hah, i was posting too fast. a cameleon voice uses 256 part(ial)s, bot 1024. but that are still ... many. :)

plus it has multimode filters and all kind of stuff which FM-7 does not have.

one simple biquad filter which is calculated in signal rate*) already takes about as much CPU as a whole DX-7 voice with 8 operators including feedback.

btw additive, interesting that there is no kurzweil clone yet, isnt it? the only proper additive synthesis plug i know is for TDM.

*) edit: no of course not at rate but only once per vector, but "as signal" as opposed to static.

remember the SOS Article has a inset paragraph describing this:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr04/articles/cameleon5000.htm

Quote
What Is Additive Synthesis?
Mathematician Jean-Baptiste Fourier demonstrated that any repeating waveform can be reduced to a series of sine waves of different frequencies and amplitudes, superimposed on top of one another. When that waveform has a definite musical pitch, it's because the frequencies of the contributing sine waves are mathematically related, and it's this insight that inspires additive synthesis. A sampler simply records and plays back complex waveforms directly, without attempting to analyse them. Additive synthesis, by contrast, 'builds up' a waveform by adding together sine waves, beginning with the root or fundamental frequency of a note and working up through the appropriate related frequencies (known as harmonics or partials). In theory, this technique promises sounds that are realistic, yet malleable in ways that samples can never be.
Of course, it's not quite as simple as that. In order to provide a realistic recreations of real instruments, an additive synthesizer also needs some way of reproducing the unpitched noises, like the 'thunk' of a piano hammer or the 'chiff' of a flute, that they make in addition to their harmonically related partials. Moreover, the harmonics produced by real, physical systems don't always have precisely the relation to the fundamental frequency that theory says they should, and these discrepancies must be accounted for. Most importantly of all, an additive synthesizer needs to do more than just reproduce a 'snapshot' of an instrument's waveform: it needs to mimic the way that waveform changes over time. As most devotees of SOS's Synth Secrets series know only too well, in most real-world sounds, the higher-frequency partials die away more quickly than the fundamental and the lower harmonics. The basic task of reproducing the harmonic content of a source sound can require 64 or even more partials, and if the sound is to evolve naturally rather than remain static, each of these must have its own envelope. Reproducing the real-world detuning of the partials and unpitched content of an instrument's sound is also no trivial matter.

this is the reason entirely for the name of the synth.. the change in waveform appearance over time like a chameleon reptile changes its color.

really it was a bold aspiration by this developer who started out with just "camelPhat" dinky little vst;)

Hey did you guys ever find this? I'm going to dig through my old server and some stored G4's to see if I can find the last working version.

I have to say if memory serves this is an entirely different sounding instrument to Alchemy (which is also great albeit very different). The granular functions in Alchemy are wonderful but the pure additive synthesis (although they made ways to load your Camelon 5000 patches) sounds very different in Camelon.

I'm currently setting up some new rigs for the studio we've been building here and I'm planning on building a computer just to run either Live or VEPro as a host to 8 additive instruments. I'm going to make an autoload and have a dedicated controller, fader box (USB), audio interface and MIDI for this machine and treat it as a synthesizer.

I'm planning on benchmarking Camelon (and Alchemy) on a variety of computers to find the most powerful software/hardware version combination. My goal is to run at least 4 on this rig with a lot of polyphony (stacked and in surround).

I have a feeling running a VEPro 32bit Windows server audio and midi over Ethernet will be the most powerful combination but when I figure it out I'll let you guys know.

If you get one thing out of this thread remember this, Alchemy and Camelon are both great synths, but for glassy, ethereal and haunting hollow pads (think Kawai K5000, Hartman Neuron, DK Syngery II etc) this instrument is unrivaled in software or hardware to date (imho and I'm an additive synthesis junkie).

Anybody finds 1.7 mac/OSX/OS9/Windows pm me. Since they sold to Apple I think they've all gone permanently snowboarding!

Best,
_BT

Camel Audio will soon release a revolutionary new virtual synthesiser, featuring unique resynthesis and sound morphing technologies, and offering unparalleled ease of programming.

The CA5000 blurs the boundaries between sampling and synthesis in unprecedented ways.

Want a bass sound with the tone of an acoustic, but the punch of an electric? Simply import samples of both, and click in the "morphing square" to create your own hybrids. Imagine a patch with the harmonics of a human voice, and the percussive attack of an acoustic piano. Imagine real-time morphing between a vibraphone and a choir, or a flute and a guitar. With the CA5000, anything is possible.

Camel Audio's new Sonic Blueprint analysis algorithms and Hybrid Synthesis sound warping technology (patents applied for) are the results of several years' painstaking research in the field of digital signal processing. Theory is put into practice with the CA5000: a unique musical instrument, notable both for its exceptional sound quality and intuitive user interface.

At its heart lies a powerful additive synthesiser, with freely detunable partials and a flexible 128 band noise generator. Any WAV format sampled sound can be imported and "blueprinted", its key characteristics instantly captured and made available for use in the CA5000's synthesis engine.

Advanced data reduction techniques allow the complex description of real acoustic sounds to be reduced to a relatively small number of parameters, for easier real-time manipulation. The synthesiser offers both velocity and keyboard scaling, allowing you to add heightened expressive "realism" to even your most outlandish creations.

The CA5000 comes with a comprehensive library of both acoustic and electronic sounds, organised into categories including bass, pads and strings, among others. These sounds can be browsed, by sound or by category, from the CA5000's easy-to-use interface.

The CA5000 will be available from October in PC VST, Mac OSX VST and AU formats. The price is expected to be around £199. You'll be able to download a demo version or buy online at www.camelaudio.com

We acquired it in 2014, but Camel Audio was still in business, at this point they are not, so we are assuming that this dead-end legacy software for OS 9 is now defunct; if we get notified to pull it, then we will comply.

off topic, but imho worth mentioning since synth-strategy is very similiar.
Wolgang Palm (PPG) included the noise and detuned aspects in his Infinite IOS synth.

i find the presentation weird and i dont understand how they can claim that the PPG would have allowed only "harmonic" partials. the PPG wave always allowed to use nonharmonic partials, just with very low resolution on both axis (lenght and bit depth) and of course only when smallerl than /1.

tbh I don't fully understand that instrument yet, but it's the designer himself to make this claim about limitations of his previous creations.
Imho it's not meant in the sense of even/uneven harmonics, but refers to individual, slightly detuned partials in the cent range.

I'm a big Fender P-Bass fan, strung with flatwounds and recorded straight via a quality DI.
So a synthbass often isn't that exiting (for my personal taste), but Infinite allowed to tweak some basses that were plain stunning - in punch, expression and tonal depth.
(usually this app is associated with synth atmospheres lingering in endless spaces...)
It was a big surprise and while still puzzling what exactly caused this 'so natural' impression, it confirms W. Palm's statement (I just modded some presets).

For anyone interested in the Camel Audio synth approach this is a valid alternative.
Requirement is IOS 8, so it will run on older iPads. I use it on an Air-2, but can check on an iPad 2 how much juice it needs.
In any case it's an outstanding synth and the touch design/response is great in all PPG apps.

yes the name i was trying to remember was "Alchemy"
i guess noone told them that this name was already taken many years prior by the SCSI-transfer sound editor app from the 80s?
