Powerbook, change optical drive to master
« on: May 22, 2020, 11:49:46 AM »
Hi,

I have a pismo G3 powerbook and its original DVD-ROM was having too many problems; i replaced it with a DVD burner I got from an old compaq PC and the new drive is in far better shape. It works mostly fine, with only one minor problem. The drive has ID 1 in place of ID 0, i.e. it is recognised as a slave instead of master.
I think apple drives have a custom firmware which set it to master, but all other drives rely on the BIOS for that setting.
I have changed the open-firmware alias for CD drive so now it boots from CD by pressing the C key; but still Apple Hardware test refuses to boot (the same disc boots with the original drive, when the drive feels like working for 15 minutes). I know it's a minor issue, but is there any way to change the cd drive setting ?

Thanks
