How to install an internal Jaz drive in a Powermac 9600/300
« on: December 14, 2021, 06:30:17 AM »
Hello,
I have a Powermac 9600/300 in perfect working order, with an internal zip drive.
I also have an internal iOmega 1 Gb jaz drive that I would like to install in the remaining free bay of the Mac, and connect it to the internal SCSI bus.
Is there a detailed procedure available somewhere ?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the links.
But actually I already have the Iomega installation manual; my question was more about how to install the drive in the Mac, for instance how to open/access the part where the free bay is located, without breaking anything...

press the green plastic button to open the side of the case
the plastic bezels that cover the drive bays are held in place by a plastic tab.
gently pry up the plastic tab far enough to release it from the frame.
at that point, gently swivel the bezel out and towards the other side of the frame, there are plastic hooks on the other side of the bezel that latch into the metal frame. once you have swiveled out the bezel far enough, they will come loose from the metal frame and can be easily removed.
there will be a metal cover over the drive slot, held in place by two screws. these screws also hold the drive tray in place.
remove the two screws, then the metal cover, and you can slide out the drive tray.
put the jaz drive into position, and screw it in from the underside of the metal tray.
slide the drive back into the machine, then connect the SCSI cable and power.
you may want to reconnect the machine and test the jaz drive, before you put everything back in place.

if you do not have a jaz-shaped metal cover for the jaz drive, it is ok to use the drive without one.

i highly recommend being as gentle as you possibly can when it comes to the swiveling/removing the bezel. the latching tabs on the right side of the bezels are the most commonly broken part on these machines, and no amount of glue will ever make it sit right in the frame again. And especially on machines of this age, the plastic is bound to be brittle.

Ahh, refinery’s in quick response mode today! ;)

(As per refinery.) Most 9600 internal fun begins with pressing that little torquoise / green release button on the top - but for even more intense 9600 investigations / hints & tips… refer to Syntho’s thread here:

FYI everything went fine. The jaz drive is up and running.
Connecting the SCSI bus was a bit tricky because there were already 2 HD and a zip, but finally I managed to do it.
Now I need a beige front panel for the jaz; any idea where this can be found ?

Thanks again.

CONGRATS on the install!

But no idea on the 9600 JAZ trim bezel. (Extremely rare... if not unobtainium.)

ZIP drive bezels are easier to find - but for the 9600 you might be better off fashioning one yourself, or from someone with a 3-D printer… OR cutting the original blank cover to accommodate the JAZ drive.

You're unlikely to find a jaz-specific bezel in the year 2021... However you may have more luck with searching for a general 3.5" compatible bezel.

Thank you both for your answers. I'll see what I can do.
My next step is to upgrade to MacOS 9.x and replace the existing video card with a Radeon 7000.
I haven't done that in ages, so I guess I will start by making a backup on jaz of the whole 8.6 system in case anything goes wrong...

Per refinery’s suggestion… here’s a possible source:
