Yes it may be a MAX runtime. And as usual it happens to me when I find one of those :o :
Did anyone know what this is for?

Modularing (modular-ring) is a large collection of software to start from music creation to live performance. Build your own rack on Apple Macintosh with intuitive interface running like vintage modular system, full MIDI, with audio synthesizers, sampler, controllers and a lot of different sequencers… Modularing runs alone or in conjunction with ProTools and other existing recorders.

Zoom on Studio Racker the assistant tool to hide modules and show connections; read the quick announcement about the Samplesonic realtime samples & loops player with synth, pitch transposition and effects, the Seq Tracker for song composition and subsection live playing, and the Audio_Engine for background mix recording onto hard disk.
Version 3.0 demo is available for download including:
16 memories per module
+ new interface more professional and simple to use
+ coloured skins
+ exclusive groove with steps shifting system
+ the Net controller for live jam sessions over local network (ethernet)
+ mono and polyphonic synthesizers included
+ AIFF and WAV samples & loops player
+ MIDI, MIDISHARE, with MIDI pluggins for VST and OMS communication (OS9 only)
+ Direct Connect support for ProTools users (OS9 only)

As I said before, there is a demo out there, with 20 minutes funtionality and save disabled.

Metrophage tested it long time ago. I hope he finds those files.

Modularing is based on MidiShare, and is suposed to work with various Macs at the same time, letting various musicians "Jam" over local network. I guess is something like VST-link funtionality.

MidiShare is the target in 2015. We have to make it work with Cubase, Logic, etc. This Modularing tutorial show how to set MidiShare to use it with OMS and Protools. Same steps should be done to get Cubase/Logic/DP/Metro working with OMS and MidiShare.

I wait for a ChrisNova777 tutorial for using it with Ableton.

Not at all. As far as I can tell there isn't such a MIDI Share based applications, nor this Modularing.

MIDI Share is not a target at all. It is just "another MIDI magager, alonside with OMS, FreeMIDI, and Apple MIDI manager.
It is the less supported one by the Audio/MIDI apps.

And even all of those MIDI managers can work together. I strongly recomend against this.

Well, I'm not a Ableton live user, but connecting MIDI Share whith OMS (or FreeMIDI, or Apple MIDI Manager)  is really easy. All MIDI Share modules works as standalone apps ...

well... Any way, the target of this post is not about MIDI Share ...

This post is about Modularing. Modularing needs midishare. Anyway, I bumped both post >:(
It seems that OMS with MidiShare relies on some extension with  surname ms that allow midi send and return with other local Macs using MidiShare.

"msOMSDrive" is what you need to use OMS and MIDI Share together.

Chris, you and Mactron have French skills. Please someone elaborate a email to ask them for this legacy tool. In name of this legacy forum. At least the OS9 demo.

We should also thank them for having such good tutorials about Modularing and MidiShare still online on 2015!

I uploaded the installers to the root folder of my shares. Version 2 can apparently be registered to the full version with a serial (which I don't have), while Version 3 is demo only. They have a 20 minute timeout. They are not Max runtime patches, but full applications. Apparently when its registered one can put them in a virtual rack and pipe datectly between modules, sort of like a primitive version of Numerology. They are mostly MIDI generators and processors, with a few rudimentary audio modules.

To use them, it needs a compatible version of MidiShare, I tried 1.86 and it worked. When you install MidiShare, there is a folder of utilities which defaults to installing on the root of your hard drive (pic 1),

and a drivers folder which goes in the System (pic 2),

 - as well as a control panel, which tends to be the main way of using it (pic 3).

When MS starts it automatically runs the drivers as background applications. You need to make sure you've got the right ones there first. Some new world systems without serial ports might hang it up, so put "msSerial Driver" in the disabled folder if you aren't using it. I am testing Modularing now with an Emagic MT4 so I installed the "msOMSDriver" so I could use it. One MS is installed and the system restarted, open the MS control panel and you'll see a huge patch matrix. (pic 4)

The left side is inputs, the right side is outputs. Click on a port, such as the first block, and choose the inputs and outputs you want to associate with it. When you are running a program which uses MS, your ports should be available within the application. It was confusing to me at first, but made sense to me once I got used to it.

Despite MidiShare appearing to merely be "some quirky left-field MIDI manager", I have had good luck with it. Once it is set up, it runs well. And even offers a LAN driver for sending MIDI over ethernet for Macs without a MIDI interface.

that 3.0 demo issue can be helped with. (havent i yet?)

but dont expect much from that app. it is nice approach - and the first one of this kind.

but the modules are very basic - step sequencer, arp, controller generation, output - could later be replcaed with the equivalents of the pluggo 3 distribution.

but, while i dont use it myself, modularing still has a place in my heart. ;)

Wow, I always get amazed, it is an honor that you stopped in and said hello. I was at the Mac Expo running a vendor table in 2000. Were you there in 2000 ? or just 2002 ?

Sure.

Can you give us a generic serial for User:MacOS9Lives! ?

Or even better, can you make an updated version or release the code?

we have a working 3.x in the ftp since 5 years but you guys will not install midishare before 2032 anyway. it probably has not yet been discussed enough. the only thing i wonder about is that noone has yet opened up a topic about how to use modularing without it. :D

Hi all it's not possible to run modularing without midishare. I will look on my old mac how to give serial numbers.... don't remember the best way to get this (different protection modewas developed between OS9 and Mac OSX).  I will be pleased to hear what you do with modularing. Is there really an interest to play with this as today we could find a lot of system like this ? Thierry
