Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me..

Have a Power Mac 7600 with a XLR8 G3 upgrade card installed (MachCarrier) and a Sonnet IDE card installed to with a SD to IDE adaptor/bridge attached.

The "Hard Drive" is seen via Disk Tools on booting a OS9 install CD and can be formatted with no errors.

However on attempting to install I get an error after the "Updating disk driver" stage regarding the Installer being the wrong one for this system ?

This is on a number of OS 9.2.2 and 9.1 install images burnt to disk from here and else ware.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on ?

Update,

Managed to get 9.0.4 installed with zero errors.

Ran the updater to 9.1 and got an error regarding loading a "Help.img" close to the end of the process and now my installation is missing some things.

Tried to run the 9.1 updater again and got an error about the "wrong system" again..

Further update..

Managed to get 9.1 installed by the following "chain":

Install 9.0 from 9.04 CD.
Install 9.04 update from same CD as above.
Install 9.1 from the official 9.1 update CD and not from the stand alone updater.

To me it sounds like you are facing problems with your CDs. Either you got ones that are for specific models, or your media are corrupted? As you could update from 9.0.4 to 9.1 right now, we know that it works in general. If you have a well working "reatail" CD of 9.1 it should install directly at your 7600.

Anyways the 7600 is not supporting 9.2.2 officially . You'd need os9helper for installing 9.2.2. but unless you have an ATI card and need that specific latest ATI drivers for 9.2.2 or one of the very few programs that requests 9.2.2 there is no reason to not stay with 9.1!

Also do not forget to use the latest XL8 MachSpeed control. Btw. which MachCarrier version do you have?

Like I said I tried multiple Mac OS 9.x.x ISO's from here and elsewhere .. including retail 9.1. None worked with errors ether on boot of unsupported Mac or during install error of unsupported Mac. This error would not suggest issues reading/writing the media at all ?

I have Speed Control 2.8.2 and I have no idea what version of the MachCarrier I have..

we had a 7300 with xlr8 G4 back in the days and it ran 9.0.something (golden master CD bought from a shop) just fine.

I never had any issues with OS installation except I used a model specific CD.

So to see if it is a problem of the XLR8 you would need to install the original CPU card and see if the installation wents without problems in contrary to the G3 card, …

But I am also confused about your description as well to "Install 9.0 from 9.04 CD. Install 9.04 update from same CD as above." I never heard of a CD of 9.04 that allows to install 9.0 plus has the update to 9.0.4 at the CD, … did somebody else?

Is your installation complete now and well working? Is MachSpeed control also working well? I was asking of the version as there are early versions of MAChSpeeds (220MHz etc.) that are officially only supporting 9.0 not 9.1 see here for example: https://everymac.com/upgrade_cards/xlr8/mach_speed_g3/mach_speed_g3_220.html and this we could investigat how the situation was in the end with this cards.
