with the PSC :-) Believe me, it is really a swiss knife, absolutely nothing to do with Adaptec, the worse SCSI experience you will ever try on a Mac...
