Maximum Gigabit Ethernet throughput

What’s the maximum Gigabit Ethernet throughput between a Mac that boots OS 9 and a Windows PC? How fast is it? How did you do it?

I would like to take as example, make a large file with Disk Copy and measure how fast you can transfer it.

I did it many many years ago … so I can't remember the result ^^

The easiest way would be to use a ftp client on MacOS 9 to send/get the file on the Windows hosting a FTP server (Interarchy, Fetch, etc).

Or using the Personnal Web Sharing to enable a Web server to download from Windows.

Or you can install Dave to use SMB to transfert your file but I think it will be better with FTP.

i am getting around 30mb/s using protocols like hotline or kdx (with encryption turned off) between a lenovo laptop and a quicksilver.

no difference between OS9 and OSX.

i am using a very bad cable.

If I use Fetch, then all my files are 'BINA'/'hDmp'. How do I get the right type and creator?

but that stuff i vaguely remember is that under a linux site of a friend we installed something which is similar to the email MIME types - and you could add custom information about filetypes there. then thje mac client would have been told by the server that *.txt was of type ogg/mpeg and this way all *.txt downloads ended up with a creator info "quicktime".

not sure if you want it to happen automatic or if you only need it once per week for a handful of files?

 - for things like .toast, programming languages, or synthesizer patches i use droplets to apply a t/c again.

 - for things like png i will attach a preview anway, so i use a drop app which add both at once, preview and creator "photoshop".

 - for midi and audio files i am quite happy that the creator is gone after a transfer.

If I download something then it should use PC exchange or Internet Config to set the right type and creator but it doesn’t.

Everything, including ".txt", is 'BINA'/'hDmp'.

i believe internet config really only does it for ftp-originated content when the ftp transfer was done with a webbrowser who supports this, which is why i dont even have it installed since 15+ years.

the settings in my file exchange controlpanel... do work.

to make sure that there is no influence by quicktime or stuff it deluxe i just tried .asp->dreamwaver and .cpp->codewarrior, which i put on my ftp server of my website and then downlaoded again with fetch - and those files work as they should.

however, if you prefer to have the BNDL´ed icons visible, changing the creator/type manually is not a bad idea anyway.
 
 
if it was not you i would now also add that you have to check "open unmapped files on local disks"

I disabled "Use Internet Config" in the Fetch preferences. Now the file mappings work. From then on enabling or disabling "Use Internet Config" doesn't make a difference. Whether you edit the file mappings using Internet Config or the Internet control panel doesn't make a difference.

yes other apps can grab the preferences from it, i think IE 5 did that, too.
