ADC to DVI cable?
« on: December 12, 2022, 09:14:16 AM »
My G4 533 AD has what I believe is its original video card, which has ADC and VGA connectors. I currently am using VGA with acceptable results, but I'd like to be able to use a DVI display.

Is there such a thing as a cable (or adapter) to convert the ADC output to DVI?

A quick web search found some cables meant to go the other way (so newer Macs with DVI output could drive an older display with ADC input).

Can you recommend a source? Hoping it's not Amazon or Ebay....

ADC > DVI adapters are unobtanium. The reason is because the ADC spec was unique to Apple and only used for a few years for those specific ADC monitors. The problem is that nobody has made male ADC plugs for a good 15 years now. You have 3 choices:

1. Set ebay and other searches for "ADC" and wait and wait and wait until you get lucky and find an old Belkin or Dr. Bott adapter
2. Buy a used Apple Studio or small Cinema Display.
3. Buy a broken Studio or Cinema Display for cheap, cut off the ADC plug and roll your own adapter. You can easily find an inline DVI jack and roll your own. You end up with the pic below.
* This does require decent soldering skills which you should have with a handle like yours…
