Sound not working in old Mac system 7 games
« on: July 27, 2021, 04:38:34 PM »
My apologies if this is improper etiquette. I have an older year old post about asking for help troubleshooting old system 7 games. I think I goofed and replied to that post or aka necroing.
So here goes:

I have a Powerbook G3 400mhz Pismo completely decked out with the following;
128 gb msata ssd
1gb ram
VST Superdrive
VST Zip 100
VST 120 Superdrive *floppy*

and it works killer with os9.2.2

So I can play many if not all of the older games perfect whether it's Doom, Wolfenstein, Monopoly *the OG floppy disk one* etc. Applications such as Clarisworks 5 and that work fine.

However the SSI Goldbox AD&D games will NOT produce sound at all. However as eluded to in my older post the only reason I can think of is because those programs were native only to 68k Macs. I can get them to play fine but just no sound. I have this isolated down to JUST the SSI Goldbox AD&D games and nothing else at all.

Any clue as to what I have to do to get sound working on those old AD&D Mac games?

There's a couple of games that do not contain sound on later versions of Mac OS and/or PowerPC Macs. That said, I don't think there's anything you can do except writing a patch that fixes the non-working routines and replaces them with the Toolbox ones for OS9. Yeah, I know ...

Like I wrote you before, it's best to get a cheap LC Macintosh for playing the SSI and other System 7 games :-)

Thank you so much dear forum friend !!!

I do remember you now saying that, both having re read your post and you putting that idea into my head.

Iíll keep you posted !!

The older Laptop machines that were 68k are on my wishlist.

You know what I need to start up on here ???Ö..an online meetup gaming forum for these older Mac games. Makes me wonder which ones we could all enjoy together.

At least on the first of the five D&D games, I didn't get sound on a Mac IIci back in the early 90s either.

I contacted the developers -- you could actually talk to programmers on the phone back then -- and they admitted to the issue with an embarrassed laugh.

I never worked my way up to the other four games, so I don't know about those.
