Any Architects / Arch Designers here using OS9?
« on: May 03, 2020, 11:53:54 PM »
Slim chance but worth asking! ;)

Trying to establish version of Architecture Design software used by others between '99 and '03. I was all AutoCAD and PC then...apart from ArchiCAD 6.5.

Oooooo... This is interesting. I'll have to keep an eye here. Maybe I'll even try some out sometime if you get some answers ;)

Thank you very much! Not all of it is mine, some are songs I've reposted on my profile, but all that say that they're by Europa or Europa (2nd Account) are mine! ;)

From real architectural offices I am only aware about ArchiCAD 6.5 in combination with Form-Z and Artlantis. ArchiCAD up to version 8 which was released in 2003, and used for a very long time in some offices.

But it depends on what you are planning. In the fields of 2d CAD there are some alternatives. A few of them are really usable: TurboCAD, DenebaCAD, CADintosh, or the early ones like MiniCAD, Professional CAD

If we are talking about 3d modelling, Mac OS 9 was the system to use:  Vectorworks, Maya, Blender, Sculpt, Amapi, Canvas, Poser,  Bryce, Carrara, or even Combustion, Cinema4D, Strata Studio or Infini-D

Thank you Mat,

I used ArchiCAD 6.5 and 7 on PC, I skipped 8-15 completely and started looking at 16 on my Mac Pro.

There was also Vectorworks for 2D (MiniCad successor) and PowerCADD, both of those I believe ran on OS9.

I would ideally like to run ArchiCAD 6.5 or 7 in OS9 or ArchiCAD 10 in OS X, but I cannot find any of these. Vectorworks is also nowhere to be found and I don't know of anybody who still has discs.

Don't forget FormZ for rendering! :)

I'm hopeful somebody on here may have something they can share.

Any idea how these would run on an iBook G3 Snow? It would be neat to go into Architecture class one day with a laptop running period-accurate CAD software ;)

MiniCAD, ArchiCAD 6, Cinema4D and most of the programs from around '99 would work quite well actually. My tutor ran ArchiCAD 5/6 on his 400Mhz G3 Pismo at really good speed. I was rocking a 200Mhz AMD-K6 at home! :)

Funny thing is, you would still be able to come up with designs, illustrations and drawings using the older software, it just won't be as polished...but build it you could. That's the nice thing about Architecture, you can do it with a pen / pencil on a napkin or piece of paper if you want to. :)

Also found BoA Software, they did some of the first parametric constraint design software. I remember they were a sponsor at Architosh.

I have VectorWorks 2012 that I once pulled of the torrents.
Do you still have the files? I'd love to load it onto my G4 mini!

I have ArchiCAD 6.5 and Form-Z around, but I have to see if it is not just in German, …

And yes I forgot the important 2d CAD program PowerCADD. It seems that version 6 from 2003 is the latest one for 9. VectorWorks of course is as well a serious 2d program!

Awesome! Thanks for the info! :D

I agree. Architecture is amazing in that way. It doesn't matter what you have access to, you can do anything you need to with the appropriate knowledge. :)
