Everyone remove your hat and offer a moment of silent appreciation to the indefatigable Cameron Kaiser.
As the one-man maintainer of both the last operable OS9 and the last maintained PPC OSX browsers, he has declared there is no light at the end of the tunnel and in fact, it looks like a dead end.
He offers a comprehensive explanation of it all here:
http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/2020/04/the-end-of-tenfourfox-and-what-ive.htmlTrue gentleman that he is, he parses his word carefully as he explains how and why it's simply no longer possible to maintain them (10-4 especially) and live any kind of life as well. Anyone who has followed the saga of TenFourFox could see that when he fell in love and got married in 2019, it was just a matter of time - only 24 hours in a day and all that. Combine that with the impossibility of improving Classilla any further and the impending dead-end of tying any more knots in the old FireFox code base that is 10-4 to keep it viable and it's clear the last chapter is about to end.
I, for one, have been continually amazed and appreciative at his tenacity and bordering-on-genius skills that have kept 10-4 going on PPC for TEN (count 'em) years past its sell-by date. Anyone with eyes could see however, that he was operating in a zone that was inevitably going to wear him down into a babbling overdosed, divorced codemonkey and he had to bail out to survive.
There will be those who raise a toast to him for doing what no one else could or would for so long, myself among them.
There will also be those who, while having little or no idea of what it really takes to do that job, will nonetheless diss him for quitting as though he owed them the right to use free software and keep their ancient hardware functioning efficiently and safely on the clusterfuck that is the modern Internet.
To them we should all raise an extended middle finger.
Thank you Cameron for all you gave us with so little thanks for so long.
