What kind of jack is the speaker out?

The speaker output jack on my G4 533 AD is damaged enough that software complains that something it can't identify is plugged into it, and suggests unplugging and reseating the plug.

I wanted to try plugging in headphones with a standard 3.5 mm stereo plug, but it doesn't fit into the jack. It appears that the jack might be smaller the 3.5 mm?

So what is this jack really? Is it a 3.5 mm that's too badly mangled, or is it supposed to be smaller?

Here’s a pic of my 733 MHz Digital Audio and everymac also notes - “Headphone: None”.
The smaller port is for the Apple Pro speakers (minijack).



Never attempted to plug headphones into my 733 MHz DA
(although that icon does clearly look like headphones).

I’d closely inspect the inside of yours to see if someone has
possibly jammed something in there and broken it off in the process?

There are 4 possibilities here that I can think of. They are, in order of probability:

1. You're attempting to plug headphones into the Apple Pro speakers jack. It looks similar.
2. Your headphones are broken… test them on something else.
3. The contacts in the jack are corroded. Squirt some contact cleaner in there. If you don't have any, shame on you.
4. One of the solders where the jack is connected to the circuit board inside is cracked… usually because someone yanked too hard on
    a cord. That requires minor surgery.

Thanks. I think #1 answers one of my questions - the jack marked with a speaker (not headphones) symbol is NOT a 3.5 mm phone jack. Is it a smaller phone jack? Or something different and Apple-specific? In the picture FBz posted, it looks like something special.

The jack is visibly damaged - the plastic is cracked, and contacts are visible. I was hoping that inserting a plug (like headphones) would let me get sound out and avoid the error message I'm getting.

Thanks for the pictures! Now I know what that jack looked like before it got mangled.

And thanks for the link to the article. It's very informative, but unfortunately it doesn't look like good news: apparently even if I replaced the jack (yeah, good luck finding one of those) it won't work without genuine Mac Pro speakers.
