Horizontal lines in 1999 LCD Apple Studio Display

Has anyone ever done a teardown of one of these models? (15" 1998 LCD, 1999 Blueberry or Graphite)

I've got horizontal lines, and would like to inspect the connectors for any problems, but there is no iFixit guide for how to get inside one of these.

I managed to get the translucent shell off the back, but got no further.

Which is the resolution and which line is it?

Make a screenshot instead of a picture. Watch this picture on a different computer. Does it show that line?

Try a different resolution. Is that line in the same place?

It could be the video memory that is defective. Or the memory is overwritten by a bad program.

No, it's definitely just the display.
It's a 1024x768 display, and a screenshot shows up with no line.

Changing the resolution doesn't change the line either.

Using a different monitor is fine, so it's definitely hardware.

it is not nice, but the position of the prtoblem suggest that you can still use this monitor for some things.

In a second hand store you will find lots of LCD monitors with a resolution of 1280x1024 for 10 euro or less.

This looks very much like a fault in the LCD panel itself and there is not anything you can do about it if that's the case.  Typically LCD panel failures show blank vertical lines but horizontal lines aren't uncommon.  Since that is an older LCD, you might be able to pull the panel and clean the ribbon connectors that connect to various boards on the LCD panel itself.  Use something like Deoxit to clean the ribbon cables and try to get some cleaner into the connectors without getting it everywhere.

It's probably not worth trying to fix.  XGA flat panels can be found for dirt cheap.

I’m certainly going to try looking at the ribbon cables if I can get inside the display.

However I’m not sure what you’re talking about with “cheap” XGA replacement lcds. I couldn’t find any 1024x768 display at 15 inches that would be less than $150. Besides, I don’t have any clue whether those could be swapped with this one- do you know? No idea about how the cables would work at the back.

I can see that Apple used an LG lcd for this monitor- do I need to get that exact LG monitor as a replacement, or can you point me to another that would work?

Or can I just take any LCD from another old monitor and swap it in? Even if this blueberry display had 200:1 contrast, and a new replacement has 400:1?

for 150 euros you can buy monitors which are 3 times bigger - brandnew, that is.

I have 4 1280x1024 LCD monitors: a 17" LG with 1 bad pixel, a 19" LG without bad pixels, a Hyundai with 3 bad pixels, all 10 euro each, and an Acer with a blur in the center, 20 euro. So that’s 50 euro to have one that is OK. I don’t use them anymore.

That’s the problem with LCD monitors: would you ditch it for one bad pixel?

My laptop and notebook don’t have bad pixels. I use my G4 with a LaCie electron IV blue at 1920x1440. I would like to replace that with an LCD monitor with the same resolution and without bad pixels. Where will I find that?

Who cares if your 17" or 21" sells for $10? Of course they are cheap, they're easy to find.

I'm asking how to find a 15", 4:3, 1024x768 replacement XGA LCD. From my research, they are not cheap or easily available.

Yes, I understood, I am so sorry that mine sold before you could PM me, it was a 1998, same exact model, it sold same day since it was priced at $159, you are right, they are getting very expensive, many are selling at $490 or so; soon they will be at their original retail of $1099

Its value as a museum piece will diminish if you modify it.

It won't be modified, hopefully I can get an exact panel replacement if necessary, or at least clean the electrical contacts if that fixes the problem.

I’ve had a Zolid webcam with stripes. I don’t think this can be fixed without replacement.
