Unfortunately, projects usually drop support not for fun but because a framework/tool no longer support the OS or sometimes because it gets annoying to support the particular old needs of an OS. Best case scenario it is a question of dealing with idiosyncratic bugs and worst case scenario it is a quest for backporting frameworks before even touching the main project.
I had a similar reaction with MuseScore that stopped PPC with 1.2 and the 2.0 source was not very noob friendly (without being acquainted with how the last supported one builds + some luck as to why they stopped...
Yet, it is a seductive prospect to breathe life in an FOSS project on our PPC machines... Maybe there should be a crash course for that (to help spread the ways to get onboard such endeavour without facing a gigantic frustration wall :p).
